Kulick, & Laura JCL Nalevanko From Our Pastor: The Reverend Monsignor Larry J. Kulick, JCL, V.G. GOD S PROMISE TO ALL PEOPLE Today Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and that they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God s fidelity to them, all people shall become God s children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God s promise to Israel. Epiphany January 7, 2018 Like many of the most ancient Christian feasts, Epiphany was first celebrated in the East, where it has been held from the beginning almost universally on January 6. Today, among both Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, the feast is known as Theophany - the revelation of God to man. Epiphany originally celebrated four different events, in the following order of importance: the Baptism of Christ; Christ s first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; the Nativity of Christ; and the visitation of the Wise Men or Magi. Each of these is a revelation of God to humanity: At Christ s Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God the Father is heard, declaring that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ s divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visitation of the Magi, Christ s divinity is revealed to the Gentiles - the other nations of the earth. For information, call Millie Krinock, January 2018 National Slavery & Human Trafficking Awareness Month There are millions of slaves on the earth today, including millions of children who will never see the inside of a classroom. Plan to learn something this month about Modern Day Slavery. Visit: Sistersagainsttrafficking.org Living Out Christmas in the New Year How do we live out the message of Christmas in the New Year, rather than pack it away with the ornaments? Each year the Octave Day of Christmas falls on the first day of the New Year, on which we also celebrate the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. Her open heart and courageous "yes" to God show us how to live year-round-with hearts open to the Lord, following where He leads. We are called to place our trust in Him, to enter compassionately into the suffering of others, and to love one another as Christ loves us. Like Our Blessed Mother welcomed Jesus, we are called to cherish and protect the gift of human life, at every stage and in every circumstance. One way to live out the message of Christmas and follow Our Lady's example is to join 9 Days for Life, a digital pilgrimage of prayer and charitable action. The U.S. Catholic bishops invite you to join thousands of Catholics nationwide from Thursday, January 18 - Friday, January 26, Join today at Epiphany House Blessing On the Feast of Epiphany it is customary to bless homes. The following blessing may be celebrated with your family in your home. Materials: A piece of chalk and a small container of holy water. Gather with family, friends, and neighbors at the front door. Leader: In the (+) name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Let us pray: May Christ bless this house! All: Amen We sign this doorway with four crosses and the numerals of the new year. (20 + C + M + B + 17) Leader: A Reading from the Second Letter of Peter. We look forward to the new heavens and the new earth God has promised, a dwelling place of righteousness. The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God! Each room of the house is sprinkled with holy water. Living Room: You are present where two or three are gathered. Kitchen: Give us this day our daily bread. Dining room: May we be seated at the heavenly banquet, Bedrooms: Protect us, stay with us through the night. Bathroom: You cleanse us always from sin. All return to the front door to pray together. Leader: Let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father The leader sprinkles all present with holy water and concludes: Bless this household through all days to come, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, forever and ever. All: Amen!
