2 Page Two Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Church Improvements Central Focus (Part II) The Crucifix What is the most striking thing about our Sanctuary? Many people would say the stained glass screen behind the altar. The design is abstract. It doesn t represent anything in particular. Was it meant to be more than a colorful room divider? One parishioner was convinced that the multicolored panels symbolized All Souls. In the April 5, 1992 Sunday Bulletin, I finally found the official answer: The theme that the Renovation Committee and the Design Committee worked with was Nations shall walk by your light. That notion is expressed artistically in the design behind the worship area. We who are the many nations but one body gather around God s Word and Sacrament seeking the Light that is the Lord Jesus. Is that what we are supposed to see? I don t. Symbolism shouldn t be that far from the obvious! Film critic Roger Ebert has said: If you have to ask what it symbolizes, it didn t. The windows could function anywhere. WHY ARE THEY IN THE SANCTUARY? Far more relevant and recognizable as a symbol would be the Crucifix. A Crucifix is a cross bearing the image of Christ. For centuries, the Church has required that a crucifix be placed on or near an altar where Mass is offered. St. Isaac Jogues complies with this regulation with a processional crucifix. Most of the Liturgical year, it is on the central axis behind the altar. A significant improvement would be to restore the large crucifix now on the back of the wall of the Chapel to the Sanctuary. Why would this be desirable? 1. Clear SIGN focus -- Vatican II s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy tells us: In the liturgy the sanctification of man is signified by signs perceptible to the senses, and is effected in a way which corresponds with each of these signs: in the liturgy, the whole public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, that is, the Head and the Members. (#7) The Crucifix reminds the faithful that the Mass is Christ s Sacrifice. Christ must be the head of the worshiping community both in the person of the priest celebrating Mass and symbolically as the center of worship attention. MASS IS A MYSTERY IN WHICH WE PARTICIPATE, BUT IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT US! Hence, even if the stained glass screen were representational, if it portrayed us as many nations, but one body, it would show us without a HEAD! 2. Congregational Orientation in Christ -- Our Church has the advantage of being laid out in such a way that the congregation faces East for the Liturgy. This is an ancient and venerable practice going back to the early church. Facing East brings us to the awareness that Christ is the Light of the World. The natural phenomenon of the rising sun helps us to understand this. But it is Christ, shown upon the cross, who reinforces our faith that the Sacrifice of Cavalry is made present on the altar so that we may meet the Risen Lord in Holy Communion. Furthermore, our orientation before the Crucifix reminds us that Christ, who died and rose, will also come again!

3 Page Three Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pope Benedict XVI s reflections and directives on the Liturgy have led some to call his efforts the reform of the reform. At the heart that reform is the centrality of Christ. Even moving the cross to the side of the altar for an uninterrupted view of the priest prompted him to say: Is the cross disruptive during Mass? Is the priest more important than the Lord? This mistake should be corrected as quickly as possible... The Lord is the point of reference. Our Liturgy and our church building can be greatly improved if we move the stained glass and restore the large crucifix to the sanctuary. Our present plan is to use the stained glass where the font will be placed. More will be said in a future article. Let us return Christ to the Center of our Church and make Him the center of our lives! --Fr. Luczak

NATIONAL PILGRIM VIRGIN STATUE On October 13, 1917 God worked a spectacular miracle in Fatima, Portugal, to prove that Our Blessed Lady was appearing to three shepherd children with an important message for our time. This miracle took place in front of 70,000 people including government officials and newspaper reporters, all of whom testified that it actually happened. Two secular newspapers gave complete accounts of the miracle as witnessed by their reporters. This Wednesday, August 8, the World Apostolate of Fatima is bringing to St. Isaac Jogues Parish the national Pilgrim Virgin Statue of the USA. The statue will arrive by 7:30 a.m. and will be greeted with song and prayer. It will remain in the Church until 4:00 p.m. that day. This beautiful image of Our Lady of Fatima was blessed by Pope Paul VI and given to our country by the Bishop of Fatima to carry the important message of Fatima to the United States. It is a message Pope John Paul II said was more important today than ever. All are invited and encouraged to come see this beautiful Statue of Our Lady of Fatima and learn Our Lady s message for obtaining peace and putting an end to abortion and the moral corruption afflicting our country. The prayer schedule will be: 7:30 a.m. Welcoming of Our Lady of Fatima statue; 8:00 a.m. Mass followed by 15 minute talk about the Message of Fatima; 9:00 a.m. Joyful Mysteries; 10:00 a.m. Sorrowful Mysteries; 11:00 a.m. Luminous Mysteries will be prayed and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered in the Reconciliation Room. Father Cam will be available to hear confessions in English and Polish; Noon Angelus and Crown of Our Lady; 1:00 p.m. Glorious Mysteries; 2:00 p.m. Patriotic Rosary; 3:00 p.m. Divine Mercy Chaplet and talk on Message of Fatima; 3:45 p.m. Bidding Our Lady Farewell with prayer and song. 5 Page Five Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time YEAR OF SUNDAY MASS Jesus says, I am the bread of life. And he adds that those who come to him will never hunger. Encountering the living Christ, the bread of life, means that we find the fulfillment of everything we could ever want or need. If, in the Mass, I were truly to meet him who is that fulfillment, how would that encounter reshape and reprioritize my life? In other words, if I believed and truly knew that I already had everything in him, what difference would it make? KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME: DEEPEN Get on with it. We hear that all the time. We even say it to ourselves. We do something and then move on quickly. That s our pace and pretty much the tenor of most of our lives. And how we live does not easily match what we do at Mass. At Mass we stop and linger at the beginning to reflect on our need for mercy, after the readings and homily to consider the Word we have just heard, and after Holy Communion to grasp more surely the mystery now within us. We linger in these moments to deepen our sense of the holy and living one whom we are meeting. We keep returning to the same ritual at Mass. It really doesn t change that much week after week. Even the years of worship repeat the same cycles of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time. Is it just going in circles? No, something else is as work. The cycles deepen the mystery s hold on us and our hold on the mystery. Unlike most of our life, at Mass we go not wide but deep. We stay, we linger, we come to know more. 8 Page Eight Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE BREAD OF LIFE Today s Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three questions. First, When did you get here, to which Jesus responds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a sign, an occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about accomplishing the works of God has Jesus respond that faith is the work that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is John s answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early Christian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is a request for a sign that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as the manna in the desert allowed the Israelites to put faith in the Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as the bread of life that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week will see the summertime celebration of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The story of the Transfiguration is proclaimed twice each year; once on the Second Sunday of Lent, and then again on August 6. In Lent, the revelation of Jesus glory foreshadows the triumph of Easter. During the summer, this feast comes significantly forty days before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In the Gospel proclaimed on this day, Peter wants to know if he should build three tents. In Hebrew, the tents are sukkot, rickety harvest shacks also called in English tabernacles (from the Latin word for little shelters ) that harvesters set up in fields so they can stay there to work day and night. Harvest booths are built and ornamented for the Jewish festival of Sukkot. One aspect of this festival is eager anticipation for the ingathering of all peoples (including ancestors Moses and Elijah) under God s own sukkot shalom, the tent of peace. In some patristic traditions, the late summer and early autumn of the church year are imagined as an extended ingathering festival that begins today and reaches fulfillment at Epiphany. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: The Transfiguration of the Lord Tuesday: St. Sixtus II and Companions; St. Cajeta Wednesday: St. Dominic Thursday: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Friday: St. Lawrence Saturday: St. Clare BULLETIN SICK LIST The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily. LINDA BENNETT DON CAMACHO KATHERINE WILLIAMS DYLEN WILLIAMS DEBBIE TERZAKIS
