2 Page Two Second Sunday of Lent February 28, 2010 From the Pastor REFLECTIONS FOR A LENTEN JOURNEY Hawthorne s Veiled Minister Two great qualities that have made me an enthusiastic reader of Nathaniel Hawthorne are the pure beauty of his style and his deep perception of human nature. Hawthorne's heritage is unmistakably Puritan. He has a high moral tone that cannot escape, at the same time, a fascination with sin and the dark side of human nature. He was no doctrinaire Calvinist, nor much of a churchgoer, but Hawthorne was sincerely religious. He does not have to write God into his stories because God is so much a part of his perception of people and the world. He is less a Puritan than a Christian in his emphasis on humanity and compassion over narrow legalism. His conviction is that for the greatest sinner there is redemption through love. For Hawthorne, evil characters are those who set themselves up as gods. They lose their humanity by being superhuman. In viewing his scientists in Rapaccini s Daughter" and "The Birthmark, one is not far from Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein." They seek perfection, but they poison and kill even what they love. One of the reasons why I recommend Hawthorne's stories as a Reflections for a Lenten Journey" is that they really challenge us. They are Christian in theme, but they also have the ambiguity of art. In that, they can be both satisfying and mystifying if we ponder their significance. "The Minister's Black Veil" was my choice from many possibilities. It is a stunning, disturbing story. Reverend Mr. Hooper, a kindly, erudite "man of the cloth suddenly appears with a black veil covering most of his face. The minister preaches a sermon on "secret sin." While not a dynamic preacher, his dark, gloomy message combined with the spectral aspect of his veiled face more than unsettles his congregation. They wonder what is wrong with the minister? Why is he so eccentric? Deeper than these questions is the fear that they conceal - - fear about the revelation of their own secret sins. After the church service, Mr. Hooper officiates at the funeral of a young lady. Hawthorne suggests there may have been "something" between them. Why should the minister be "fearful of her glance? Why do some of the mourners "fancy that the minister and the maiden s spirit were walking hand in hand? It is a telling moment in the story, but no revelation. Some, including Edgar Allan Poe, have concluded that, behind the minister s black veil is the "secret sin" of fornication. But does that really explain the black veil? There is much more to the minister's determination to shroud his face. In what may be considered the turning point of the story, Mr. Hooper encounters his fiancee, Elizabeth. She tries to persuade him to remove the veil for her. He will not make her an exception. He explains : " this veil is a type and a symbol... no mortal eye will see it withdrawn... I, perhaps like most other mortals, have sorrows enough to be typified by a black veil." Of course, Elizabeth is disturbed! Not only is she insulted that he will not remove the veil for one whom he has promised to wed, but she fears how others will speculate on what has caused him to hide his face. She begs him to avert unnecessary scandal. Mr. Hooper then alludes to a perception that will be fully articulated on his deathbed: If I hide my face for sorrow, there is cause enough... if I cover it for a secret sin, what mortal might not do the same... After this illusion to the veil s "prophetic" significance, Mr. Hooper's life changes radically. He and Elizabeth break off their engagement. His life behind the veil is well-defined and more "efficient somehow. Even his converts feel that they too have been "behind the black veil with him." He is much sought after especially for the dying. He is affectionately called "Father Hooper because of his compassion and readiness to serve. His black veil becomes like the "Scarlet Letter" -- a symbol of guilt that is "redeemed" through loving actions.

3 Page Three Second Sunday of Lent February 28, 2010 Dramatically, Mt. Hooper's death becomes the great climactic moment. He is attended by Elizabeth, his former fiancee. Rev. Mr. Clark from Westbury is there to offer prayers and comfort to the still veiled, dying man. Mr. Clark and others urge him more strongly than ever to remove the veil. With all his strength Mr. Hooper refuses! All are amazed at his strength and tremble. He tells them in his final words: "Tremble also for each other! Have men avoided me, and women shown no pity, and children screamed and fled, only for my black veil? What, but the mystery which it obscurely typifies, has made this piece of crape so awful? When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best beloved; when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his Creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his sin; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived and die! I look around me, and, lo, on every visage is a Black Veil. Had Hawthorne ended his story with Mr. Hooper ' s deathbed revelation, I would have been certain that Mr. Hooper was Hawthorne's version of an Old Testament-style prophet. His veil marks him as a penitent, but his attitude is not of a private penitent, but a prophetic figure. He preaches about secret sin. His veil bears witness to "secret sin" in public. How often did God command prophets to say or do strange things to get His people to say and do the right things? "The Minister's Black Veil" would have satisfied a homilists need to end on a "God note. But Hawthorne is not preaching. His story is no homily. While I am ambivalent on Mr. Hooper's final decision to die and be buried in the veil, how is one to take Hawthorne's end notes? "The grass of many years has sprung up and withered on that grave, the burial stone is moss-grown, and good Mr. Hooper's face is dust; but awful is still the thought that it mouldered beneath the Black Veil!" What is Hawthorne saying about Hooper's lifelong type or symbol? What is he saying about the ultimate meaning of the veil? What Mr. Hooper did for his congregation -- shaking them up, making them reflect on their sins, caring for their needs-- made his ministry successful. What did he do to himself? He became a sign of sin sin redeemed by compassionate deeds. But should not there be more for a prophet in the end than a destiny in the dust? If "The Minister's Black Veil" does nothing else to make your Lent more fruitful, it may lead you to make a more complete Examination of Conscience! -Fr. Luczak FINANCIAL RECAP This past week saw our collections fall further behind our budget. The chart below shows that we have fallen behind an additional $2,026 in the last week. This brings us to a shortfall of $5,089 for the month and $11,627 for the year! We need every worshipper s help to overcome the shortfall in collections. Each weekend we have almost 1,800 worshippers at St. Isaacs. If each person increases their contribution by just $2.00 a week we will be able to meet our budget and avoid the consequences of a budget deficit. Please help. Our thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Parish s support. Since its inception, a growing group of prayerful & eager artisans have been knitting & crocheting shawls that will find their ways to those needing physical & spiritual comfort. Currently 13 women are part of the ministry &, to date, 12 shawls have been completed. It is the intent of Wrapped in His Love that shawl makers donate only their skills & prayers. Until recently, all yarn & book purchases had been made possible through a monetary donation. That seed money, however, has dwindled & we are in need of additional funds & materials. If you have skeins (full preferred) of acrylic yarns like Simply Soft, Soft Boucle, Homespun, Red Heart in light to medium colors & are willing to donate them, we would graciously receive them. Don t have any on hand? Just clip the Jo-Ann, Michael s or Hobby Lobby coupons for 40% off a regular item &, over a month s time, purchase one skein of yarn each week until you have three or four. Your donations can be dropped off at the Parish Nurse s Office in the Ministry Center. If you have questions, please contact Pat Kellen at

PARISH LIFE THINK SPRING Flowers... Vegetables 2011 The 2011 Mass Book was opened on Thursday, February 18, Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. A Spring Plant Sale is coming here at St. Isaacs! Time to start thinking green - spring - planting flowers. An order form will be in the bulletin. Paid orders must be in by Palm Sunday, March 28. Pick up is here at SI. Isaacs on Saturday May 15th. Watch bulletin for more details. Thank you for your support and happy planting.

7 Page Seven Second Sunday of Lent February 28, 2010 All are invited to share in the St. Joseph Table celebration next weekend. This tradition gives glory to God, honors St. Joseph, encourages community building, and assists the needy. While a meatless table we will have a wonderful array of pastas, egg dishes, vegetables, fruits, sweets and beverages. All the food will have been donated through the generosity of parishioners, interested friends, and local businesses. There is no charge to come and eat at the St. Joseph Table. Donations are appreciated and will be used to help those in need. If you have made a promise of food for the St. Joseph Table, the food must be brought down to the Parish Hall on Saturday, March 6, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Because the parking lot will be partially blocked off for the safety of the children attending Polish School that morning, we will have runners outside near the Holy Family Room to bring the food in if you cannot. You may also come in the doors near the small ramp in the circle driveway in front of the school. The viewing and blessing of the St. Joseph Table will be on Saturday, March 6, at 6 p.m. followed by the serving of sweets and coffee for a short time. The St. Joseph Table Mass will be at Noon on Sunday, March 7 th, followed by a blessing and the serving of food, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Please note that no one will be able to come and view the table on Sunday until it is time to serve the food at 1:30 p.m. The line to come down to the table will form in the Holy Family Room as only so many can be served at one time. If you are not part of the initial group that comes down, please know that you will be able to hear the blessing over the sound system in the Holy Family Room. Everyone s patience and cooperation will be appreciated! Donations of food are still welcome!! Please contact one of the following people or just bring it to the Parish Hall on Saturday at the times listed above. Thank you! We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
