2 Page Two Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 8, 2010 FROM THE PASTOR TWO MARTYRS OF AUSCHWITZ In 1973,I travelled to Poland for the first time. I have a good memory and can easily recount the highs and lows of that trip. One destination on our itinerary disturbed me so much that I rarely speak of it and have never written about it until now. Auschwitz (Oswiecim) is a memorial to victims of the worst injustice. How does one begin to describe the barbarism and inhumanity of such a place? Horrific words like genocide, extermination, liquidation cannot approach the diabolical and criminal atrocities committed at Auschwitz. How can one forget piles of discarded spectacles, dentures, and human hair intended to be woven into cloth? How can one forget soap made from human remains? And how can one forget the euphemism used to describe the hell of the Nazi death camps? THE FINAL SOLUTION!" This week the Church celebrates the feasts of two martyrs of Auschwitz- - Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) and Saint Maximilian Kolbe. Each of them can inspire and challenge us. In 1996, in collaboration with artist Robert Lentz, Sister Joan Chittister, wrote a memorable biography of saints, A Passion for Life: Fragments of the Face of God. Among the saints presented was St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Sister Joan has great insights about the Jewish intellectual who would become a Catholic, a Carmelite nun and a martyr. Edith Stein was a Jew in Hilter s Germany, a brilliant woman in a man s world, a Catholic nun from the Jewish synagogue She was out of step everywhere. She didn t look like a candidate for Christianity, but she was; she didn t look like the martyr type, but she was; she didn t look like stuff of which Feminists are made, but she was. Looks can be and are deceiving. Great saints have an inner "openness" to something... someone greater. Edith Stein and Maximilian Kolbe had personal encounters with the Holy. As a youth, Maximilian Kolbe had a "defining vision in which the Blessed Virgin offered him two crowns-- one white and the other red. They symbolized calls to chastity and to martyrdom. Maximilian chose both. His gifts as a missionary of the media" made him a worldwide herald of the Good News and an enthusiastic promoter of Marian devotion. He was, in his own time, a success. That made him a "celebrity" and a threat to National Socialism. He would be imprisoned. Eventually he would offer his life in exchange for the life of Franciszek Gajowniczek, a family man and fellow inmate at Auschwitz. Maximilian Kolbe's heroism grew out of an identification with the Passion of Christ. For fourteen days, he endured torture in the starvation bunker. He strengthened and comforted his fellow victims with prayers and hymns. In the end, he and two remaining prisoners would be given a fatal injection. Edith Stein too had a "defining vision"- -one drawn from the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila but her path to Catholicism and the religious life was not undertaken in isolation. She had been impressed with the return to Church of an admired' professor, Max Scheler. Thus it happened that I went beyond the confines of the rationalism in which I had been reared without realizing it and found myself suddenly in the world of faith. Edith Stein s faith led her to the Cloister. Her sister,

3 Page Three Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 8, 2010 Rosa, would later join her as a Catholic and a Carmelite. As the "final solution became a more immediate threat, Edith and Rosa found refuge in a Dutch convent. When the Bishops of Holland denounced Nazi anti-semitism, it was no longer safe for Jews in Holland. While Switzerland offered Edith a safe haven, Rosa had to remain behind. Edith refused to desert her sister no matter what the danger. Rosa and Edith were arrested with fifteen hundred other Jewish converts to Christianity. They were sent to Auschwitz. A week later both Edith and Rosa died, approximately one year after Maximilian Kolbe. These two canonized Saints of Auschwitz are an eloquent sign of contradiction to our world. Even in the midst of a hell devised by evil men, great holiness can exist. Nor is that holiness confined only to canonized Catholic saints. It is the legacy of millions who suffered and died during the Holocaust. May their memory be honored even if their names may be unknown to us! - Fr. Luczak Financial Update Last week s collection fell short of our budget target by $489. On a year to date basis we are now $1,009 behind our budget for collections. We encourage everyone who can to increase their weekly contribution by $1.00 to help us meet our budget. We wish to express our thanks to all parishioners who have given of their time, talent and treasure to support the Parish. We have a critical need for the following areas. Kitchen The kitchen sells comfort food for our patrons. We offer Sloppy Joes, Tuna Salad, Grilled Cheese and Hot Dogs along with fresh Pop Corn and candy bars. The Kitchen is open from 5:30 to approximately 7:30. Preparation begins between 4:00 and 4:30. We need two volunteers to man the kitchen each week. The goal is to have 8 to 12 individuals who would rotate responsibility. Bingo Games The doors for Bingo open at 5:30. Our goal is to have four teams each consisting of five to six workers. The teams are made up of a Leader who oversees operations; a Caller who runs each game; three Floor Walkers who sell Bingo cards and verify winning cards; and a Casher. We are extremely short of help in this area, particularly on the third week of each month. We need 10 to 12 volunteers to man this operation.

4 Page Four Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 8, 2010 SPIRITUAL LIFE OUR LADY OF KNOCK MASS A Procession and Mass in honor of Our Lady of Knock will be held on Friday, August 20 th, at 7:00 p.m. Every is very welcome to come, pray, and hear the story of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist at the Church at Knock, County Mayo, Ireland in All are welcome! Refreshments will be served in the Holy Family Room following the Mass. Helping hands and smiling faces would be most appreciated for set up that Friday morning after the 8 a.m. Mass; to serve, and or to help clean up that night. Breads and cakes would also be gratefully accepted. If you would like to help in one of these ways, please call the Religious Education Office, 847/ , and let us know. Thank you! RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process of prayer, reflection, study and discussion for individuals who have never been baptized; who are baptized Christians but who seek to learn more about the Catholic Church; or who are baptized Catholics but have not received First Communion and Confirmation. An information night regarding the RCIA process will be held in the Religious Education Office on Thursday, September 2 nd, at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome, including parishioners who would just like to know about the process or who are seeking information for a family member, friend or neighbor. Please call Dee Stanton or Joyce Mills at 847/ with inquiries or questions. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE From September 22 through October 31 Parishes, organizations, and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Chicago will participate in 40 Days For Life, a national campaign of prayer, fasting, peaceful vigil and community outreach. During the 40 days individuals pray and fast for an end to abortion and continue to call upon local, state, and national leaders to protect all human life. Parishes and individuals across Chicago maintain a prayerful presence 24 hours a day every day of the 40 days in front of an abortion facility to change hearts and save lives by creating a strong Culture of Life through the Gospel of Life. In support of this 40 day effort, St. Isaac Jogues and St. John Brebeuf Parishes are working together to provide prayer coverage on the Feast of the North American Martyrs, Tuesday, October 19, from Midnight to Midnight. Sign-up will begin in mid-september, but please consider now how you will support this holy work on behalf of life! RSVP to the RE Office, 847/ by Monday, August 23 rd. ****************************************************************************** HUMAN CONCERNS Backpack Safety: The Facts With school bells ringing in the not-too-distant future, families are shopping the aisles of Target, Wal-Mart, Staples, etc. to find needed items on back-to-school lists. Among those likely to be purchased are backpacks. Before getting yours, read on. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, chiropractor survey responses, and web-sites such as kidshealth.org, backpacks can present health issues for kids. Each year thousands of emergency room visits by kids & teens are the result of improper wearing of backpacks. In 1997, the Journal Ergonomics reported Rucksack Palsy is a common symptom of repeated backpack use from pressure on nerves in the shoulder that cause numbness in hands. ( Although waist belts may keep backpacks in place, in some cases, belts can cause forced excessive distribution across a growing pelvis leading to possible pelvic abnormalities. (Congress of Chiropractic State Associations & Professor Mary Hickey Northeastern University, 2002 in Airpacks System, Backpack Safety Facts ) Chiropractic visits related to backpack use are for back, neck or shoulder pain. The most common diagnoses are subluxation, sprains & strains, and bruising. A majority of students carry more than the recommended guidelines of 10-15% of their body weight. (Simmons University April, 2001 in Airpacks System, Backpack Safety Facts) In fact, improperly worn weighty packs can lead to backaches & unnatural spine compression and, when slung over one shoulder, contribute to back pain, neck & shoulder strain. In many cases, backpacks in themselves don t lead to problems. Factors that need to be considered are proper fit, load to be carried, good design & correct wear. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) August 9 "Come," Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa's hand, "Let us go for our people!" These were Edith Stein's last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops' condemnation of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith's search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Avila, which she read in one sitting, then declared, "That is the Truth!" Baptized on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus' initiation into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus' Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
