2 Page Two Christ the King November 23, 2008 PANTOCRATOR is hands outstretched in intercession for the whole Church. Christ, sometimes vested as High Priest, is shown within a mandala. The mandala-- "a circle within a square"-- is a symbol of the universe. Within its quadrants are less prominent images of angels and the Four Evangelists. Christ raises his right hand in blessing. His left hand holds a Book of the Gospels. The Pantocrator is not only a central feature of the iconostasis, but may appear as part of a "Last Judgment" scene or a larger mosaic or fresco above the Sanctuary. The Lord is King, in splendor robed... He has made the world firm, not to be moved -Psalm 93, 1 "Pantocrator" means the "Ruler of All. It is more than a word. It is an image of the WORD MADE FLESH who is "robed" in power and majesty. Greek artists and theologians recognized in Christ the dynamic union between the divine and the human, the spiritual and the sensory. Church buildings and iconography reflected that vision." Oddly enough, what Western Christians have seen as an obstacle- - the iconostasis- - symbolically divides heaven" and "earth'" only to unify them through the celebration of the Liturgy. Taken as a whole, the iconostasis represents a hierarchy of being in the perspective of Christian faith. At the highest level, we find Christ Pantocrator, Ruler of the Universe and Savior of All. Beneath that icon are scenes from the life of Christ. In a continuous flow, there are images of apostles, angels and saints. Beside the icon of the Pantocrator on the right, is the Blessed Virgin Mary and on the left is St. John the Baptist. Other "holy ones" are likewise represented. Each is turned toward Christ enthroned. The gesture of the holy ones One of my favorite versions of Christ Pantocrator is the magnificent mosaic in the apse of the 12th Century Cathedral of Cefalu in Sicily. Cefalu reveals one of history's unexpected triumphs--a Norman King of Sicily and Greek artists from Constantinople produced a Latin Rite Cathedral with outstanding Byzantine art. After eight centuries, the impact of Cefalu's Christ Pantocrator is still spiritually compelling. In his The Normans in Sicily, John Julius Norwich leaves us with a vivid impression of the image and its power. He is Pantocrator, the Ruler of All. His right hand is raised to bless; in his left he carries a book, open at the text beginning

It is written in Latin and Greek- - and rightly so; for this mosaic, the glory of a Roman church, is itself the purest Byzantine style and workmanship... (The artist has) produced the most sublime representation of the Pantocrator--perhaps of Christ in any form--in all Christian art. Only one other, at Daphni near Athens, can be said even to rival it,,, (but) the contrast between the two could hardly be greater. The Christ of Daphni is dark, heavy with menace; the Christ of Cefalu, for all his strength and majesty, has not forgotten that his mission is to redeem. There is nothing soft or syrupy about him; yet the sorrow in his eyes, the openness of his embrace, even the two stray locks blown gently across his forehead, bespeak his mercy and com passion. Byzantine theologians used to insist that religious artists, in their representations of Jesus Christ should seek to reflect the image of God. It is no small demand; but here, for once, the task has been triumphantly accomplished. For me, Christ Pantocrator affords an awesome glimpse of the Kingship of Our Lord, but it is not the only image upon which we should dwell. Reflect also on the Infant King, the "Lord who reigns from the Cross and the Shepherd King. All these images can and do teach us much about the Lord! - Fr. 4 Page Four Christ the King November 23, 2008 SPIRITUAL LIFE TO COMFORT AND REMEMBER Parishioners who have experienced the death of a family member or friend in the past year or who are observing the death anniversary of someone dear to them are invited to the annual Bereavement Prayer Service today, Sunday, at 3:00 p.m. in Church. The service will include an honoring of the memory of those who have died with a calling of their names and the giving of a small remembrance to those who grieve their passing. You are welcome to bring a photo of your loved one to be placed on a table during the service. Refreshments will follow in the Holy Family Room. RCIA Today we celebrated the reception of baptized Christian Leigh Ann Costello into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Sponsored by her husband, Bob, and supported by the RCIA team Leigh Ann made her profession of faith, and then was confirmed by Fr. Luczak. Later in the Mass she received the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. WELCOME, LEIGH ANN! We are happy to have you with us sharing God s faith, hope and love! THANKSGIVING DAY MASS The Thanksgiving Day Mass will be at 9:00 a.m. this Thursday, November 27. All are welcome to come and give thanks for the blessings we have received and for the opportunities we have had to share them. THANKSGIVING TABLE BLESSING O God Provider, we thankfully acknowledge you as the giver of all things that are necessary or the sustenance of our bodies. Keep us always in your grace and love; redeem us through your only Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Dear Father of all mercies, we thank you for our daily bread. Help us all each day to radiate more cheerfulness and happiness. May we give more attention to the little things of life. In thoughts, words, and deeds, help us to be truly like you. Lord, we thank you for this place in which we dwell; for the love that unites us; for the peace accorded us this day; for the hope with which we expect on the morrow; for the health, the work, the food, and the bright skies that make our lives delightful; for our friends in all parts of the earth. Amen. (Robert Louis Stevenson) ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING Families and individuals are again invited to participate in the lighting of the Advent Wreath the four weeks of the season. The weekend of Nov the wreath will be lit during the blessing which will take place after the Prayer of the Faithful. For all other weekends it will be lit at the beginning of each Mass. Please sign up in the Holy Family Room today or contact the RE Office, 847/ , this week. Arrive about ten minutes before Mass to find your seats and to look over the instructions in the sacristy. It s a special way to help call our community to prayer as we await the coming of the Lord in this season of quiet anticipation and hope-filled preparation.

5 Page Five Christ the King November 23, 2008 SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISSION The Spiritual Life Commission will meet on Tuesday, December 2 nd, at 7:30 p.m. in the RE Office. We will continue our plans for the Parish Mission and the Lent series. MASS AT FEDERAL PLAZA In honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and of the unborn, Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., will preside at an outdoor Solemn Mass at Federal Plaza, 50 West Adams Street, in downtown Chicago, on Friday, December 12 th, at Noon. This is a history-making, first-ever Mass in Federal Plaza and is being sponsored by the Archdiocesan Office for Hispanic Catholics, the Respect Life Office, and the Office for Peace and Justice in collaboration with the Pro-Life Action League and the Thomas More Society Pro-Life Law Center. We have arranged for a bus to leave from the church parking lot at 10:30 a.m. that day. It will return after the Mass (about 2:30 p.m.?). RSVP to the Religious Education Office, 847/ , by Friday, December 5th. We need at least 25 people to have the bus. Invite friends and neighbors you know from other parishes to come along with us! Dress warmly and come make history for the Catholic presence in the Archdiocese of Chicago! ABOUT NEXT WEEK S READINGS READINGS FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Isaiah 63:16B-17, 19B, 64:2-7 Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, I Corinthians 1:3-9; Mark 13:33-37 ISAIAH: The Israelites had just returned from exile and were suffering economic hardship and persecution. The prophet expresses their expectation that God will enter human history in a dramatic way and help them. At the end of this reading, we will hear a familiar image. I CORINTHIANS: In the letter-writing style popular in Paul s day, writers would begin by extending greetings and then thank the gods for the blessings they themselves had received. But Paul begins his first letter to the Corinthians by thanking God for the blessings his Corinthian converts have received. (It may help to know that the phrase day of the Lord refers to Jesus coming again in glory.) EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS *RE Families should have received letters regarding the Conference schedule for Monday, November 24 th. Please remember that you can contact the Catechist directly to set up a time to talk, if one was not scheduled but you would like to meet. There will be no class on Monday, November 24 th, for Grs. 1-Confirmation Year II because of conferences. *The RE Faculty and Staff wish the entire parish community a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful for your support and prayers throughout the year as together we pass on the Faith as well as the Tradition of the Church to all those entrusted to our care. The plan is to reschedule Joseph Durepos multi-media presentation after the holidays. However, we do invite you to mark your calendars with the other dates of the series and hope you will make a point of being with us: +Thursday, February 12, 7:00 p.m. Moral Teaching/Christian Virtue in St. Paul with Dr. Jim Papendrea +Tuesday, April 21, 7:00 p.m. Resurrection and St. Paul with Dr. Papendrea HUMAN CONCERNS November is American Diabetes Month Part 2 The focus of this month s National Health Observance is on kids and diabetes because your child has a one-in-three chance of a future with diabetes. (1) Type 1 (a.k.a. juvenile-onset or insulin-dependent) tends to run in families and, by racial groupings, is more common in Caucasians. It is thought that those who will be diagnosed with Type 1 are born with the tendency to develop it and its onset seems to be triggered by a series of different viral infections which cause the body to attack its own insulin-producing pancreas cells. Type 2 (adult-onset or non-insulindependent) generally is seen in adults but is becoming more common in overweight children & has family & ethnic/ racial connections among African Americans, Hispanics/ Latinos & Native Americans. Type 2 results from inheriting genes that cause insulin resistance, which increases the body s need for insulin, decreases production of insulin by the pancreas, or unhealthy behaviors (too many calories, too little exercise) leading to weight gain which increases insulin resistance. While we may be unable to control our children s family tree or the genes they inherit, we can help them to adopt healthy behaviors which may lessen their chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. A balanced diet made up of proportionate amounts (based on age/ weight) of carbohydrates, protein and fat will go a long way to maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise will help burn calories and aid the body in properly utilizing sugar, which will impact weight and insulin resistance. Learn more about healthy diets by talking with your child s pediatrician or school health professional, surfing the American Dietetics Association or the American Diabetes Association web sites or attending classes at your local hospital. In the meantime, keep your kids active and limit their time playing computer/ video games or watching TV. Control how much fast food they eat in a week and cut back on snacks such as chips, sweet desserts and candy. Focus on serving 5-a-day of fruits and vegetables. If we can teach our kids now about healthy eating and exercise, perhaps fewer of them will face a future with diabetes. Have a good week! Every year the St. Vincent De Paul members of St. Isaac Jogues make the pilgrimage to our neighboring nursing homes bringing gifts, music and cheer. We are dependent on the support of our parishioners and are reminding you that we will have "Giving Tree" envelopes in the bulletins the week of November Please return them with your regular contributions the following week. We can use all nonperishable foods. There will be containers at all of the entrances of the church. You will be fulfilling the corporal work of mercy, "Feed the hungry" and you will be helping to alleviate hunger in our community. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
