2 Page Two Fourth Sunday of Lent April 3, 2011 LAETARE SUNDAY: Of Golden Roses and Simnel Cakes The Fourth Sunday of Lent is known as Laetare Sunday. This title is taken from the Latin Introit traditionally sung on this day: Laetare, Jersusalem: et conventum facere omnes qui diligitis guadete eam; gaudete et laetitia Rejoice, Jerusalem, come together all that love her; celebrate with joy, you who have in sorrow Before the 1955 reforms and those following Vatican II, "Laetare Sunday" was markedly different from the rest of Lent. Today, rose colored vestments may still be worn. But my old "St. Andrew Missal, published, in 1949, offers a more dramatic picture:... Laetare Sunday is a halting place in the midst of Lenten observance. Therefore, dalmatic and tunicle are worn, the altar is decorated with flowers, the organ is played at Mass and Vespers, even voluntaries are heard. Rose vestments (derived from the blessing of the golden rose, which the pope performs sometimes on that day) may be used. Sometimes, the Liturgy resembles an onion. Layer upon layer of pre-christian elements, natural symbolism, and local customs all combine. In England, for example, Laetare Sunday is called "Mothering Sunday. It can be traced to the ancient Roman feast of Matronalia, which honored motherhood in the spring. At that time, fine white flour cakes were offered at the shrine of the mother-goddess. Christian interpretation and adaptation of the feast achieved a double focus, honoring "Mother Church" and our own mothers. The English Mothering Sunday may include "homecoming" for students or those who work far from their families, gifts of flowers, and Simnel Cakes. The Simnel Cake evolved from the white flour cakes of Matronalia. Simnel Cakes anticipate Easter with marzipan, candied fruit and an unusual topping eleven marzipan eggs to symbolize the eleven faithful apostles (excluding Judas)! Lest there be any doubt, the word Simnel or Mother is piped in the middle of the cake. "Mothering Sunday" may also include a ceremony called "clypping the church." "Clypping" means greeting or honoring. Parishioners, according to this ritual, process outside of their church and form a large circle around it. Holding hands and singing a hymn, they move toward the church and away from the church--very much like the New Year's Eve custom of joining hand and singing Auld Lang Syne. The blessing of a "golden rose" on Laetare Sunday is a papal custom going back hundreds of years. Golden roses have been awarded by popes to heads of state, institutions, shrines, or worthy individuals. The cumulative impact of the development of Laetare Sunday does not detract from its function being an oasis of joy in the desert of Lent. Pioneer liturgical scholar, Pius Parsch, deeply appreciated the symbolism of the rose and its significance for the Fourth Sunday of Lent

3 Page Three Fourth Sunday of Lent April 3, 2011 I see in the rose a beautiful indication of the closeness between joy and suffering; for with roses come thorns The rosebush Is a beautiful representation for the Easter cycle with It two extremes, sorrow over sin and fervent paschal joy... The rose is the harbinger of holy spring which now has come to our souls. As springtime in nature awakens life, so the Church's spring awakens a God-filled life of grace in all Christ's members. Rejoice! Fr. Luczak LAST CALL FOR BINGO? In January we spoke about the critical need for volunteers to staff Friday Night Bingo. That plea for help has met with limited success and we are now at a critical juncture. In order to continue our Bingo operation we need a volunteer, or volunteers, to fill the key role of Bingo Coordinator. This position must be filled in order for us to renew our license with the State of Illinois. As the title implies this position is responsible for overseeing the Bingo operation The person, or persons, filling this role would be the go to person(s) for Friday Night Bingo. This includes the scheduling of workers, the recruiting of workers, and the ordering of supplies. Over the past 30 years Friday Night Bingo has raised significant funds for the Parish. In just the past 5 years Bingo has provided the Parish with an average of $36,000 per year. Please help us to continue this important operation by volunteering. If we are not able to identify a coordinator(s) in the next weeks we will have to suspend Friday Night Bingo by the end of May!. If you can help please contact Fr. Luczak or call the Parish Office at (847) Financial Update Good news! Last Sunday s collection beat our budget target by $234! We will begin with a Liturgy of the Word followed by individual confession and absolution. Confessions can be heard in both English and Polish. All are welcome! SACRISTANS AND USHERS NEEDED Our Sacristan Ministry is looking for people who are willing to help with the cleaning of the church. The ministry is organized into teams and each team serves once a month for an hour to an hour and a half. This important work helps the church to be ready and welcoming for all who come to worship. Several of our Masses could also use more Ushers to help welcome people, take up the collection, see to our orderly procession to Communion and various other tasks of hospitality and assistance. If you think you would be interested in sharing your time and help in one of these ministries, please call the RE Office (847/ ) and leave a message for Helene Kowalik (Sacristan Coordinator), Mark Duval (Usher Coordinator) or Dee Stanton. Thank you!

THE ROMAN MISSAL We continue our series of articles from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (2010) to assist our reflection on the Eucharist, the source and summit of our Christian life, which demands our full, active, and conscious participation. Hearing the Word of God When the Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself is speaking to his people and Christ, present in his own word, is proclaiming the Gospel. (GIRM #29) These words from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal set before us a profound truth that we need to ponder and make our own. The words of Sacred Scripture are unlike any other texts we will ever hear, for they not only give us information, they are the vehicle God uses to reveal himself to us, the means by which we come to know the depth of God s love for us and the responsibilities entailed by being Christ s followers, members of his Body. What is more, this Word of God proclaimed in the liturgy possesses a special sacramental power to bring about in us what it proclaims. The Word of God proclaimed at Mass is efficacious that is, it not only tells us of God and God s will for us, it also helps us to put that will of God into practice in our own lives. How, then, do we respond to this wonderful gift of God s Word? We respond in word and song, in posture and gesture, in silent meditation and, most important of all, by listening attentively to that Word as it is proclaimed. Following each reading we express our gratitude for this gift with the words Thanks be to God or, in the case of the Gospel, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, and it is appropriate that a brief period of silence be observed to allow for personal reflection. Following the first reading we sing the Responsorial Psalm, a meditation on God s word through the inspired words of one of the psalms from the psalter, the Bible s prayer book. The Gospel is the highpoint of the Liturgy of the Word. The readings from the Old Testament tell us of God s promises and his preparation of his people for the coming of his Son; the epistles and other pre-gospel New Testament readings offer the reflections of St. Paul and other contemporaries of the Lord on the life and message of Christ; in the Acts of the Apostles we have a history of the early Church. We believe that all Scripture, the Old and New Testaments, is inspired by the Holy Spirit, but the Church has always given special honor to the Gospel because in the Gospel we have not simply the preparation for and prefiguring of Christ, nor reflections on his message, but the words and deeds of Christ himself. The proclamation of the Gospel is surrounded with marks of respect and honor: the Gospel is read by an ordained minister, the deacon, or, when no deacon is present, by a priest; the Book of the Gospels is carried aloft with honor in the entrance procession and placed on the altar until the Gospel reading to show the unity of Scripture

7 Page Seven Fourth Sunday of Lent April 3, 2011 and Eucharist, of the table of the Word and the table of Christ s body and blood; just before the Gospel is read the Gospel book is carried in procession to the ambo to the accompaniment of an acclamation sung by the people; it may be incensed before the reading and is kissed at its conclusion; finally, all stand as the Gospel is proclaimed. Through this posture and through the honor paid to the book containing the Gospel, the Church pays homage to Christ who is present in his Word and who proclaims his Gospel. What then must we do to properly receive the Word of God proclaimed at Mass? The General Instruction tells us that all must listen with reverence to the readings from God s word. (GIRM #29) and it provides that those who read the Scriptures must be truly suited to perform this function and should receive careful preparation, so that the faithful by listening to the readings from the sacred texts may develop in their hearts a warm and living love for Sacred Scripture. (GIRM #101) The key word in all of this is listening. We are to listen attentively as the reader, deacon or priest proclaims God s Word. Unless one is able to hear, one should not be reading along with a text from a missal or missalette. Rather, taking our cue from the General Instruction itself, we should listen as we would if Christ himself were standing at the ambo, for in fact it is God who speaks when the Scriptures are proclaimed. Carefully following along with the printed word can cause us to miss the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit, the message that the Spirit may have for us in one of the passages because we are anxious to keep up, to move along with the reader. Perhaps the best way to understand the readings at Mass and our response to them is offered by Pope John Paul II in his Instruction Dies Domini. He encourages those who take part in the Eucharist, priest, ministers and faithful to prepare the Sunday liturgy, reflecting beforehand upon the Word of God which will be proclaimed and adds that if we do not, it is difficult for the liturgical proclamation of the Word of God alone to produce the fruit we might expect. (#40) In this way we till the soil, preparing our souls to receive the seeds to be planted by the Word of God so that seed may bear fruit. The Word of God, then, calls for our listening and our response in silent reflection, as well as in word and song. Most important of all, the Word of God, which is living and active, calls each of us individually and all of us together for a response that moves beyond the liturgy itself and affects our daily lives, leading us to engage fully in the task of making Christ known to the world by all that we do and say. ******************************************************************************************************************** PARISH LIFE SAINT ISAAC JOGUES WOMEN'S CLUB GUILD #7 GUILD NUMBER SEVEN WILL AGAIN BE SELLING PEPPER AND EGG SAND- WICHES EVERY FRIDAY OF LENT. The process for calling in names for the bulletin list is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month.
