2 ST. TERESA of AVILA STUDENT CENTER PAGE Laporte Ave. Valparaiso, IN Fr. Chris Corner Dear friends in the Lord, This weekend we are celebrating the feast day of our patroness, St. Teresa of Avila. I don t know how much you know of her, but I would like to share with you a little bit about her history. Teresa was born in Spain and she led a fairly ordinary life. She was known to be somewhat of a trouble maker but at the age of 16, she went to the convent. At first she hated it, but eventually it began to grow on her because she fell in love with God. While she was in the convent, she learned about the practice of mental prayer. She tried as hard as she could to keep Jesus Christ present within her. She tried to imagine herself into various Scripture passages in order to hear Christ speak to her. She prayed this way for about 18 years without feeling she was getting any results, but something must have been working because lots of people sought her out to teach them to pray this way. Teresa fell ill with malaria and underwent seizures. When she awoke from it all, she found herself paralyzed for three years and was never completely well. These three years were difficult for her and she was tempted not to pray at all. What she realized though, is that turning away from prayer is like a baby turning away from its mother. She came to realize that prayer is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with Him who we know loves us. Some of her most popular writings include The Life of St. Teresa (An Autobiography), The Way of Perfection, and The Interior Castle. Students got acquainted with their families and spent time together sharing some snacks! Stewardship Commission God s Hands in Action St. Teresa s Tithing As individuals we are called to be good and generous stewards with God s manifold gifts. Tithing is the means whereby we have the opportunity to give thanks to God; with that in mind, the community of St. Teresa of Avila tithes $450 weekly. This week our tithing will be donated to the Vocations Ministry in the Diocese of Gary. God s Hands in Action St. Teresa s is a generous community and as such, the Stewardship Commission has formed a God s Hands in Action: Weekly Tithing Committee. To be more intentional in our giving, this group will select organizations that meet the following criteria: Follow the teaching of the Catholic Church Have a local/community connection About five years ago we changed our tithing amount to $450 weekly and we will continue to donate that amount to each organization. If there is an organization that is close to your heart and that meets the guidelines or you are interested in serving on the committee, please contact the committee at saintt.godshands@gmail.com.

Name of person for whom the Mass is intended. 1. Name of person who is offering the Mass. 2. The stipend is $10 per Mass. 3. If you have a specific date and Mass time please include that as well as a second choice. 4. Send your request to the office. This information can be: Put in the collection basket in an envelope labeled MASS INTENTIONS We will be breaking open the topic of Scripture and the Bible this Monday evening, in the Antioch Room, at 7pm, as the Inquiry phase of RCIA, the time of discerning God's call, continues. Ann Ruggaber will be with us to shepherd the discussion. If you feel that God may be calling you to the Catholic Church, there is still time to enter the process. Saint Augustine First Friday Memorial Association Consider this memorial to honor your deceased loved ones or list a special intention for the Mass held on the first Friday of each month. Social Justice Unwanted Shoes. Once again our Social Justice Commission is asking the St. T's Community to continues collecting unwanted shoes, no matter what condition!!! Collection runs until October 31 Tubs are located in the Link Area This has become a Sojourner Truth House fundraiser that cost nothing, yet raises funds to help homeless and at-risk mothers with children. This a simple act we can all do that makes a great impact on people in need.
