PARISH BUSINESS Page 3 Fifth Sunday of Lent 3 rd Scrutiny I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live. This Gospel reading is not just the amazing story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. It is also the Lord s message to us about our own resurrection. In his conversation with Martha, he questions her to see if she believes that, everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Martha, of course, responds faithfully, stating her conviction that Jesus is the Son of God. Now, if we placed ourselves in Martha s shoes, how would we respond? Do we really believe that Jesus is the incarnate Son of God? Do we really believe that he offers us the gift of eternal life? Of course, this is what we profess every time we recite the creed. But today s scrutiny challenges us to go deeper than an external recitation. Do these statements of faith affect us? Do they help direct our choices and bring us comfort in times of trial? Jesus tells us that if we believe in him, we will never die. How does this astonishing promise change the way we live? The gift of eternal life should stand as a focal point of our entire Christian existence. We believe in a God who has power over death. We believe in a God who loved us enough to become man and suffer to save us. We believe in a God who calls us to give ourselves to him, just as he has given himself to us. The question is only how sincerely we will respond to this call. Jesus told his disciples, If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. Jesus is the light of the world. When we walk with him, we will not stumble, but will find our way to heaven Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal If you have not made your contribution to the 2016 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal, please consider doing so online at jolietdiocese.org, via mail, or by returning one of our Commitment/In-Pew Weekend envelopes at Mass. One pledge can make a difference, especially when combined with all of the other pledges made throughout the diocese. Please prayerfully consider providing your financial support to this Appeal Chosen by God s Grace. You can make a real difference! After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $121,214 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

5 FAITH FORMATION Faith Matt-ers By Matt Pozen Director of Parish Faith Formation Faithful Citizenship (March 13, 2016) Part I of the U.S. Bishops document, Faithful Citizenship, sets forth four major principles of the Catholic social tradition: 1) the dignity of the human person; 2) subsidiarity; 3) the common good; 4) and solidarity. Last week we finished #2 and began to discuss #3, the common good, which is the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfilment more fully and more easily. A balanced emphasis on both rights and responsibilities is crucial to promoting the common good. Another key aspect of the common good is the dignity of work and the rights of workers. As the Industrial Revolution took its toll on the working class throughout the 18 th and 19 th centuries, many people began to wonder whether the Church was simply aligned with the traditional power of kings and aristocracy, and with the new power of entrepreneurs and the bourgeoisie. After The Communist Manifesto of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in 1848, many workers began to turn away from the Church and toward the ideas of socialism and its organization of workers unions. It was Pope Leo XIII s 1891 encyclical, Rerum Novarum ( On the Condition of the Working Class ), which strongly turned the Church s heart toward the plight of the working class and those on the margins of society. The bishops and faithful of the world quickly took up the pope s call and began to advocate in their respective nations on behalf of the working class. In the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, Catholics in the United States were a predominantly immigrant and working class community, so the vision of Pope Leo had a profound effect upon the American Church in particular, and American society in general. Thanks to the waves of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Poland, Italy, and other parts of Europe, by 1900 the Catholic Church became the largest church in America, accounting for 22% of the population. The vast majority of these Catholics were members of the working class, and the concern of the Church for their plight became crucial. In paragraph 50 of Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. bishops articulate a key principle in regard to labor: the economy must serve people, not the other way around. Both employers and employees have rights and responsibilities: Employers contribute to the common good through the services or products they provide and by creating jobs that uphold the dignity and rights of workers to productive work, to decent and just wages, to adequate benefits and security in their old age, to the choice of whether to organize and join unions, to the opportunity for legal status for immigrant workers, to private property, and to economic initiative. Workers also have responsibilities to provide a fair day s work for a fair day s pay, to treat employers and co-workers with respect, and to carry out their work in ways that contribute to the common good. Workers, employers, and unions should not only advance their own interests, but also work together to advance economic justice and the well-being of all. The 2008 collapse of the financial sector seems to give clear witness to what can happen when corporate greed and short-term profit blind people to the long-term goal of economic justice and the well-being of all. Then, taxpayer money is used to bail out the financial sector, and as federal and state budget deficits pile up, guess which programs get cut in order to rein in debt? The very social service programs needed by those who lost their jobs as a result of the financial collapse. Of course, this is only one aspect of our current economic situation, and we can t blame everything on corporate greed. Taxpayers are also demanding that public workers unions not only advance their own interests, but also work together to advance economic justice and the well-being of all. As part of the common good, we have a duty to care for God s creation, or as Pope Francis refers to it in Laudato Si', our common home. We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of God s creation because every creature is the object of the Father's tenderness, who gives it its place in the world (Laudato Si', no. 77). Care for creation is a duty of our faith and a sign of our concern for all people, especially the poor, who both everyday experience and scientific research show suffer the gravest effects of all attacks on the environment. Pope Francis underscores that environmental degradation can often force the poor to leave their homes, with great uncertainty for their future and that of their children" (no. 25). The threats to the environment are many. Pope Francis, consistent with both St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, has recently lifted up pollution, climate change, lack of access to clean water, and the loss of biodiversity as particular challenges. He speaks of an ecological debt owed by wealthier nations to developing nations and he laments the weakness of many responses to the ecological challenges rooted in complacency and a cheerful recklessness. In the face of this, we should aim for a new lifestyle, one that strives to live simply to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, and one that brings healthy pressure to bear on those who wield political, economic and social power. We have a moral obligation to protect the planet on which we live - to respect God's creation and to ensure a safe and hospitable environment for all human beings. Page 5

7 Be Still God is the friend of silence. His language is silence. Be still and know that I am God. He requires us to be silent to discover Him. In the silence of the heart, He speaks to us. Jesus spent 40 days in silence before beginning His public life. He often retired alone; spent the night on the mountain in silence and prayer. He who spoke with authority spent His early life in silence. The Word of God is speechless today in the Eucharist. His silence is the highest and truest praise of the Father. It is the adoration of God. We need silence to be alone with God, to speak to Him, to ponder His words deep in our hearts. We need to be alone with God in silence to be renewed and transformed. Silence gives us a new outlook on life. In silence, we are filled with the energy of God, Himself. This helps us do all things with joy. Silence is at the root of our union with God and with one another. The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is silence. (From Divine Readings with Mother Teresa) The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some holy hours need partners. March 15, 2016 As we celebrate this Jubilee Year of Mercy, come experience the mercy of God during an hour of prayer at Immaculate Conception Church, Pilgrimage Church of Eastern Du- Page County, held on the third Tuesday of every month of our jubilee year. In the month of March, we will be praying particularly for the Forgiveness of Sins. Obtaining a Plenary Indulgence during the Year of Mercy. A plenary indulgence frees a person from all of the temporal punishment due to sins and may be gained only once on any one day. Indulgences are only applicable to oneself and to the dead. How can one obtain a plenary indulgence during the Year of Mercy? One obtains this indulgence by: having the intention of acquiring the indulgence, going to confession (before or after the visit), receiving Holy Communion, making a profession of faith, praying for the Holy Father and for the intentions that he bears in his heart for the good of the Church and of the entire world, while doing any of the following: The faithful by visiting one of the Diocesan Pilgrimage churches. The sick and people who are elderly and alone by receiving Holy Communion or attending Holy Mass and community prayer (even through the various means of communication). The faithful by personally performing one or more of the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. The faithful by remembering the deceased at Holy Mass and praying that they be freed from every remnant of fault and thus be embraced by God in the blessedness of life eternal.
