2 Page Two Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 16, 2008 THE ENTOMBMENT OF OUR LORD: A Devotional Conclusion to the Liturgy of the Passion When I was six or seven years old, my great-uncle, Felix, took me to Church on Good Friday. St. Hedwig Church on Hoyne Avenue was very unlike my own parish which was Irish American. It had been the church of my great-grandparents a venerable Polish landmark in an ethnic enclave known as Bucktown. For me, St. Hedwig s Italian Renaissance interior echoed and re-echoed with unfamiliar music, Latin prayers, and a seemingly endless and emotional Polish sermon. I was astonished to see people who, during the veneration of the cross, approached on their knees. It has been fifty-seven years, but I shall never forget the multitudes, young and old, creeping to the cross. It was both strange and beautiful to behold! Later, Uncle Felix took me by the hand and led me to the ornate Grob Panski or Tomb of the Lord. There, a life size figure of Christ lay in state for mourners. At that time, I thought it strange that Jesus should have a wake. Still, my impression was vivid. The reality of Jesus burial brought home the fact of His death in a way nothing else could for a six year old. For many years, I did not experience anything remotely like Good Friday at St. Hedwig s. I presumed it was a Polish custom, but would discover that the rite known as the Depositio ( Deposition ) can be traced back to Jerusalem and much of medieval Europe. Liturgical historian, James Monti, explains why some have never witnessed the Good Friday Holy Saturday custom. Following the Liturgy of the Passion there are no further liturgical services in the Roman Rite on Good Friday. Yet the desire to commemorate the concluding scenes of the Passion has resulted in a variety of devotional exercises focusing on the death and burial of our Savior. These devotions build upon the themes of the Liturgy of the Passion, and help the faithful to continue their reflections upon the events of the solemn day. In the Western Church, the earliest clear evidence of such customs goes back to the tenth century. Often, the cross was central to the rite or a shroud. But it was St. Ulrich, the tenth century Bishop of Augsburg, who began the custom of burying the Holy Eucharist rather than the cross. The Sacrament was deposited in a symbolic sepulcher to be brought forth from the tomb on Easter Sunday. Through its long and varied evolution, the depositio began to include a sculpted figure of the dead Lord or Epitaphion (a shroud with and embroidered figure of Christ in death). The depositio or Tomb of the Lord became a popular custom in Italy, Spain, France, the Philippines, and especially Austria, Catholic Germany, and Poland. In German and Polish versions of the Tomb, tableaux include flowers, candles, and other figures keeping vigil. Almost invariably, the monstrance with a host consecrated on Holy Thursday is covered by a thin veil and is displayed above or near the tomb. In the Polish tradition, the same monstrance is carried in procession at a dawn Mass on Easter Sunday. With this historical background and St. Isaac Jogues ethnic diversity, it seems fitting to share, at least in part, the tradition of displaying a sepulcher from Good Friday night until Holy Saturday afternoon. For some Poles, Germans, Italians, and Filipinos it is a familiar expression of piety. For others, it is traditional and yet new! As a multicultural

3 Page Three Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 16, 2008 American parish, the way we share tradition, customs, and beliefs reflects Christ s universal inclusive love. Let me conclude with a quote from Maria von Trapp, recalling Good Fridays of her youth! Like the crèche around Christmas time, so the Holy Sepulcher on Good Friday would be an object of pride for every parish I still remember the atmosphere of holy awe stealing over my little hearth when as a child I would make the rounds of churches. There in the Holy Sepulcher He would rest now, watched by His faithful until Holy Saturday afternoon. - Fr. Luczak Stewardship..Sunday Collections Weekly (This Year) 3/9/08 $9, (Last Year) 3/6/07 $13, The Lord God has given me a well trained tongue, that I may know to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. says Isaiah in today s first reading. The gifts God has given us are likewise given for the good of others. How am I using my gifts? SPIRITUAL LIFE FOR OUR PRAYER AND REFLECTION From a sermon by St. Andrew of Crete, bishop Let us go together to meet Christ on the Mount of Olives. Today he returns from Bethany and proceeds of his own free will toward his holy and blessed passion, to consummate the mystery of our salvation. He who came down from heaven to raise us from the depths of sin, to raise us with himself, we are told in Scripture, above every sovereignty, authority and power, and every other name that can be named, now comes of his own free will to make his journey to Jerusalem. He comes without pomp or ostentation. As the psalmist says: He will not dispute or raise his voice to make it heard in the streets. He will be meek and humble, and he will make his entry in simplicity. Let us run to accompany him as he hastens toward his passion, and imitate those who met him then, not by covering his path with garments, olive branches or palms, but by doing all we can to prostrate ourselves before him by being humble and by trying to live as he would wish. Then we shall be able to receive the Word at his coming, and God, whom no limits can contain, will be within us. In his humility Christ entered the dark regions of our fallen world and he is glad that he became so humble for our sake, glad that he came and lived among us and shared in our nature in order to raise us up again to himself. And even though we are told that he has now ascended above the highest heavens the proof, surely, of his power and godhead his love for man will never rest until he has raised our earthbound nature from glory to glory, and made it one with his own in heaven. So let us spread before his feet, not garments or soulless olive branches, which delight the eye for a few hours and then wither, but ourselves, clothed in his grace, or rather, clothed completely in him. We who have been baptized into Christ must ourselves be the garments that we spread before him. Now that the crimson stains of our sins have been washed away in the saving waters of baptism and we have become white as pure wool, let us present the conqueror of death, not with mere branches of palms, but with the real rewards of his victory. Let our souls take the place of the welcoming branches as we join today in the children s holy song: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the king of Israel.

THE DIVINE MERCY St. Faustina s Diary contains at least fourteen passages in which Our Lord is quoted as requesting that a Feast of Mercy be officially established in the Church. He declared: This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of My tender mercies (420) It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the First Sunday after Easter. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fountain of My mercy (699). The Feast of Divine Mercy will be celebrated at St. Isaac Jogues Parish on March 30 beginning with the Noon Mass. 6 Page Six Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 16, 2008 HUMAN CONCERNS Flu Season Update Strengthening Your Immune System Last week, I presented the latest on this year s flu season as well as tips on protecting yourself & stemming the tide. Today, I ll feature one way you can boost your immune system. Our immune system is a compilation of cells & organs that help us fight infection & stave off illness, etc. It s our first line defense. To assure its optimal functioning, we have to care for it. According to Advocate Congregational Health Partnerships March 2008 Congregational Quick Hit article, Strengthen Your Immune System, Diet is the basis of our building blocks It lists as well foods that are packed with nutrients that will help your body fight infection naturally. Because of the potential health benefits they provide, it s recommended that you include them in your diet. Berries (red and blue) Have antioxidant compounds called flavinoids and the bonus of being scrumptious! Dark chocolate Could there be anything sweeter than seeing this food on this list?!! Chocolate is loaded with antioxidants, magnesium, and potassium. Garlic Not as much fun as chocolate but contains a sulfur compound that boosts the production of white blood cells. Green tea Vitamin C and antioxidant flavinoids work hard for us, and sipping tea can give us an international air! Salmon Vitamins A and D, selenium, omega-3 fatty acids to help our bodies ward off disease. Sweet potatoes Vitamin C and beta carotene make this a nutritional hero! Great mashed, baked or oven fried. The article concludes with other ways to bolster the immune system, one that I didn t cite last week a positive outlook. This, coupled with a health lifestyle plenty of rest, regular exercise, reduced stress & proper diet may not be a 100% guarantee against falling victim to this year s flu bug or developing an autoimmune disease. These should, though, enhance the overall quality of your life. Not a bad return on your health investment! I hope you have a good week. Pat Kellen, RN, Parish Nurse Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? As a society, we have a choice. We can address the inequalities that lead us down the path to disease now or we can pay to repair bodies later. This and similar questions will be featured in a four-hour series that sounds the alarm about the extent of our socio-economic and racial disparities in health. Although most PBS stations across the US will televise this series at 10PM on March 27, April, 3, 10 & 17, 2008, check your newspaper or program guides for local broadcast dates and times. As consumers and people of faith, healthcare disparity affects us all. We need to be part of the solution. Please watch this important series! 8 Page Eight Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 16, 2008 ST. ISAAC JOGUES WOMEN'S CLUB NOMINATION FOR WOMAN OF THE YEAR March 2008 Our selection of Woman of the Year is a Fran Zimmerman. For 53 years Fran has been a parishioner of St Isaac Jogues and a member of the Women's Club. Fran has held the position of president for our Club for six one-year terms, over a span of 22 years. This past year's term has given Fran the distinct honor of being our Club's President for more years than any other women. She accepted the nomination in 2006, while recovering from an extensive surgery. She did not want to see the club disband, so after many attempts to find a woman to accept the position, Fran accepted the nomination. Fran is a mother of 7 children, grandmother of 17 and great-grandmother of 1. She loves to be with her grandchildren, and as they grow, loves to attend their activities. But she still finds the time to have a great interest in her spiritual family. She is ready to hold meetings in her home for anything that involves the parish and the club. She is always ready to drive someone needing a lift in any kind of weather. Our club's large fundraiser for this year is a Spring Luncheon & Fashion show, which is scheduled for April 12. Fran contacted a number of members and when she could not find someone to come forward to chair this event, Fran agreed to co-chair the event. Fran was concerned that our parish did not have a church sign informing people passing by on Golf Road and that we were missing a chance to evangelize. The club's annual donation from last year was used to purchase and install the sign this year. Fran sincerely believes in our Women's Club and also that the Women's Club is a big part of our Parish. Her love for the club is seen in her hard work, enthusiasm and overall interest in the continuation of the club. We are happy to have Fran Zimmerman as our Woman of the Year. 9 Page Nine Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 16, 2008 DID YOU KNOW THAT CARDINAL GEORGE HAS 3 CONSULTATIVE BODIES TO HELP HIM IN DECISION MAKING PROCESSES? Church Law calls for consultative bodies in every diocese to assist the bishop/archbishop in decision-making processes. A Presbyteral Council composed of priests and deacons, a Financial Council and an Archdiocesan Pastoral Council made up of delegates from every parish, religious order priests, sisters, brothers, and lay organizations. Every parish is mandated by Church Law to have a Finance Council and by diocesan law to have a Parish Pastoral Council. The Archdiocese of Chicago has 6 Vicariates, a territory that comprises about 384 parishes in Cook and Lake Counties. Each Vicariate has a bishop called an episcopal vicar who pastors a number parishes and reports to the archbishop. The vicariates are further divided into smaller territories called deaneries. Each deanery has a dean who assists the local bishop along with ties to each of the parishes. Communication links help to pass on information, pastoral concerns and support between the parishes and the deans and vicars. OUR PARISH IS IN VICARIATE II AND WE ARE IN DEANERY E Bishop Francis J. Kane is our Episcopal Vicar and Fr. Ron Kalas is our dean. Each of the 11 parishes in our deanery has 2 delegates that are a part of a team that makes up our Deanery Council. Our parishes are: Our Lady of the Brook and St. Norbert in Northbrook. St. Catherine Laboure and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview. Our Lady of Ransom. St. John Brebeuf and St. Isaac Jogues in Niles. St. Martha in Morton Grove. St. Paul of the Cross and Mary, Seat of Wisdom in Park Ridge. Our Lady of Hope in Rosemont completes the deanery. WHO ARE OUR PARISH DELEGATES? The following parishioners are members of the Deanery Council: Alex Gairabetoff and Louella Preston The council holds its meetings at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. a central location in our vicariate. They begin at 7:30 p.m. and end no later than 9 p.m. The 2 Deanery Delegates to the APC are: Mary Fran Dolan of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Glenview and Mel Lund-Michel of Mary, Seat of Wisdom Parish in Park Ridge.

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
