2 Page 2 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 14, 2015 John 17 Fellowship Looking Ahead The John 17 Fellowship has been invited to the Buddy Charles Concert (July 19) and the Parish Picnic (August 2). An Ecumenical Advent Retreat is also being planned for December 5. Pray and Strive for Christian Unity. -Fr. Luczak That they all may be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you -John 17:21 For two years a group from Messiah Lutheran Church in Park Ridge and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenview have met with the St. Isaac Jogues Ecumenical Committee. Dialogue, shared prayer and pot luck fellowship have borne fruit. A mutual awareness of what Lutherans and Catholics have in common and a respect for what still divides them has produced a Mission Statement for John 17: -To engage in dialogue between our Catholic and Lutheran neighbors -To help us become aware of similarities in living the Christian life and -To strive to understand and respect our traditions as we work together to spread Christ s message 2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Lutheran and Catholic groups recognize that it is an opportunity for reconciliation and healing. The John 17 Fellowship, in months to come, will continue to share a dialogue of life, action, prayerful sharing, and theological reflection. A book from Augsburg Fortress and Liturgical Press, One Hope: Re-Membering the Body of Christ, will help John 17 members to reflect on and discuss the causes of separation, reasons for hope and prospects for unity. GOD S WORD TODAY In today s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus proclaims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disciples, as insignificant as they may have felt, would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God s kingdom cannot be predicted. II (Gr. 8 & older) continues and we look forward to welcoming your family back or for a first time! Kindergarten RE is on Sundays, a.m., and will begin after Labor Day. All other grades meet on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. and begin at the end of August. Register now please so we have enough catechists, assistants, and materials ready to make it a good year of faith development for your children and your families! For new families there is a family form, a form for each child and a permission regarding medical attention and photos to sign. We also need a copy of each child s baptismal certificate if they were not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Families with children who are older and have not celebrated First Reconciliation or First Communion or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call Dolores Stanton, 847/ , to discuss how we can help them in their education and formation in the faith and preparation for sacraments. All are welcome! If you have a financial concern, please talk to us about it. No one is denied religious education due to financial difficulties. MUSIC OF THE ROARING 20 S is the theme of this year s parish benefit concert in memory of legendary piano man and parishioner Buddy Charles (Gries). Plan now to come to the Holy Family Room with family and friends on Sunday, July 19 th, beginning at 3 p.m. when some of Chicago s top cabaret performers wow us with great music and singing, with a few stories on top of that! Tickets are $20 per person and will be available in the Rectory or RE Office in early July, in the Holy Family Room the weekend of July 11-12, and at the doors when they open at 2 p.m. the day of the show. Many friends of Buddy are returning for this 7 th annual tribute with all proceeds coming to St. Isaac Jogues Parish. We are deeply grateful for the continued generosity of the performers: Audrey Morris, Bob Solone, Anne Burnell, Mark Burnell, Joel Barry, Paul Marinaro, Jeanne Scherkenbach, Steve Heliotes, and Scott Urban. If you donate your gi card, you will be suppor ng the work we do in helping the needy of our community. According to research, over $100 billion in gi cards were purchased in the US in a one year period; yet over 20% of those gi cards will go unredeemed or unused. We can use your donated gi cards to buy warm socks or gloves for a homeless person. We can purchase diapers for a needy family or formula for an infant. We can provide hygiene products like soap and shampoo to people who might not otherwise be able to afford these basic essen als. We can buy bed sheets and pillows for a family who has just moved into our area. 7 Page 7 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 14, 2015 FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM The Fortnight for Freedom is a 14-day period (June 21-July 4) of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom initiated by the Catholic Bishops of the United States. This fortnight stems from their statement titled Our First, Most Cherished Liberty issued in 2012 which outlined concerns over threats to religious freedom both at home and abroad. Our parish will support the fortnight with a variety of activities including daily prayer, Holy Hour, First Friday devotions, patriotic rosary, discussion of articles on religious freedom, movies, etc. We encourage you to participate in one or more events! Daily Mass: Prayer for Religious Liberty June 22: See below for Archdiocesan activity. June 24: Movie -- The Scarlet and the Black, 7 p.m., HFR. Based on the true story of an Irish priest in the Vatican who organizes an underground network in Rom to hide the Jews and others from the Nazis during World War II, with Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer. June 26: Coffee and Discussion on religious liberty immediately following the 8 a.m. Mass, HFR June 29: Coffee and Discussion at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on articles Continuing the Search for Religious Liberty: The Contribution of Dignitatis Humanae (regarding the 50 th Anniversary of Vatican II s Declaration on Religious Liberty) and Religious Liberty and the Practice of Charity. Both articles will be available at the doors of the church next weekend to read in preparation. July 1: Movie Jerzy Popieluszko: Messenger of the Truth, 7 p.m., HFR. Documentary narrated by Martin Sheen about Polish martyr and 20 th century hero, Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, chaplain of the Solidarity movement in Poland, who was murdered in 1984 at the age of 37 by the Communists for speaking the truth about human dignity and rights. His strong faith, love and courage mobilizes the nation to stand united against the Communist regime in Poland. July 2: Fortnight for Freedom Holy Hour, 7 p.m., church. The 202 currently retired Archdiocesan Priests represent 25% of all priests serving the Archdiocese. Of that 202, 100 are over age 80, 15 are over age 90, 1 is 104! Normal retirement age is 70. We are grateful for 54 retired priests who still live in a rectory and assist the parish on a regular basis and another 130 who celebrate Sunday Mass weekly; perform marriages and baptisms; and visit the sick. Without them, many parishes would not be able to offer Masses and Sacraments. Retired Priests receive no outside funding and need our help. Please share your gratitude and be as generous as possible in the second collection for our Retired Priests. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A wedding celebrated in the Eastern Church has a form that was fixed a thousand years ago. In the West, our story is more complicated by constant change and variation. As the world s structures tottered in the ninth century, bishops and priests stepped into the void left by collapsing civil structures. For the first time, marriage was referred to as a sacrament, and wedding ceremonies were to be in public (assuring the free consent of the bride) after an investigation of the couple by a priest. The custom of the blessing of the bridal room diminished, and was finally forbidden in 1012 by the Council of Rouen, although it continued for centuries. In the diocese of Perigueux in France, a ritual from 1827 had the parish priest clad in surplice and stole sprinkling the bridal couple as they stood modestly in their pajamas by the wedding bed.
