The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. As you pass the baptismal font upon entering or leaving the church, and/or on the way to communion, you may dip your hand in the water and make the sign of the cross. This is an ancient body prayer to remember you are a baptized child of God. Simply touch your forehead to chest, then your left to right shoulder. GATHERING Stand. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Gathering Hymn Greeting OUR LITURGY IS MULTI-SENSORY and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. Used in many religions, the sweet smell of incense represents the rising of our prayers and the aroma of Christ spreading in procession throughout the world. We honor (cense) the primary symbols of the liturgy: the people, font, ambo (lectern), book of scriptures, cross, and table (altar). #864 Praise, My Soul, the God of Heaven During the greeting the presiding minister and assembly bow toward one another. We learn from Eastern cultures the deep significance of a bow as a sign of mutuality and the presence of Christ among us. 3 WORD This year Holy Trinity uses an option for the first reading from the Hebrew scriptures (often called the Old Testament). Rather than complement the themes in the gospel, this cycle reads through the narratives related to the Davidic covenant and wisdom literature in a semi-continuous way. As much as possible, sermons will draw out key themes from these passages. The book of Esther is a comic short story written probably in the second century BCE and set in the Persian Empire of three centuries earlier that gives biblical sanction for the non-mosaic annual festival of Purim. Purim, a popular Jewish festival still today that celebrates the deliverance of the Jews from a pogrom, is a day of joyous feasting and drinking, during which children are costumed as the good or evil characters of the story and people gift one another with food. There is no mention of God in the book of Esther, and both Jewish and Christian traditions have discussed the many religious deficiencies in the story. Christians have found most useful the first passage appointed for this Sunday, Esther 7:1-6, 9-10, in which Esther pleads for the life of her people. She has been seen as a metaphor for Christ, who pleads to God for us. First Reading Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Tone: Psalm 124 Setting: Mark Sheppherd The cantor sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor and assembly chant alternating verses. 1 If the LORD had not been on our side, let Isra- el now say; 2 if the LORD had not been on our side, when enemies rose up against us, 3 then would they have swallowed us up alive in their fierce anger toward us; 4 then would the waters have overwhelmed us and the torrent gone over us; 5 then would the raging waters have gone right over us. 4 6 Blessed be the LORD who has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth. 7 We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler; the snare is broken, and we have escaped. 8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the maker of heav- en and earth. Refrain Second Reading James 5:13-20 The passage from James impels us to examine our practice of prayer, which here is focused on communal healing, not on personal situations. The Elijah reference reflects early monotheistic beliefs, according to which any cosmic event, even weather, is produced directly by God. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Setting: Tillis Butler The acclamation is sung twice prior to the reading of the Gospel. Stand to welcome the gospel as Christ the Word of God as it is proclaimed among us in this place and time. Turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly, a sign of Christ among us. [4]

5 The extreme admonitions in this passage capture the metaphoric nature of Jesus preaching. Although later Christians saw this passage as about eternal punishment in hell, it is unlikely that Mark s community had any such medieval understanding of Gehenna. In our baptism, we do bear the name of Christ and have been salted with God s Spirit. The passage includes an admonition for Christians to cease competition with each other. The stark passage concludes with a blessing of Christ s peace. The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 7 Holy, Holy This ancient song is the musical climax of the liturgy and uses texts from Isaiah and Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. At the words blessed is he who comes, some make the sign of the cross as a connection to our baptism into Jesus death and resurrection. The responses during the Thanksgiving at the Table echo the presiding minister. we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. 8 The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Breaking of the Bread Please remain standing. ~ be seated ~ [8]

9 All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Communion Holy Trinity s radical welcome is also an invitation to baptism and a deeper connection to community. If you are not baptized, please speak to one of the pastors to learn more about the process of adult baptism. If God be for us, who can be against us? If you have been thinking about becoming a part of the music ministry at Holy Trinity in this way, this is the year to do it! Upcoming Commemorations October 4 + Francis of Assisi, renewer of the church, died 1226 Born into the family of a wealthy merchant, Francis gave up his inheritance to serve poor people. He formed the Order of Friars Minor (called Franciscans), who took on poverty and the task of preaching "using words if necessary." Francis had a spirit of gratitude for all of God's creation. October 4 + Theodor Fliedner, renewer of society, died 1864 Fliedner helped to bring about a revival of the ministry of deaconesses among Lutherans. He was influenced in this by Moravian deaconesses he had met. The motherhouse he founded in Kaiserswerth, Germany, inspired many around the world to take up this ministry. October 6 + William Tyndale, translator, martyr, died 1536 Tyndale was ordained a priest in England, and wished to translate the Bible into English. He was opposed in this by King Henry VIII, causing him to flee to Germany. He completed the New Testament in 1525, but before he could finish the Old Testament, he was tried for heresy and burned at the stake.
