2 Page Two Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 6, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR In response to inquiries about my status as pastor, early in September of 2013, I requested an extension of my term as pastor and a postponement of my retirement. While I had assurance that my request had been approved, I waited for an official confirmation before making a public statement. On June 23, I received a letter from Cardinal George that has given me the extension I requested. A copy of the Cardinal s letter is in today s bulletin. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve St. Isaac Jogues for another year. God willing, this time of extended grace will be filled with blessings for all! -Fr. Luczak

I would like to thank all of those who prepared for, attended and participated in the annual Parish Council and Commission reports. The time spent developing and presenting the reports is greatly appreciated. I also want to thank those who offered observations and constructive feedback for the growth of the parish and of the council. The well-being of Saint Isaac Jogues is in all of our hearts and to that end we need everyone s prayers and support. May everyone have a safe and happy summer. Through our case for the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign our parish will help pass on the faith, assist people of all ages to grow in their faith, and make our church and facilities more welcoming, safe, and useful. Through the Archdiocesan case the campaign will ensure scholarships, quality Catholic education in schools and religious education programs, needed improvements of buildings and more. As we move toward our goal of $825,000 we appeal to those who have not yet responded to the campaign to please pray and consider how you can help accomplish God s will for our parish! What sacrifice can you make to ensure that the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ are proclaimed to others, to assist Catholics in the witness and living of their faith, to evangelize both those who have and have not heard the Gospel, to worship and learn in a place that is safe and inviting? Please don t think about your response in comparison to others. The TTWCI Campaign has always been about equal sacrifice, not equal gift! Every gift is important. Your support, to the best of your ability, will make a difference! Information packets and pledge cards for the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign are available in the Holy Family Room. There can be two arrangements each week. Your name and intention is listed in the Bulletin. The cost of a flower arrangement is $50. Altar flowers will be available from the weekend of June 15th through Thanksgiving Day, November 27th. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children come each year as no one year suffices in providing what is important for a strong faith foundation. Students preparing for sacraments must attend for the two immediate years prior to receiving each sacrament. If families have children with special needs or who have not received their sacraments, we would be happy to meet with you and discuss options. There is a tuition, book fees and sacrament fees (as applicable). Families with financial concerns are encouraged to talk with us as no child is denied religious education because of finances. All are welcome! All are encouraged to complete this important task now! The Kindergarten class meets on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. All other classes meet on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. We begin in late August and finish in mid-may. An Initiation Class is also provided for older children who have not yet received their First Reconciliation or First Communion. FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES in July presents Lincoln directed by Steven Spielberg. The 2012 hit movie that won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Daniel Day-Lewis. It also stars Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and Hal Holbrook. Lincoln will be shown this Friday, July 11 th at 6:30 p.m. downstairs in the Parish Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. We re starting earlier because the film is 2 ½ hours long. The film, popcorn and beverages are complimentary. All are welcome bring your friends. Since this is the time of our country s birthday, we thought this to be the perfect movie to show about one of our greatest Presidents ever, Abraham Lincoln. Presented on a new 12 foot wide movie screen, the film will inspire you. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Confirmation is complicated, at least in its history. It arose in response to real problems deeply felt, not the least of which was the desire of the bishop to minister to all who were baptized. But it also has to do with the early crisis of how to deal with persons baptized by congregations that had broken bonds with the greater church: heretics. People reasoned that no matter how wrong-headed the minister might be, Christ would always work in the waters of baptism. No matter what, God would sweep aside all human obstacles to claim the new life in the water. They were not so sure about the ability of someone who had broken with the church to confer the Spirit. By the fifth century, already-baptized persons coming into the church were anointed with chrism but not rebaptized. This anointing with myron or chrism was seen as an act of reconciliation by the church, and a seal upon the commitments vowed by the newcomer. Today, we preserve this ancient practice by never rebaptizing Christians who have been baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Next Sunday, July 13, at 3 p.m. in the Holy Family Room many of Chicago s top cabaret acts will perform here for the Sixth Annual Concert in honor of the late, great Buddy Charles (Gries), our parishioner and one of Chicago s top entertainers, and to benefit St. Isaac Jogues Parish! Who Wrote That Song? will be an afternoon of songs by writers that every singer and musician knows and most audiences don t. Music, singing, laughter, and a great time for the incredibly low price of only $20! All proceeds go to St. Isaac Jogues thanks to the generosity of the performers, some of Buddy s friends! Those scheduled to appear include Audrey Morris, Joel Barry, Anne Burnell, Mark Burnell, Steve Heliotes, Ernie Lane, Paul Marinaro, Bob Moreen, Bob Solone, Scott Urban and special guests Pat Gries (Mrs. Buddy Charles) and Fr.
