2 Page Two Christ the King November 22, 2009 from the Pastor CHRIST THE KING presented to athletes and poets to the jeweled diadems of kings and emperors, crowns signify the power of office and the relationship it entails. When the British monarch is crowned, the peers of the realm - barons, earls, viscounts, marquesses, and dukes-- also place their coronets on their heads. This not only demonstrates their allegiance to the sovereign, but their acceptance of his or her authority over the Commonwealth. The Crown of St. Edward-- worn only once in the lifetime of a reigning monarch - - is the most important symbol of the elevated position of the new king or queen. Dim Reflections and Real Glory On June 2, 1953, Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of England. It was an event that was shared by millions of people. Not only the privileged with reserved places in Westminster Abbey, but, through the new medium of television, a worldwide audience could witness the spectacle. I was part of that audience. Even in grainy black and white, the televised ceremony and music were awesome. The coronation took months of preparation and represented a legacy of 1,000 years. Even though the ritual had certainly evolved since the accession of King Edgar in 973, the overall effect was almost magical-- a revelation of things both ancient and sacred. As a nine year old, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth began a life-long fascination with monarchy and its rich symbolism. In the 1970s, I traveled to England twice. One high point was visiting the Tower of London. Seeing the Crown Jewels on display recalled the coronation years before. The British Regalia itself can tell us much about what is expected of a king or queen. Crowns have always been symbols of triumph, high honor and distinction. From the laurels The Imperial Crown of State, studded with diamonds, is worn at the end of the coronation and for all important state occasions, like the opening of Parliament. Other important parts of the Regalia are: - The Ampulla and Spoon-- Vessels used for the anointing of a British sovereign - The Ring-- sign of the covenant pledged by a sovereign to God and his/her people; it is called England's Wedding Ring. - Golden Spurs - signifying honor and chivalry - The Orb - Symbolizing universal dominion, it is surmounted with a cross. - Bracelets (Armills) symbolizing the Armor of Righteousness - Sceptres Rod with a Cross - for power and justice

3 Page Three Christ the King November 22, 2009 Rod with a Dove for duty and mercy - Swords State Sword - majesty and authority (offered on the altar) "Curtana" - blunted sword of mercy Sword of Justice- spiritual and temporal power The British Regalia is most impressive because Britain has a long history and a continuing succession to the throne. I have also seen the Imperial Russian Regalia in the Kremlin's Armory Museum and the Regalia of the Holy Roman and Austrian Emperors in the Schatzkammer of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. As stunning as these experiences of the symbols of power are in a museum they lead us only to the past. Even Britain's regal symbols mean less because Britain is, in fact, a crowned democracy. When Pope Pius XI instituted the great Solemnity of Christ the King in 1925, three of Europe's major monarchies-- Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary-- had been swept away by the tide of war and revolution. The pope's gesture was not a nostalgic salute to monarchy nor a reactionary desire to restore an ancient form of government. Pope Pius XI was acknowledging Jesus Christ as the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. The Pope also wanted Christ to be the model for all governments, new and old. Christ alone, has a Divine Right to govern all creation. He alone is the perfect defender of justice. He alone, armed with supreme virtue and might, can be victorious over evil. Christ, and only Christ, can guarantee for humankind the signal benefits of true liberty, calm order, of harmony and peace. The symbolism of Kingship has its roots not only in antiquity but in legends like Camelot. More importantly, the Bible describes God Himself as King and God's Kingdom as a promise to be fulfilled. When we honor Christ as King, the symbolism of imperfect, human monarchy remains a relevant, but dim, reflection of what He is and what His Kingdom will be. The last Sundays of the Church Year remind us of the end of the world but they also lead us to the threshold of a glorious new beginning in Christ! - Fr. Luczak Father all-powerful, God of love, you have raised our Lord Jesus Christ from death to life, resplendent in.glory as King of creation. Open our hearts, free all the world to rejoice in His peace to glory in His justice, to live in His love Bring all people together in Jesus Christ your Son, whose kingdom is with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. - Roman Missal

CATHOLICS COME HOME The Archdiocese of Chicago, with the Dioceses of Rockford and Joliet, are undertaking the Catholics Come Home initiative beginning with a media campaign from mid-december to mid-january. In preparation for the invitation, welcome and accompaniment phases of the initiative, we are seeking members of the parish to help staff a Welcome Table which will be set up in the Holy Family Room each weekend. If you are willing to give a few minutes after Mass to greet and assist those who might come to the table, please sign up in the Holy Family Room beginning next weekend or call the RE Office at 847/ We are also looking for people to be sponsors for people who would like to become reacquainted with the Catholic Church and/or our parish community. ADVENT WREATH LIGHTERS Advent begins next weekend! Families and individuals are invited to participate in the lighting of the Advent Wreath the four weeks of the season. It will be lit at the beginning of each Mass (except the 5 p.m. Mass the First Sunday of Advent, when it will be blessed and lit after the Prayer of the Faithful). Please sign up in the Holy Family Room today or contact the RE Office 847/ Arrive about ten minutes before Mass to find places to sit and to go to the sacristy to look over the simple instructions. Basically you walk down the main aisle with a lit candle before Mass begins, light the week s appropriate candle and return to your seat. After Mass you return the candle you used to light the wreath to the sacristy so it is ready for use at the next Mass. READINGS FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Jeremiah 33:14-16 Psalm 25:4-5, 8-10, 14 I Thessalonians 3:12-4:2 Luke 21:25-28, ABOUT NEXT WEEK S READINGS JEREMIAH: The prophet Jeremiah lived at a difficult time in Jewish history. Jerusalem, the beloved capital city, had been destroyed, and most of the people taken captive to far-off Babylon, which is in present-day Iraq. Despite this gloomy setting, Jeremiah expresses the conviction that the Lord will raise up a new leader from the line of David to restore and rebuild their native land. I THESSALONIANS: The date was some 30 years after Christ s death and resurrection. The place was a city in northeast Greece called Thessalonica, where Christians were being persecuted. Paul, who had brought the Gospel there, heard positive reports about them and sent a letter of encouragement. ************************************************************************* EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS *RE Families are invited to Mass with all the classes on Monday, at 6:50 p.m. in church. ( About American Diabetes Month, American Diabetes Month, Daily Herald, Wed. Nov 4, pg. 5) Of those adults living with it, 9.1 million are women & 3 million of them don t even know

7 Page Seven Christ the King November 22, 2009 it. ( Diabetes, Women s Health Take Time to Care FDA Office of Women s Health pamphlet ) In terms of children, the ADA (American Diabetes Association) indicates that each year nearly 15,000 youngsters are diagnosed with type 1 & nearly 186,300 have it. ( Children & Diabetes, American Diabetes Month, pg. 2) Suffice it to say, diabetes is a disease that warrants attention. How do you know if you re at risk or that you have it? Read on! Lifestyle, ethnicity & your gene pool put you at increased risk. Being overweight & getting little or no exercise are risk factors. If you are African American, Native American, Hispanic, Asian American or Pacific Islander, you have more chance of developing it. ( Diabetes pamphlet) According to the Nov. 4, 2009 Daily Herald supplement, in the US, the incidence of diabetes is especially high among the Latino community. Among the Hispanic group, rates are 8.2 percent for Cubans, 11.9 for Mexican Americans & 12.6 for Puerto Ricans. (pg. 8) For other ethnic groups, the rates are 6.6 percent for whites, 7.5 for Asians & 11.8 for Blacks. (pg. 8) Having a parent, grandparent or sibling with diabetes increases one s chances. Women who had gestational diabetes during a pregnancy or delivered a child that weighed 9 or more pounds at birth have a greater risk as well. Other condition -related risks are having high blood pressure &/ or abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Be aware that as you age your risk for diabetes increases, too. Warning signs of diabetes include going to the bathroom a lot, increased thirst, increased hunger, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, cuts/ bruises that are slow to heal, chronic tiredness, tingling/ numbness in the hands or feet. However, most people with diabetes do not notice any signs. ( Diabetes pamphlet) Whether you re at risk for developing diabetes or not, watch your weight, get plenty of exercise, control your blood pressure & cholesterol/ triglyceride levels & when you have your annual checkup, get tested for it. Next week, I ll talk about diet. May each of you enjoy a most happy & blessed Thanksgiving! Pat Kellen, Parish Nurse, Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues The Nurse is in December 6. 9 Page Nine Christ the King November 22, 2009 UPDATE FROM THE UNIED STATES CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS On November 7, the U. S. House of Representatives passed major health care reform that reaffirms the essential, longstanding and widely supported policy against using federal funds for elective abortion coverage. It is critical that the Senate adopt the Houseapproved Stupak Amendment language on this issue. This Amendment ensures that Americans are not forced to pay for the destruction of unborn children as part of needed health care reform. The Senate must address other essential moral priorities: protecting conscience rights; making health coverage more affordable and accessible for those in need; and ensuring that immigrants do not lose or will not be denied health care coverage needed for the good of their families and the health of society. ACTION: The Senate schedule is uncertain. Please act today! Contact Senate and House Members through , phone, or fax letters. To send a prewritten, instant to Congress go to or call the U.S. Captiol switchboard at: , or call your Members local offices. Full contact information can be found on Members web sites at & MESSAGE SENATE: Please adopt the Houseapproved Stupak Amendment that upholds longstanding policies against abortion funding, and please protect conscience rights in health care reform. Health care must be made more affordable and accessible to those in need, and immigrants must not lose or be denied health care coverage. MESSAGE HOUSE: I am pleased that the Housepassed health care reform bill maintains the longstanding policy against federal funding of abortion. Please work to ensure that this essential provision is included in any final bill sent to the President. For more information on proposed legislation and the bishops position on authentic health care reform, visit: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an unconscious claim on their hearts. We've already seen how on Saint Martin's Day, November 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of "Saint Martin's Wine," the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin's Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. If the Pilgrims had known of the Martinmas connection, they might never have celebrated at all! Rev. James Field, Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
