2 Page Two Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 25, 2010 From the Pastor SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES a treasury of untold wealth... these are the props of a director and artist who never forgot what is was like to be a child. "... if eyes were made for seeing, Then Beauty is its own excuse for being. -Ralph Waldo Emerson If asked which films would be on my "top ten" list, I would certainly include Jean Cocteau s 1946 version of "Beauty and the Beast." Last Sunday, the TCM channel ran this elegant classic as part of an off beat double feature. The second film was the 1930 blockbuster, "King Kong." For me, the story lines connect, but the difference is like being served foie gras and then chopped liver! The Cocteau film is a cinematic marvel. Long before high-tech, computer generated special effects and pre-prosthetic makeup, "Beauty and the Beast" created a "dreamscape" of surreal images, a montage of misty forests and airy, sunlit corridors. Should anything surprise us? Cocteau was not only a pioneering filmmaker, he was a poet, painter, sculptor, novelist and playwright. He was a flamboyant eccentric, like Salvatore Dali. As Dali astonishes us with a juxtaposition of images, Cocteau makes us both believe and doubt our senses. In "Beauty and the Beast" two familiar fairy tales are interwoven -- "La Belle et la Bête" by Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont and "La Chatte Blanche" by Marie- Catherine d'aulonoy. The first offers the familiar narrative of Beauty sacrificing herself to save her father's life by coming to live with the Beast. The second presents servants magically reduced to their arms and hands, performing their accustomed duties with eerie efficiency. Cocteau obviously enjoyed the "enchantment. He played at Harry Potter before there was a Harry Potter! The magic of mirrors shows us what we want to know and tells us more about ourselves than we want to accept. This is part of the fun! A magic glove that can transport us instantly and a key that can unlock "Beauty and the Beast " is so much more than charming and picturesque. An ancient equation states that true beauty is goodness. Cocteau s Beauty" is a girl who scrubs floors while her vain and silly sisters entertain delusions of grandeur. She is courted by a handsome scoundrel, but declines his offer of marriage. She and her family are further harmed by a brother whose debts cause her father to be shamed and dispossessed. She is La Belle, ready to give her life for her father. The Beast, who is so fearsome, is also gallant, courtly and polite in her presence. One might say that she reaches his heart. The Beast grows more and more human through his love for Beauty. She cares for him and no longer fears him. Marriage? Of course, that is out of the question! When Beauty gains his permission to care for her dying father, the Beast lets her go. He makes her promise to return in a week or else he shall die of a broken heart. Beauty is torn by her love for her father and her promise to the Beast. When she is tricked by her sisters not to return in a week, she sees, in her mirror, that the Beast is dying. She also discovers that the key to the Beast s treasury has been stolen by her would-be lover and her brother. Using the magic glove, Beauty returns to find the Beast dying. At the moment the beast dies, the scoundrel who claims to love Beauty, breaks into the treasury. Diana, the guardian of the treasury, fires an arrow that kills the would-be thief. All at once, the scoundrel who had courted Beauty, turns into the Beast. Then, the scene shifts and the Beast is transformed into a handsome prince, who looks like the scoundrel! The scene in Cocteau s film recalls Oscar Wilde's preoccupation with real beauty

3 Page Three Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 25, 2010 and real goodness. For Wilde, as for Cocteau, what is external is not necessarily accurate. Our Beauty is beautiful inside and out. The Scoundrel and the Beast reflect opposite realities. At the end of the story, the Beast s exterior brutishness is taken on by the dead scoundrel. The Beast's interior goodness finds its place in a handsome prince. If this reminds us of Wilde's "Dorian Grey" or the death of the dwarf in "The Birthday of the Infanta," it might give us cause to find a strong connection between themes in Wilde and Cocteau. The question about the equation of true beauty and goodness is as old as the ancient Greeks. It is as timeless as legends and fairy tales. The answer to the question will continue to be debated and dramatized. Rarely has the story of Beauty, as presented by Jean Cocteau, ever been more beautifully told! But is real Beauty more than its own excuse for being? For the answer, you might compare "Beauty and the Beast" and "King Kong." -Fr, Luczak Financial Update Last week s collection fell short of the budget target by $1,296. For the year we are $878 behind budget. In comparison to last year the collection declined by $1,472. We wish to express our thanks to all parishioners who have given of their time, talent and treasure to support the Parish. We have a critical need for the following areas. Kitchen The kitchen sells comfort food for our patrons. We offer Sloppy Joes, Tuna Salad, Grilled Cheese and Hot Dogs along with fresh Pop Corn and Candy Bars. The Kitchen is open from 5:30 to approximately 7:30. Preparation begins between 4:00 and 4:30. We need two volunteers to man the kitchen each week. The goal is to have 8 to 12 individuals who would rotate responsibility. Bingo Games The doors for Bingo open at 5:30. Our goal is to have four teams each consisting of five to six workers. The teams are made up of a Leader who oversees operations; a Caller who runs each game; three Floor Walkers who sell Bingo cards and verify winning cards; and a Casher. We are extremely short of help in this area, particularly on the third week of each month. We need 10 to 12 volunteers to man this operation. 4 Page Four Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 25, 2010 SPIRITUAL LIFE CONCLUSION OF CCHC SUMMARY This concludes the summary report, provided by the Office For Evangelization, regarding the Catholics Come Home Chicago (CCHC) process: Seventy-one percent of Pastors reported that CCHC was a benefit to their parish, though there were different ways to define benefit. Some parishes saw an increase in newcomers and people registering as parishioners those Catholics who had come home. An additional benefit was the energy and excitement among parishioners, who felt pride in their faith and a deeper sense of Catholic identity due to the ads and the efforts in the parishes. A third benefit was that Parish Staffs were engaged and enthusiastic about evangelization and they worked to improve many aspects of parish life. Pastors were also asked to write in the instances of hurt or anger that surfaced during the initiative. Of the 201 pastor surveys, 41 Pastors remarked on conversations they had with people regarding topics including the sex abuse scandal, cost of the ads, and doctrinal differences with the Church. Fifteen percent of the Pastors felt that these comments offered opportunity for them to address the issues and begin a period of healing for the individual. We have to stay the course and move forward for an extended period of time we are changing a culture and should continue to push the message. With the encouragement from Pastor and Parish Contact surveys, there will be discussions with the Dioceses of Rockford and Joliet in Summer 2010 to plan for a similar evangelization effort that will be media-oriented to continue the momentum created by CCHC. The second phase will apply all that was learned this past year and it will be developed with an awareness of the success experiences in our parishes. READINGS FOR THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23 Psalm 90:3-6, 12-14, 17 Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11 Luke 12:13-21 ASSISTANT SOUGHT The Religious Education Program is in need of one assistant for the coming year, who would help with the Kindergarten class on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. High School students are encouraged to consider this service opportunity, as well as adults. For further information or to discuss your possible involvement, please call the RE Office, 847/ EDUCATION RE NEWS *Registration for the RE Program (Kindergarten- Confirmation Year II) continues! Families, both returning and new to the program, who have not yet registered, are encouraged to do so soon. We will begin on Monday, August 30 th. Kindergarten classes meet on Sunday morning, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Grs. 1-8 (Confirmation Year II) meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Students must participate in religious education classes (in an RE Program or Catholic School) for at least two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families are strongly encouraged to send their children to religious education every year to assist them in their faith development and formation.

We ll bring everything to them that week. Please bring your donations to the Holy Family Room, and if you have the time please separate items according to signs on the tables. It will be a help to our packing. So start looking for those school supply sales every gift will be a blessing to the new principal, Mr. Dan Fleming, to the children and to the parish. Another Look The following risk assessment is actually half of a two-part document which also features an action plan what to do if you respond yes to any of the questions. For purposes of today s article, I ll feature the survey portion. If you would like a copy of the falls-free plan, just contact me. The assessment & plan are provided by the Washington State Dept. of Health, Injury & Violence Prevention. + Have you had any falls in the last six months? + Do you take four or more prescription or over-the-counter medications daily? + Do you have any difficulty walking or standing? + Do you use a cane, walker, or crutches, or have to hold onto things when you walk? + Do you have to use your arms to be able to stand up from a chair? + Do you ever feel unsteady on your feet, weak, or dizzy? + Has it been more than two years since you had an eye exam? + Has your hearing gotten worse with age, or do your family or friends say you have a hearing problem? + Do you usually exercise less than two days a week? (for less than 30 minutes total each of the days you exercise)+ Do you drink any alcohol daily? + Do you have more than three chronic health conditions? (such as heart or lung problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, etc.) According to the tool s developers, the more Yes responses you have, the greater your chance of having a fall. They recommend that you be aware of what can cause falls and care for yourself in order to stay selfsufficient and free of falls.

To read more about the good done through the Peter's Pence Collection, please visit : LISTENING TO GOD Familiarity, in the case of the Lord's Prayer, probably hasn't bred contempt in most of us, but it certainly can breed a kind of inertia. The words we speak in prayer run the same risks as all our oilier human words: they can be spoken hastily, thoughtlessly, carelessly. In a manner parallel to the words we say in the Lord's Prayer-"forgive us as we forgive others "today might be the day to invite God to "listen to us as well as we listen to you." Today might be the day to listen to the Lord's Prayer with newly attentive ears. The Mass Book is now open. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Let us learn from the example of Luke's Jesus, who would not instruct others how to pray until he himself had been a man of prayer. Moreover, listen carefully to the follow-up Jesus gives for the prayer itself. In our quick-fix society we must heed the call to persistence; in a world that puts glib explanations on difficult situations we must continue to seek and knock; in our all too humanness, we must be open to the patience, grace, and wisdom of the will of God. Whether you find Martha Stewart admirable or annoying, she has the perfect patron saint. Luke describes Martha-saint, not Stewart-as "burdened with much serving" (Luke 10:40). About Mary, seated, listening to Jesus, Martha complained, "Do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?" Jesus' response, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things... Mary has chosen the better part" (10AI, 42), suggests to some the superiority of the contemplative life, leaving the rest of us, supporting families, earning livings, (helping others?), as "second-class" Christians. But Luke introduces Martha and Mary immediately after Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan, whom Jesus recommends as a model of practical compassion, concluding, "Go and do likewise" (10:37). Go and do! Sit and listen! Discipleship is never either/or but both/and. Jesus ministered in prayerful silence and hospitable service. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
