2 Page Two Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 17, 2011 THE CHALLENGE OF HOLINESS I never cease to be pleasantly surprised and duly impressed by the range and depth of the preaching and writing of our present holy father, Pope Benedict XVl. Along with the second volume of Jesus of Nazareth, the pope's prayerful reflection on the Jesus we meet in the Gospels, I recently ordered Holiness Is Always In Season. Another book about the saints? Yes, but a good deal more than the usual chronology and pious reportage! Pope Benedict tells us : holiness never goes out of fashion on the contrary, with the passage of time it shines out even more brightly expressing man s perennial effort to reach God The daunting challenge of Jesus: "Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect" need not frighten us away from following in Him. The cross has to be as real for us as the "crown" of victory. The halo is not the glory of our own achievements but the shared light of Christ. It is given to the army of martyrs, confessors, and virgins, as well as all those called from every walk of life- - from the high and the mighty to the lowly and powerless, from the graceful and well-favored to the awkward and physically repulsive. Truly, there is a saint to inspire each of us... a saint to give/us all hope. Holiness Is Always In Season uses the Church Calendar and offers us encouragement. The life of each saint as one commentator put it; "shows how the life of each saint has something unique to teach us about virtue, faith, courage and the love of Christ." "The story of Mary of Magdala reminds us all of a fundamental truth: a disciple of Christ is one who, in the experience of human weakness, has the humility to ask for help, has been healed by Him, and has set out following closely after Him, becoming a witness of the power of His merciful love that is stronger than sin and death." Of St. Bridget, a royal lady who spent most of her life as a pilgrim to Italy and the Holy Land, he says: "With her witness she speaks of openness to different peoples and civilizations. Let us ask her to help humanity today to create large spaces for peace. May she obtain from the Lord in particular peace in the Holy Land, for which she felt such deep affection and veneration Pope Benedict offers a lovely image of the saints in his remarks on All Saints Day: When we consider the spectacle of sainthood: the world appears to us as a 'Garden where the Spirit of God has given life with admirable imagination to a multitude of men and women saints, of each age and social condition, of every language, people and culture. Everyone is different from the other, each unique in his or her own personality and spiritual charism. All of them however, were impressed with the seal of Jesus Now and again, I recommend books for the library of the parishioner - - books that are clear and have an inspiring message. I do recommend Holiness Is Always In Season. It is published by Ignatius Press and may be found at good book stores and, most easily, on line. My library of Pope Benedict s works will continue to grow. We have much to learn from our Chief Shepherd. He is a great teacher! Fr. Todd Williamson We human beings are essentially creatures of habit. As infants, we struggle to learn how to stand up and take our first steps. Eventually, however, through repeated efforts, we are able to accomplish the task without conscious thought. Our minds are designed in such a way as to not have to repeat the learning process all over again. That s the essence of habit. As a result, however, we don t take very kindly to change!

4 Page Four Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 17, 2011 Adapting to change is always a challenge. As we prepare to adapt to the changes in the prayers we use at Mass, we are indeed faced with a challenge. At the same time, however, change also brings us opportunity. The new translation of the 3 rd Edition of the Roman Missal presents us with, not only a challenge, but also an opportunity to delve deeper into the Mystery of the Eucharist and to bring all Catholics to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Eucharist. One of the banners of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy has been the phrase, from paragraph 14: full, active and conscious participation of all the faithful. This was one of the aims of the renewal of the Liturgy sought by the Second Vatican Council. Over the last 40 plus years, we have done very well to encourage and enable all of our people to do just that. People do participate actively. People do participate fully. Now, with the English translation of the 3 rd Edition of the Roman Missal, we have the opportunity to focus on conscious participation! New words can make us take notice. New words can make us pay attention in new ways. New words can cause us to listen at a deeper level. One of the inherent dangers of ritual is that, if we are not careful, we can let it become routine. We know these words so well and we know the pattern of the Mass so well that, quite frankly, sometimes the words can go in one ear and out the other! This is an opportunity to let the words of the Mass take us to that deeper understanding, to that deeper level of praying the Mass. The new Roman Missal changes more than just the words in the Mass In a very real way, if all we do is make this about new words, then we are in danger of missing this unique opportunity for a profound catechesis on the Eucharist. If our approach is simply, This is what we don t say anymore; and this is what we do say, then we are at risk of doing a real dis-service to the people to whom we minister. With the English translation of the 3 rd Edition of the Roman Missal this can be a time when all Catholics can renew for themselves the sense that the Mass is the very source and summit the very heart of our Christian lives. This can be a time when catechetical leaders can lead their people to participate in the celebration of the Church s liturgy in the very best way possible. It can be a time to once again recall our fundamental belief in the centrality of the Eucharist to our lives of faith! The renewal of the liturgical life of the Church, called for by the Second Vatican Council, has been a process in which we ve been engaged for four decades. This is one moment in that process a very key moment. As noted, there will be challenges in these articles we have made suggestions on how these challenges might be approached. Gospel - Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teaching them of the reign of God (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]).

VINCENT DEPAUL MINISTRY AND OTHER SIJ VOLUNTEERS NOURISH THE HUNGRY AT CATHOLIC CHARITIES DINNER On Tuesday night, June 14th, 15 volunteers, including members from your St. Vincent de Paul Ministry and other St. Isaac Jogues parish members, participated in serving dinner to 84 hungry people at Catholic Charities in Des Plaines. The staff at Catholic Charities remarked that it was a very large turnout. Our group manned the serving stations, filling plates with delicious, healthy food, and served 16 tables of diners. Those who participated felt that it was a heartwarming experience that gave them a chance to do some real good. The St. Vincent de Paul Ministry at St. Isaac Jogues is grateful for the much needed response to our call for help from our parish population. We would not have been able to handle the crowd were it not for your kind assistance. Due to these difficult economic times, we are seeing more people in crisis situations requesting our assistance than ever before. We hope to continue our tradition of volunteering at Catholic Charities dinners for the needy twice a year--in January and in the summer--but we need your help! We will be posting the dates for our next Catholic Charities events in the bulletin and hope that you will look into your hearts and volunteer to participate in this worthy cause. It will only take a couple of hours of your time. If you are interested in learning more about these types of volunteer opportunities, please contact the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry at St. Isaac Jogues Parish by calling the main parish office number. A SVDPM member will call you back and explain the many ways that the Ministry helps the needy in our local community. RE NEWS EDUCATION *Registration for the RE Program continues! Returning families need to fill out the appropriate form for (these were mailed). If you are enrolling another child into the program, you will need to fill out a student form and provide a copy of the new child s baptismal certificate (if not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish). A partial tuition payment would be appreciated, if possible. Please remember that in order to pay the parishioner tuition rate you must be registered in the parish and using your Sunday envelopes and/or giving time in at least one of our parish ministries. If finances are a difficulty, please call us. No one is denied participation in the program because of an inability to pay! New families fill out appropriate family and student forms, provide a copy of each child s baptismal certificate (if not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish) and provide a letter or report card from the parish or Catholic

RE Classes meet on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Grs. 1-8 (Confirmation Year II) meet on Monday evenings, 6: p.m. Students must participate in religious education classes (in an RE Program or Catholic school) for at least two consecutive years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families are strongly encouraged to send their children to religious education every year to assist them in their faith development and formation. Families who have children with special needs or older children who have not yet celebrated First Reconciliation, First Communion, etc., are encouraged to talk with us to see what options are available for your children s participation. Hidden Treasures: Songs I Might Never Have Heard If It Weren t for Buddy will again feature many of Chicago s top cabaret acts including Audrey Morris, Joel Barry, Anne Burnell, Mark Burnell, Steve Heliotes, Ernie Lane, Bob Moreen Jeanne Scherkenbach, Bob Solone and Scott Urban. There will also be a special guest performance by Pat Gries, Mrs. Buddy Charles. Tickets are $20 and available at the doors which open at 2 p.m. All proceeds will go to our parish! It s a great afternoon of music, song, memories and laughter! Come and bring your family and friends as we support our parish and celebrate a character extraordinaire! TEEN GATHERING The Teen (13-17 year olds) dinner and planning meeting, which was cancelled last Monday due to the power outage, will now be this Monday, July 18 th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
