2 Page Two Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, 2014 TEACH WHO CHRIST IS : It Begins with Meeting Christ This is not the first time you have heard about To TEACH WHO CHRIST IS. It is a Campaign in the Chicago Archdiocese for Catholic Education and Faith Formation. Yes, its objective is to raise money for schools and programs in the Archdiocese. Whether Religious Education for the young, youth outreach, lay or deacon ministerial training, programs are part of a network for discipleship in the Church today. The buildings that provide worship space and instruction are places where we meet Christ and teach who Christ is. Method actors are famous for looking at a script and asking the director, WHAT S MY MOTIVA- TION? I m sure many Catholics who are hearing about To Teach Who Christ Is are asking the same question. J. D. Salinger once said: See Christ and you are a Christian. All else is talk. In today s Gospel, ordinary fishermen see Christ. They meet Him when they are busy. Yet, when, He says, Follow me, they abandon their nets. It is a powerful meeting that changes who they are and what they will do. Jewish philosopher Martin Buber describes what happened to them and what ought to happen to us as an I-Thou encounter. Such an encounter involves consciousness and interaction on the highest personal level. Buber puts it eloquently when he says: All actual life is encounter... All real living is meeting. The fishermen no longer need nets. Christ calls them to be a network. Their mission is not only to proclaim a message, but to teach WHO HE IS! Sadly, too many who consider themselves Christian are not like the first disciples. They are more like the scribes and Pharisees for whom faith is all TALK. Religion... Faith can become a selfsatisfying word game, God Talk. Knowledge about God is not the same as knowledge of God. It is what Martin Buber would call an I-It relationship where we perceive an object without meeting a person. We are baptized Catholics, Catholic Christians. As Christians we are meant to see Christ. We see Him in our worship, study, and service. We come to know Him in our personal lives and experience Him in our faith community. To Teach Who Christ Is aims not only to raise funds but to raise up a new generation of disciples with fervor and eagerness to teach and proclaim Jesus Christ. It is my hope that your personal motivation to pledge and work for To Teach Who Christ Is will be a real call to fuller discipleship. I also hope that you can already see Christ in the goals that will benefit our parish and the Archdiocese. Francois Mauriac, the celebrated French author-philosopher, spoke of his own encounter with Christ: Once you know Him, you can never be cured of Him. Pray that, like the first disciples, you may be willing to abandon your nets for Christ s network. We are all called to see Him better and help others to see WHO HE IS. -Fr. Luczak

If you would like to join a committee and share in this opportunity to enhance our relationship with Christ, improve our buildings and increase our Catholic presence in the local community, please come even if you have not been to any meetings up to this point! FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION First Friday Adoration and Devotions dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the healing and guidance of our nation will be on February 7 th, 7:00 10:00 p.m. in Church. We will pray the Patriotic Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the 20 mysteries of the Rosary, and conclude with Benediction. Come spend an hour or two or three with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and assist our nation with the power of prayer. CONFERENCE: NEW WORLD POPE The Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University invites you to a conference New World Pope: Pope Francis and the Future of the Church on February 7 & 8. 4 Page Four Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, If you would like to support our January service project of new white socks for the homeless, please bring your packages to the RE Office by the end of the week. -The next session about our Catholic Faith and how to share it with your children and/or grandchildren will be this Monday, January 27th at 6:45 p.m. in the Holy Family Room and focus on the Creed. All parishioners are welcome! -The Third and Fourth Grade Classes will have their Child Safety Evening with Mrs. Stanton Monday during class. Parents/ Guardians who wish to attend are encouraged to do so. We ll begin at 6:50 p.m. in Room 11. -The February newsletter will be sent home with students on Monday evening. Please be sure to read it. -Confirmation Year II Candidates are asked to please be on time for their meetings with Staff members in the next few weeks. Thanks! BIBLE STUDY We have begun Part II of our Bible study on Israel s Story. The group meets on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. in Room 6 of the school. This is a combination study and faith sharing group. No previous Bible Study experience is necessary and you need not have done Part I of the study in order to join us! The fee for materials is $10, but all are welcome whether you can cover the fee or not. For more information please call the RE Office, 847/ TEEN GROUP The Teen Group invites all Teens to their meeting TODAY. We ll be talking about the Bible and our faith. February activities include our Popcorn Sale the weekend of February 1st and 2nd and our preparation of sack lunches for the homeless on February 23rd. March will have us attending the Youth Awards Banquet in support of those teens from the parish who will be recognized, going to the Parish Lent Retreat afternoon, helping at the St. Joseph Table, and going bowling. POPCORN SALE TO HELP HOMELESS The Teen Group will hold its annual Popcorn Sale the weekend of Feb. 1-2! That s right their popcorn could be part of your Super Bowl snacks! Popcorn will be $1 per bag and the money they raise will be used to make at least 150 sack lunches for the homeless. The lunches will be distributed by Uncle Pete s Ministry. So please support the enthusiasm and service efforts of our youth with your purchase of popcorn (or with your donation if popcorn is not your friend. Thank you!

Moonstruck on Valentine s Day, February 14 th! In ancient times, adults were probably baptized without any clothes at all, and old texts survive asking people to leave fancy garb and jewelry behind as they enter the font. Baptism was typically in a private place, the community waited elsewhere, and the casting off of clothing was hardly a public moment, nor was it embarrassing in ancient cultures where privacy was largely unknown. Nonetheless, what was left behind on one side of the font was replaced on the other as a white robe was wrapped around the newly baptized. It was a robe of honor, a dazzling sign of a new beginning for a society that valued clothing as a sign of personal identity. For the newly baptized, a whole week in white garments was the rule, through the second Sunday of Easter, called Sunday in Albis, because of all the folks wearing their baptismal robes.
