2 Page 2 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 26, 2010 Blessed John Henry Newman Heart Speaks To Heart John Henry Newman s recovery from a high fever in Sicily convinced him that God had spared his life for some great work in England. He returned to Oxford on July 9, Five days later, his colleague, John Keble, preached an eloquent and inflammatory assize sermon. Its theme, National Apostasy, not only exposed the worldly, uninspired compromises of contemporary Anglicanism, it appealed to those who sincerely desired to revive the beauty and spiritual integrity of former times. This was the beginning of what came to be known as the Oxford Movement. Of the clergy responsible for the movement, Richard William Church, observed it was Keble who inspired, Froude who gave the impetus and Newman who took up the work. The way that Newman took up the work of the Oxford Movement initially was through publishing Tracts for the Times. The tracts most of which were written by Newman himself were solid historically and increasingly Catholic in spirit. Newman viewed the Anglican Church as the Via Media ( The Middle Way ) between Roman Catholicism and popular Protestantism. Gradually, Newman s aim to reconcile the Via Media with its core Catholicism led him into a major controversy. Tract 90, the last of the series, proposed that The Thirty-nine Articles of Anglican religion in the Book of Prayer were not against the authorized creed of Roman Catholics, but only against popular errors and exaggerations. Tract 90 caused a firestorm of protest among important churchmen. The Bishop of Oxford insisted that the publication of tracts be ended. While Newman continued to write for the British Critic, he eventually withdrew to his quasi-monastic retreat at Littlemore. There he completed one of his most important essays On The Development of Christian Doctrine. From his study and analysis of the Early Church Fathers, Newman found inherent flaws in his own argument for the essential Catholicity of the Anglican Church. He would later say: to know history is to cease being a Protestant. On October 9, 1845, John Henry Newman ceased to be a Protestant. In his tiny chapel at Littlemore, Newman was received into the Roman Catholic Church by an Italian Passionist priest, Fr. Dominic Barberi (now Blessed Dominic Barberi). For Newman, the kindly light had led him to conversion. It was, as one of his many book titles would suggest, a matter of Loss and Gain. He severed his connections with Oxford. Approximately a year after he was received into the Catholic Church, he was ordained a priest. Newman s religious life was almost evenly split forty-five years as an Anglican and forty-four years as a Catholic. He became an Oratorian and, in 1854, at the request of the Irish Bishops, went to Dublin to serve as rector of the newly established Catholic University of Ireland. The only enduring contribution Newman made there was a critically acclaimed volume of lectures on Education, The Idea of a University. Newman s best efforts often met with frustration or opposition. He was involved in a libel suit with Giacinto Achilli, an anti-catholic former Dominican. He was more seriously slandered by writer, Charles Kingsley, who claimed for Dr. Newman, Truth is No Virtue. Kingsley s attack on Newman and Catholicism prompted a sublime defense against the ridiculous. His Apologia Pro Vita Sua is a spiritual autobiography, but even more a revelation of the depth of Newman s inner life his heart and mind. Surprising to Catholic liberals who have lionized Newman, is his total lack of sympathy for the relativism of his day. Ironically, it was called

3 Page 3 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 26, 2010 Liberalism. Newman believed that the Protestant emphasis on subjective experience neglected objective truth. He left the Church of England because it was schismatic in origin and could never recover holiness, apostolicity and catholicity. Newman mistrusted private judgment in spiritual matters because it was not a sufficient guide for discerning spiritual life. Newman s greatest gift was that, through authoritative doctrine and objective truth, he was able to transcend himself. He had left behind the anti- Catholicism of his youth, the bad impression of misguided piety and perceived corruption. He abandoned prejudice. He had been hurt and cutoff by friends. He was attacked by enemies. Pope Pius IX welcomed him, gave him a Doctorate, but never fully trusted him. Finally, in old age, Pope Leo XIII made him a Cardinal. His motto was Cor ad Cor Loquitur ( Heart speaks to Heart ). In the course of his long and eventful life, he saw many changes. Perhaps that is why Blessed John Henry Newman described the path to perfection as he once did: In a higher world it may be otherwise, but, here below, to live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often! - Fr. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Wedding Bans Rocio Garcia and Jorge Kurita

From her canonization in 1925, her statues and windows adorn most churches where European immigrants worshiped. Entering Carmel at fifteen, victim of tuberculosis at twenty-four, Therese proposed her Little Way to sanctity: doing ordinary tasks with extraordinary love. Thus ordinary Catholics, many of whom had lost loved ones to tuberculosis, embraced her. Though she never left her cloister, this Carmelite s spiritual communion and devoted correspondence with missionaries earned her the title Patroness of Missions. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, continuously in print since her death, chronicles her prayerful perseverance through doubt and caused her to be the youngest person ever named a Doctor of the Church. Countless physical healings and spiritual conversions testify to her fulfillment of her deathbed promise: After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth! Peter Scagnelli, Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Keep the commandment without stain or reproach Until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ Timothy 6:14

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
