Special children's bulletins are on a table at the back of the church. Please turn off all cell phones before the liturgy begins. * those who are able may stand Bold all This bulletin is available in large print ABOUT TODAY'S LITURGY: Pentecost is a day of promises fulfilled. The promised Spirit of God is poured out. The baptized have become "children of God" and " joint heirs with Christ." By the power of the Spirit we have seen the face of the Father in his only begotten Son and been saved by him. Bless the Lord, O my soul. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. PRELUDE Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott Dietrich Buxtehude ( Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord ) ( ) Text may be found in Hymn 395 Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. 3

*GATHERING HYMN Hail Thee, Festival Day All sing the refrain. Choir stanzas 1 & 2; all stanzas 3 & 4 *EASTER PROCLAMATION 4 Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed, Alleluia!

*REMEMBRANCE OF BAPTISM *CANTICLE OF PRAISE This is the Feast During the canticle the assembly will be sprinkled with water from the baptismal font. As you receive the droplets you make sign yourself with a cross in thanksgiving for the grace and mercy of our baptism into Jesus death and resurrection. 5

*GREETING The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *PRAYER OF THE DAY WORD FIRST READING: Genesis 11:1 9 The story of Babel is juxtaposed to the narrative of Pentecost because in the first story the diversity of human languages arises because of human arrogance and, in the second, all the languages of the Roman Empire proclaim the resurrection of Christ. The poignant theological tale finds contemporary resonance in some current theories about language development: that periodic migrations, which were the result of tribal ferment and scarcity of resources, led to linguistic variation. In both, language variation resulted from serious conflicts or problems. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM 104:24-34, 35b Setting: Mark Mummert The refrain is sung by the choir and repeated by the assembly. The choir sings the verses. Refrain: 6 How manifold are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the sea, great and wide, with its swarms too many to number, living things both small and great. There go the ships to and fro, and Leviathan, which you made for the sport of it. All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it to them; they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. Refrain

When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the LORD endure forever; O LORD, rejoice in all your works. You look at the earth and it trembles; you touch the mountains and they smoke. Refrain I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being. May these words of mine please God. I will rejoice in the LORD. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Hallelujah! Refrain SECOND READING: Acts 2:1-21 The narrative of Pentecost exemplifies Luke's expert storytelling ability. The reading includes hidden references to the Hebrew Bible, a citation from the prophets, a contemporary geography lesson, an account of miracles, and the folksy detail of the accusation of drunkenness. As we await the eschatological end of all things, we are now those who prophesy, see visions, and dream dreams. Although some Christians connect glossolalia with Pentecost, Luke describes these "tongues" as other languages with which to evangelize the whole world. Christians have sought to do just this, even reducing many oral languages to writing so as to be able to create a written text of the Bible. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Sung by the choir then repeated by the assembly. Aaron David Miller Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,* and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia, alleluia. 7

*GOSPEL: John 14:8 17 [25 27] The gospel of John is appointed for most of the primary festivals of the liturgical year because of John's high Christology and its centrality in the development of Christian doctrine. John says theologically the narrative of Pentecost: God sends the Spirit into the gathered community so that it can know the truth of Christ's resurrection. Christian theology subsumed John's description of the Advocate into its understanding of the Holy Spirit, and passages such as this led to the development of the doctrine of the Trinity. The Spirit is now the link between the believing community and God. The holy gospel according to John. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (sung as above) Alleluia, alleluia. SERMON Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. SILENCE 8

*HYMN OF THE DAY O Spirit All-Embracing 9

*WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS Introduction Apostles Creed With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Address and Questions People of God, do you promise to support and pray for these new members in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Welcome Let us welcome these sisters and brothers in Christ to this community of faith. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. 10

*PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Filled with the Spirit, let us pray for the Church, the world, and all in need. Brief silence Each petition will be read in a different language. O God of all peoples, we pray: + Norwegian: Bless those who serve as missionaries around the world, sharing the gospel of Christ. O God of all peoples, we pray: + Arabic: Guide the leaders of nations, that all people may work for peace and unity in the world. O God of all peoples, we pray: + German: Inspire us to be good stewards of your creation, that the face of the earth may be renewed. O God of all peoples, we pray: + Spanish: Unite us to work for the end to injustice, discrimination and hatred in our society. O God of all peoples, we pray: + Swahili: Surround the poor, the needy, and all those living with illness with your comfort and love. O God of all peoples, we pray: + French: Breathe on this assembly your renewing Spirit, that our faith may be known in our words and deeds. O God of all peoples, we pray: + Tagalog: We give you thanks for the saints of all nations, cultures, and tongues. Bring us, with them, to the fire of your love which embraces all people of the world. O God of all peoples, we pray: *PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. 11

MEAL GATHERING OF GIFTS AND SETTING OF TABLE Guests are invited to fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. ANTHEM If ye love me Thomas Tallis (c ) If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father and he shall give you another comforter, that he may bide with you forever, e vn the spirit of truth. (Text: John 14: 15-17a) *GREAT THANKSGIVING It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 12

During the prayer, the assembly sings these responses: As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. *THE LORD S PRAYER 13

*COMMUNION *LAMB OF GOD Be seated. All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. HYMN #396 Spirit of Gentleness SILENCE Stand. *PRAYER *BLESSING SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. 14

NEW MEMBERS Emily Studer & Collin Anderson have lived in Chicago for the past five years. Collin works as a service design manager for Trading Technologies and Emily is a psychiatric nurse practitioner at Thresholds social service agency. Collin is a lifelong Cubs fan, so Emily decided to be a White Sox fan to keep things interesting. They are in the process of planning their wedding on August 24, 2013 in Ohio, are very excited to be married, and are looking forward to their honeymoon in South Africa. Josh Evans was raised for over twenty years in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, in which he was baptized, confirmed, and educated (from pre-school through college!) when he first came out to himself, and ultimately his family, he realized that the church in which he grew up for which he was even on track for seminary could no longer be a safe place in embracing all of who he is. During his senior year at Concordia University River Forest, he found Urban Village Church, an infant church plant of the United Methodist Church, which he attended and served in for about two years. Feeling again a call to ministry in a new light, in February he visited LSTC, which brought him to Holy Trinity where he hopes to continue his discernment process for ministry in the ELCA. Peter Wong has been worshipping at Holy Trinity since July He very much likes the worship services and has decided to finally become a member. Peter lives in Lakeview and often takes trips around the world. Dinah Wayne grew up in Hyde Park with her mother, twin brother, three cats, and a turtle. She is interested in architecture, old buildings and all things German. Dinah found Holy Trinity somewhat by accident many years ago and is pleased to finally make her affiliation official. John & Abby Hottle grew up as high school sweethearts in a small town in Ohio, went on to get their bachelor s & master s degrees from Ball State University, and moved to Chicago for work. John is a business analyst at Deltak Innovation and Abby is a pediatric speech therapist working independently and at a developmental preschool. They enjoy watching the Cincinnati Bengals lose, the Chicago Blackhawks win, and travel as much as possible. Kelsey Jones, originally from Fort Wayne, has been living in Chicago for about five years. She is a CPA and in her free time enjoys playing soccer, watching college basketball (go Hoosiers!), and cooking. Holy Trinity has a vibrant congregation, beautiful church, and wonderful music which is why she decided to become a member! 18

Our worship is ancient and new We celebrate a liturgy based on ancient patterns and rituals that go back to the early centuries of Christianity. We gather each Sunday to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things We re For Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things We re Against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. 19
