1 Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church November 26, am & 11am Last Sunday of the Year On this final Sunday of the church year our gospel is Jesus great story of judgment. In the end, the faithful are those who served Christ by ministering to those who are poor, hungry, naked, sick, or estranged. In the first reading God is the shepherd who seeks the lost, weak, and injured and feeds them with justice. We gather this day to celebrate the reign of Christ and his victory over death, yet awaiting the consummation of all things yet to come. Acknowledging Christ as our merciful ruler, we go forth that his reign may be known in our loving words and deeds.

GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand, as you are able, and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the c, ross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in processions adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. [2]

Please see page 10 for the Canticle of Praise Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ Greeting Canticle of Praise This Is The Feast Prayer of the Day WORD The passage from Ezekiel was chosen to parallel Matthew s parable, since it also uses imagery of the king, judge, shepherd, good and bad flocks. Christians have seen in Ezekiel s promise of a shepherd like David a description of Jesus Christ. This very Sunday we are fed by this shepherd both words we can eat and bread and wine we share. 4 2 Let us come before God s presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to the LORD with psalms. 3 For you, LORD, are a great God, and a great ruler a- bove all gods. 4 In your hand are the caverns of the earth; the heights of the hills are also yours. 5 The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land. 6 Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD our maker. 7a For the LORD is our God, and we are the people of God s pasture and the sheep of God s hand. Refrain Second Reading Ephesians 1:15-23 This prayer and creed were chosen on this Sunday to laud the triune God the Father of glory, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the spirit of wisdom and revelation and to affirm faith in the continuing authority of the risen Christ as ruler over everything. We are the saints who receive Christ s spirit of wisdom; we have been enlightened see Christ s power at work; we are the body of Christ on earth. Be sure that a skilled reader proclaims this complex reading. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation Setting: Carl F. 5 Extraordinarily influential throughout the history of Christianity, this parable has often functioned as law, the command to care for the neighbor that is bolstered with the threat of hell. As gospel we see the parable as affirming the continuing presence of Christ in our midst. The risen Lord is not far away in some heaven, but is present around us every day. Gospel Matthew 25:31-46 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Meal Makers Needed Do you enjoy cooking? Do you love babies? Join our hospitality team at Holy Trinity. When a newborn baby is welcomed home (birth or adoption) we bring meals to the new family during the first two weeks as they adjust to a new rhythm of home life. It's easy and fun. Pastor Sevig sends a birth/adoption announcement to the group, then you sign up on a day that works for your schedule. You bring a meal to the family on your designated day and welcome the little one to the HTLC community by supporting their parents and sibling with a delicious meal. 12 Baptism Seminar November pm in the Nursery This seminar is offered prior to baptismal Sundays for expectant parents, parents with newborns, those planning a baptism in the coming months, or others who would like a refresher on the meaning and theology of baptism. All parents planning to have a newborn baptized are asked to attend this seminar at some point before the baptism of their firstborn child. Baptism isn't a one-time event--it's for life! Topics of the seminar will include baptismal theology, the role of parents and sponsors, and scheduling a baptism. RSVP required to Pastor Sevig (msevig@htchicago.org) prior to the seminar. Holden Evening Prayer ADVENT CONTEMPLATIVE WORSHIP Wednesday, December 6 + 7pm A quiet service of music and word featuring Marty Haugen s beloved Holden Evening Prayer Coffee Hospitality Host and 2018 Flower Sponsorship Signups Signup sheets for coffee hospitality hosts and flower sponsorships are in the narthex (entryway). Our annual book group Christmas dinner will be Monday, December 11 at 6:30 PM at Ignoble Wine Bar, 2417 N Clybourn. We'll be discussing the hilarious book Yes Please by Amy Poehler. If you like to read ahead, we'll be discussing I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai in January and A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles in February. Please join us, whether or not you have time to read the book! Commemorations for the Week November 30 + Andrew, Apostle The first of the disciples to be called by Jesus, Andrew quickly began to bring others to the Savior, including Simon Peter. The Bible also shows him leading some Greeks to meet Jesus, and he brought forward the boy with five loaves and two fish, with which Jesus fed thousands.

13 NOTES ON OUR NEW SERVICE TIMES This fall has marked a major change at HTLakeview with new service times at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. In fact, we used the tag line time for change in our communications. Both staff and congregation members name losses with the attendance better divided between the two services, busier Sunday mornings, and for some, less of an opportunity to socialize with others. At the same time, there are many gains to recognize. Within three hours on Sunday mornings, there are two choir rehearsals, Sunday School, Confirmation, Life Together, and various committee meetings. With Holy Trinity being largely a Sunday church, our new schedule maximizes this reality for busy urban lives. In addition, the two identical services allow many more people to participate as worship leaders. 28 new children and adults are serving this fall, for a total of 160 persons who volunteer as ushers, altar guild, sacristans, assisting ministers, crucifers, communion assistants, incense bearers, bread bakers, torch bearers, sacristans, readers, and choir members. Though the staff and council believe we should wait until next spring to fully evaluate the service time change, we welcome your comments and suggestions at any time. As we have seen thus far, total attendance on Sunday mornings has varied from 133 to 285. The smallest attendance at a single service was 58 at the 9:00 am service on Columbus Day weekend; the largest was 165 at the 11:00 am service on Reformation Sunday. We are pleasantly surprised by the popularity of the 9:00 am service on some Sundays. We appreciate your openness to this change and the opportunities for growth it brings to Holy Trinity. Since we now have space for newcomers, we hope you will help us get out the word and tell friends and colleagues about your church and invite them to join you for worship. You ll that several rows at the back of the church are roped off. We invite you to move forward as this provides a greater sense of community at services with smaller attendances. Finally, when attendance is large is it easy to think that you will not be missed. We hope you will make weekly worship a priority. We look forward to your regular presence in this time of rebuilding and growth. [13]
