2 Page Two Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2009 "LENT GALLERY" VEILED AND UNVEILED Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, and nothing hidden that will not become known. - Matthew 10,26 Before the Liturgical reforms of Vatican II, the last two weeks of Lent were called Passiontide. During Passiontide, it was customary to veil the cross, statues and icons in purple. They would remain covered until the Gloria at the Easter Vigil. A practical explanation for this custom is that, as the Sacred Triduum approached, the faithful were to avoid distractions of any kind. Veiling images was visual fasting. Historically, the veiling of images during Passiontide can be traced back to the seventeenth century. It was an adaptation of a much older custom. There is evidence of veiling in the Old Testament. Two dramatic examples come to mind-- the veil before the Holy of Holies and the veil worn by Moses after leaving the Lord's presence (Exodus 34, 29-35). In both instances, veils shielded the glory of God from the gaze of sinners. There is evidence for veils in the sanctuary in both Eastern and Western Churches going back to the sixth century. In the East, the sanctuary veil evolved into the Iconostasis. In the West, Medieval architecture divided the chancel and the nave with often elaborate "Rood Screens." Lenten veiling owes its origin to the "Fasting Veil" or "Hungercloth" in tenth' century. Veiling images, and even the sanctuary for the whole of Lent was especially popular in Medieval England. Fr. Josef Jungmann, in Public Worship: A Survey, briefly explains the rationale. The statues, after all, show the saints in their heavenly glory, and the crucifix of that period represented Christ as the triumphant king. According to English Medieval usage, a Lenten veil was drawn across the sanctuary. It was parted only for the proclamation of the Gospel on Sundays. A veil also shrouded the crucifix on the Rood beam above the sanctuary. Both these veils were made of an unbleached heavy fabric. Known as "Lenten Array," the veils usually had emblems of red, black or blue stenciled on them. The emblems frequently represented what had been veiled. There has been a limited revival of Lenten Array in the Anglican Church and some traditional Catholic Churches have reintroduced the veiling of images for Lent.

3 Page Three Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2009 Lenten Array in Southwark Cathedral Lent is a season at home with paradox. It is a time to discipline our sensory appetites to prepare for a spiritual feast, to die to self so that we may rise with Christ. Lent takes us to the desert and to the mountaintop. No Sunday in Lent gives us more hope and courage than this Sunday. The Transfiguration gives us a preview of Easter. It lifts the veil to reveal Christ's identity and destiny. His divinity shines through His humanity. Unlike Moses whose face reflected God s glory, Christ radiates divine light from within. He stands between Moses and Elijah, the greatest figures in the Old Testament and yet He is the "only begotten Son." He is above all creatures. The Dayspring Hymnal lyric captures the significance of what is being revealed to Peter, James and John and to us. Transfigured on Mount Tabor's height, a new creation was unveiled; yet You, alone, could show us what this path to glory would entail... The scandal of the cross will lead to the glory of the resurrection. What has been hidden is now made known. The Lenten veil has become transparent with the Light of Christ. - Fr. Luczak

The book of Exodus recounts how the Jews escaped from slavery in Egypt and made a covenant with God on Mt. Sinai. The heart of that covenant is this: God promises to accept the Israelites as his people; and they must promise to keep God s commandments. I CORINTHIANS: Paul writes to his Corinthian converts about the difficulty in preaching about a crucified savior. To Jewish people who looked for a powerful Messiah performing spectacular signs, it seemed unacceptable that the Messiah would suffer and die. To Gentiles it seemed entirely absurd that someone who died such a humiliating death could be the savior of the world. Lent at Saint John Brebeuf School Saint John Brebeuf School students celebrate Lent with various activities to remind them of the 40 days Lenten journey in preparation for Easter. Our theme is Journey - Walking with Jesus. On Ash Wednesday, the students received ashes in church during the 8:45 a.m. Liturgy. For lunch they were encouraged to eat a simple meal. The money that would have been spent on treats or desserts was collected and donated to South America to be used for children with medical problems. During our Lenten journey, each classroom will display a large cross in the hallway. The children will decorate and write a promise on a small cross telling how they will walk with Jesus during the Lenten Season. The smaller crosses will be glued onto the large cross that is displayed in the hallway. Sunday, March 8 The children will also have the opportunity to read and reflect on Scripture readings that will be read over the P.A. system during morning prayers. Children are also asked to pray, meditate, and reflect on their daily actions in life and strengthen their good deeds to prepare for Easter.

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
