2 Page Two Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 11, 2010 From the Pastor "TANABATA": A Bridge to Understanding There are few books in my library that I treasure more than We Japanese. It is actually a compendium of "placemats" from the hotel-spa Fujiya in Miyanoshita, Hakone, Japan. It is a simple, but brilliant, guide for tourists new to Japan s culture. We Japanese was first published in the 1930s with a comprehensive subtitle: Being descriptions of many of the customs, manners, ceremonies, Festivals, Arts and Crafts of the Japanese Besides Numerous Other Subjects given permission to marry. But all does not go well for the lovers. They are so totally absorbed in each other, that the princess neglects her weaving and the herder allows his cows to stray. The King of Heaven exiles the lovers to opposite sides of the "Milky Way." He allows them to meet only once a year! When the seventh day of the seventh month arrives, the princess and the cowherder must face each other on opposite shores of the Milky Way." Unfortunately, there is no bridge! The princess then weeps so bitterly that she stirs the sympathy of a blackbird. The bird assures her that he and his fellow magpies will form a bridge. With wings spread and touching, the birds create a bridge to unite the lovers. But, according to the legend, if it rains, the magpies will not form the "bridge and the lovers have to wait for a year for their reunion. I use We Japanese as a source for much of today's article. As fireworks lit the sky this past weekend, I remembered that there is a Japanese Summer Festival, Tanabata, that many identify with pyrotechnic displays. But there is more to Tanabata In popular culture, the Japanese set up bamboo trees in front of their houses or garden shrines. The trees are decorated with poems, origami kimonos or colored threads to honor Shokujo, the weaver, and Kengyu, the herder. Often the poems are more like "prayers of petition" that call upon the Weaver to improve weaving, arts, crafts and calligraphy and the Herder to insure a good harvest for the year. than fireworks. Japanese festivals (Matsuri), begin with a legend or myth that links natural phenomena with religious celebrations. Tanabata occurs on the eve of the seventh day of the seventh month. The natural phenomenon commemorated is the constellation of two stars, Veda and Altair. Legend has it that the stars are really lovers -- Shokujo, the celestial princess and weaver, and Kengyu, a humble cowherder. The Tanabata legend is charming, but what has it to do with you and me? Let us return to Japan for an answer. I found much in Japan that had a "message beyond nature and art. Nikko, the site of the Toshogu Shrine and stronghold of the Tokugawa Shogunate, makes a magnificent first impression. This is the story as the princess is weaving her father's royal garments, she catches sight of the handsome herder. They fall in love, and are actually

3 Page Three Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 11, 2010 The sacred Shinkyo Bridge spans the Daiyagawa River. It was thrilling to stand on that arched, vermillion bridge. For three centuries only shoguns and their emissaries were allowed to cross it. Even after more than 350 years, no "mere mortal can complete a crossing because of a barrier at one end. The Tanabata "bridge" was built out of compassion for separated lovers. The magpies symbolize how compassion is the surest bridge. The Shinkyo Bridge at Nikko reminds us that many barriers to the unity of different cultures are not so easily removed. But it also recalls the need for two shores to be united. East and West, Christian and Non-Christian, Old and New... again, isn t the surest "Bridge to Understanding one that is born of compassion and grows through mutual respect and interest? An unusual postscript: I purchased the book, We Japanese, at J Toguri Mecantile Company in Chicago. The lovely lady who sold it to me was someone I grew to respect and admire over the years. Her name was Iva Toguri D'Aquino. The world knew her as "Tokyo Rose! But that is another story. - Fr. Luczak Financial Update July marks the beginning of a new fiscal year for the Parish. We begin the new fiscal year with good news as Sunday s collection exceeded our budget target by $1,113. When compared to last year s figures collections were up year over year by $2,081. We wish to express our thanks to all parishioners who have given of their time, talent and treasure to support the Parish. We have a critical need for the following areas. Kitchen The kitchen sells comfort food for our patrons. We offer Sloppy Joes, Tuna Salad, Grilled Cheese and Hot Dogs along with fresh Pop Corn and candy bars. The Kitchen is open from 5:30 to approximately 7:30. Preparation begins between 4:00 and 4:30. We need two volunteers to man the kitchen each week. The goal is to have 8 to 12 individuals who would rotate responsibility. Bingo Games The doors for Bingo open at 5:30. Our goal is to have four teams each consisting of five to six workers. The teams are made up of a Leader who oversees operations; a Caller who runs each game; three Floor Walkers who sell Bingo cards and verify winning cards; and a Casher. We are extremely short of help in this area, particularly on the third week of each month. We need 10 to 12 volunteers to man this operation. For further details on any of these opportunities please contact the Parish Office at

4 Page Four Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 11, 2010 SPIRITUAL LIFE PETER S PENCE COLLECTION As a reminder the Peter s Pence collection will be taken up next weekend. Your generosity will be appreciated. EUCHARIST FOR PERSONS WITH CELIAC- SPRUE DISEASE The Liturgy Board has been made aware of low gluten hosts that are available for the faithful who have gluten intolerance. The low gluten breads meet the stipulations set forth by the Roman Catholic Church and are fully endorsed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat for Liturgy. Made from wheat starch and water, the gluten content of these breads is.01%, but it is still recommended that those who have Celiac consult with their physicians. Our question is: Do we have a need here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish to offer low gluten hosts? If yes, they will be purchased and the Liturgy Board will create a plan for distribution at Masses. If you or someone in your family is gluten intolerant and you would like to have low gluten hosts available at Mass, please contact Dee Stanton at 847/ or Julie Higgins at 847/ (evenings) by July 15 th. SUMMARY OF CATHOLICS COME HOME CHICAGO INITIATIVE For the next few weeks we will print paragraphs of a summary report provided in late May by the Office For Evangelization regarding the Catholics Come Home Chicago (CCHC) process. The Catholics Come Home evangelization initiative was a collaborative efforts among the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Dioceses of Joliet and Rockford. At the center of this initiative was a media buy for 2,000 television ads, viewed on 10 major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, WGN, Fox, Cable, Telemundo, Univision, PolVision, PolSat) during the seasons of Advent and Christmas. The viewing area for the ads covered 21 counties across the entire northern part of Illinois with the cost shared by all three dioceses ($850,000 from Chicago and $250,000 from each of the other two). This report reflects the information gathered from 201 Pastor Surveys and 239 Parish Contact Surveys. Also included is the February 2010 Mass Count conducted by the Office for Research and Planning. (St. Isaac Jogues Parish participated in these various surveys/counts.) Mass Count The Office for Research and Planning requested that parishes and missions take a special February count of Mass attendance. The count was done during the 3 rd and 4 th weekends of February, just after the start of Lent. The results are an average of the two-week totals. These results are compared to the October 2009 results and compare only those parishes that responded to the February count. In the February Mass Count 269 out of 367 parishes/missions, or 73%, responded to this special request. For those that reported, the count was 385,566. The October 2009 count for those same 269 parishes/missions was 356,640. This was an increase of 28,926 or 8.1%. While we are hearted by the increase at many parishes, we need to take into account that the data was collected during Lent, which typically sees an increase in Sunday Mass attendance. The best understanding of church attendance will be a comparison between October 2009 and October 2010 Mass Counts. I am energized by larger crowds in attendance at Mass, and I believe CCHC had that effect. Website To provide a means of communication to all 357 parishes there was a new home page for Catholics Come Home Chicago embedded in the Office for Evangelization website. The first phase of this website informed the parishes about CCHC and offered downloadable documents. Later the site was revised to address the needs of returning Catholics. The site will remain active and change with evangelization initiatives in the future. Web hits on the CCHC site went from 613 the week before the ads began airing to 3,238 for one week during the airing of the ads. (To be continued next week)

6 Page Six Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 11, 2010 HUMAN CONCERNS Are You at Risk for Falls? Falling presents a concern for our aging population those 65 or older. A spill can affect a person s overall well being & pose a threat to one s independence. Each year, nearly one third of US seniors fall & for one in ten of them the harm done will be serious & require hospital care. In fact, falls are No. 1 in causing injury deaths, nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for persons aged 65 and older. What puts a senior at risk? Certain medical conditions & sensory changes can make a fall more likely. These include arthritis & stroke, numbness in the feet, difficulty walking because of muscle weakness or balance problems, impaired sight or blindness. One s environment can be a factor. Clutter, poor lighting, scatter rugs, slippery floors/ stairs & pets can lead to falls. Using the wrong type or size walker, cane, etc. or using one improperly can put one at risk. Side effects from medication, not being active & alcohol use may contribute as well. Next week, I ll feature a questionnaire that will help seniors look at their risks for falling. Pat Kellen, Parish Nurse Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues Prayer Shawl Breakfast on July 15 Members of Wrapped in His Love, our Prayer Shawl Ministry, will gather in Room 6 on Thurs., July 15. We will start early at 9AM with a potluck breakfast & then continue our shawl making. To RSVP or if you have a question, call Pat at Ministry of Care Candidates Sought The need for Ministers of Care to bring Eucharist to homebound, hospitalized or confined parishioners is ongoing, yet the number of parishioners trained & available to do this work is decreasing. If you have an interest in ministering spiritually to the sick of our parish, please contact Pat Kellen at In Gratitude I am grateful for & overwhelmed by the love & support that I have received as a result of my Mother s death. I have been touched by the numerous cards, Masses, memorials, prayers, words of support & comfort that I/ we have received. I cannot adequately express how much this has meant to my family & me. A blessing to be found in our sadness is the outward manifestation of your care & concern. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Pat Kellen & Irv Plahm, Peg Albert & Bernadette Fitzgerald Just a reminder! The Nurse Is In Room 6 today (Sunday) from 8:30AM to 1:30PM.

What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. 9 Page Nine Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 11, 2010 It s Time How soon Can we know the truth That wisdom is better than the follies of youth That life is a constant change And that God is not out of range How long Do we have to suffer Before we all kill each other Turning the world upside down and around Running it like a devil s playground How many times Do we have to grieve Before we can truly believe Life after Death is a journey A trip where we can t bring our own money How high Can we aim to fly Without faith, without love standing by The world of sin is full of empty promises It can take away our soul when trouble arises How late in our life Do we want to start looking back To see if we re on the right track God s law is already in our mouth and heart It s best that we live it now and do our part How awesome it is then To serve the One most worthy of praise The One to whom angels gladly raise Their voices, their hearts with joy, singing Alleluia Praising God Almighty, Alleluia, Alleluia! (847) 823-HOPE www. hopeline.wordpress.com BLESSED KATERI TEKAKWITHA ( ) July 14 Though the New York State Thruway runs close by the North American Martyrs' Shrine, traffic's roar never pierces the peace enveloping Auriesville--Ossemon to Native Americans-in the lovely Mohawk Valley, where Kateri Tckakwitha was born barely ten years after the martyrdom of Isaac Jogues and his Jesuit and lay companions. Daughter of a Christian Algonquin mother and non-christian Mohawk chief, Kateri's parents died in a smallpox epidemic widely blamed on the missionaries. Moreover, many Native Americans had experienced exploitation at the hands of "Christian" traders and trappers, further discrediting the faith Kateri embraced in baptism, then pledged to live even more intensely in vowed virginity. Misunderstanding led to harassment, prompting her move to a Christian village farther north along the Saint Lawrence River. Despite this, Kateri's faith remained undaunted, her selfless charity undiminished. Both before and after her death at twenty-four, this young "Lily of the Mohawks" drew countless converts to Christ by the fragrance of her goodness. Through us, does "the aroma of Christ" {2 Corinthians 2: 15), attract others to the beauty of his gospel? - Peter Scagnelli,. Copyright, J. S. Paluch

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
