1 DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY March 30, 2008

2 Page Two Second Sunday of Easter March 30, 2008 HOLY WEEK AND EASTER The Great Week has come and gone, but, throughout the fifty day Easter Season the impact of the Paschal Mystery will continue to grow. As we anticipate Easter s fruition in the gifts of the Spirit at Pentecost, we can be grateful for what we have already shared through worship and service. I would like to thank all who made Lent, Holy Week and Easter so memorable and impressive the Liturgy Committee, the Arts and Environment Team, Dee Stanton and especially Lisa Hall, our Music Director, for her outstanding work with the parish choirs. To all the ministers and volunteers too many to mention I offer my sincere thanks. PRE-COUNCIL MEETING Since my arrival more than a year ago, I have perceived a need to re-form the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). Before that can be done, I need more information. Anyone who was a member of the PPC here is a valuable resource for the future. On Tuesday, April 29 at 7:00 PM in the Holy Family Room, there will be a Pre-Council meeting. I want the special input of former council members. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the council from its inception to its final meeting with Fr. Fialkowski? In this time of discernment, it is important to know facts before setting a timeline or concrete goals. This week, there will begin a three-part series on the essential nature of and Archdiocesan norms for a PPC. Fr. Luczak "WHAT A PARISH-PASTORAL COUNCIL IS AND WHAT IT IS NOT" In the 1970's, parish councils were few. As a deacon, in 1969, I had observed one of the first councils in the Archdiocese at Mary, Seat of Wisdom Parish, and was convinced every parish should have one. With the best intentions, I proposed that we begin the process of forming a council at St. Philomena's. The pastor and staff were very positive and supportive. I was optimistic because the parish was very progressive and had many hard-working groups. We arranged for a meeting of parish leaders, a guest speaker, and an evening to observe Mary, Seat of Wisdom's Council in action. What happened taught me more about obstacles to a parish council than it did about the "spirit" that gives one life.

3 Page Three Second Sunday of Easter March 30, 2008 Our guest speaker described representation, communication, and the advisory role of the parish council. With that, our parish leaders responded: "If a council is advisory, you mean that we can't make decisions... then, why bother?" "With all the meetings I have to attend, why add another one?" "Why not let the priests run things? I'm just a lay person." That evening did not go well. Nor did our evening observing the council at Mary. Seat of Wisdom. It was impressive, to be sure. Council members were articulate and persuasive. If I could find a word to describe the proceedings, it would be "professional." Unfortunately, Mary, Seat of Wisdom was too "professional" for St. Philomena's. What I heard from our group of observers was: "Oh, we could never do all that!" It had been an unfair comparison. In the end, a parish council was indefinitely postponed:"too little interest, too many obstacles, too few 'professionals'... " I begin with a "negative" to develop a positive view. The obstacles I have described are not immovable objects." What is a Parish Pastoral Council (PPC)? In the 1980's the Archdiocese of Chicago "renewed and revised" its expectations for a parish council. A PPC is a vehicle to nourish a spiritual vision of the Church in the modern world and to develop unity within the parish. It's a solid, non-threatening description that emphasizes a religious rather than a "political" matrix. From the onset, being CHURCH is at the heart of forming a PPC. The Church is a living mystery... a mystery that includes all baptized persons. The Church is essentially not a "thing" - an organization, a building, or a corporation. The Church is "people in structure." It is life shared and life extended to others. It reveals Christ's mystery and mission. Through Baptism, we are one with Christ's mystery. Through the Spirit, we are called to share Christ's mission. St. Paul reminds of our dignity and function in I Corinthians: 12: There are many gifts, but the same Spirit, there are different forms of service but the same Lord... to each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. St. Paul's "theology" supports responsible sharing in the life of the Church. As members of a "Mystical Body," we are called in different ways to proclaim the Word and incarnate the values and goals of the Kingdom in our lives. The Second Vatican Council says a great deal about the laity and the clergy sharing responsibility. In the Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, a collaborative ideal is set forth by the council fathers. The laity should develop the habit of working in the parish in close union with their priests, of

4 Page Four Second Sunday of Easter March 30, 2008 bringing before the ecclesial community their own problems and questions regarding salvation, to examine them together and solve them by general discussion. The "faith dimension" distinguishes a PPC from its secular counterparts. While the Church may share concerns, goals, resources, and technology with secular governments and political entities, its prime directives will always be God's plan and the guidance of the Spirit. In its collaborative interaction, a PPC ought to be different. The contrast with more familiar structures is of critical importance. A PPC is not a corporation or business. It is a "faith-community" united in and by Christ. A PPC is not a legislative body. It is advisory, helping the pastor develop a "mission statement" and the policies, procedures, and programs that accomplish the "mission" of the parish. A PPC is not governed by parliamentary procedure or majority vote. Its decisions require prayerful discernment and consensus. Preparation for a PPC, therefore, includes spiritual formation as well as group dynamics. Above all, an attitude of service and charity ought to motivate the members of a PPC. For, while members of the PPC may view their role as "empowerment," it should never degenerate into a struggle for power. PPC members are in a position of trust, a "partnership" with the pastor, who, in turn represents the Archbishop. Next week's article will present "Archdiocesan Norms for a Parish Pastoral Council." -Fr. Luczak Stewardship.Sunday Collections Weekly (this year) 3/23/08 $9, (last year) 3/20/07 $9, Jesus meets the need of each disciple. To the fearful in the upper room, He speaks words of peace. To doubting Thomas, He provides the tangible proof of His resurrection. What do I need to become His disciple? What do I have to share that might meet someone else s need?

Thank you! BOLIVIA MISSION TRIP Hello, my name is Colleen Winans and I am a nursing student in my last year at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. Along with my family I am a member of St. Isaac Jogues Parish. I attended Religious Education from 1 st -8 th grade and was an Altar Server throughout high school. I am fortunate to be one of 14 students chosen from the University to participate in a Joliet Diocese mission trip to Sucre, Bolivia June 9-June 23, The purpose of the Mission trip is to serve the children and youth of Sucre by working at several locations, including the Ta Ta Juan Dios Orphanage, the PSICO Hospital for handicapped children and the Martine Day Care Center, to name a few. At these locations we will be passing out food, clothing, school supplies and medical supplies. Our group will also be putting together a playground outside one of the orphanages. In the past, the Diocese of Joliet has built a 32-bed hospital that has been fully equipped to serve the poorest of the poor and has provided additions to two orphanages. The Joliet Diocesan Missions are a Faith Ministry. This means that there are no budgeted funds from the diocese to underwrite our expenses, which are considerable, amounting to $1900 per student. Some of the money is raised by our fundraising projects. However, additional funds are necessary. I am asking for your generous financial support. Any donation would be of great help and greatly appreciated. Checks can be made payable to St. Isaac Jogues. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to the Religious Education Office: St. Isaac Jogues RE Office c/o Mrs. Dee Stanton 8149 Golf Road Niles, IL It would be most helpful if donations were sent by April 20 th. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you, also, for your prayers for the success of this mission. God bless you and your family, Colleen Winans READINGS FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER (white) Acts 2:14, Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-11 I Peter 1:17-21 Luke 24:13-35 ABOUT NEXT WEEK S READINGS ACTS: None of the Scripture readings during the seven-week Easter season are from the Old Testament. 6 Page Six Second Sunday of Easter March 30, 2008 passages which the early Christians saw as fulfilled in Jesus. Today s reading gives part of Peter s sermon at the first Pentecost. Peter quotes from Psalm 16 which, like most of the Psalms, was popularly thought to be have been written by David. I PETER: The Christians for whom the first letter of Peter was written were recent converts from paganism. They found themselves a small minority in pagan surroundings. Their neighbors and local authorities made life miserable for them. Today s passage offers encouragement by reminding them that Jesus died and rose for them. 7 Page Seven Second Sunday of Easter March 30, 2008 MORE APC NEWS A MAJOR APC ACCOMPLISHMENT Most recently, through dialogue sessions in the deaneries, the APC passed a proposal that priests give more time to catechesis at Mass, since people often do not have time to attend catechetical sessions and consequently need some instruction in their faith. Six topics a year were suggested and these topics could be coordinated with the Scriptural Readings for given Sundays. The proposal was also endorsed the Priests Council and catechesis is being prepared for the time immediately following Easter this year. The six topics: The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, Mary, Marriage, Reconciliation and Immigration. The Office for Evangelization in the archdiocese is preparing materials for this input. The St. Isaac Jogues Men s Club annual trip to Horseshoe Casino in Indiana has been changed to April 23. The cost is $10.00 per person. A voucher is included for the Casino deli or cafeteria. The bus will leave at 6:30 PM sharp and return shortly after 11:00 PM. All parishioners and friends are invited. Come and try your luck. Call Russ DiPrima at or any member of the Men s Club if interested for further information. KNOWLEDGE CAN LEAD TO NEW WISDOM Most parishioners are not aware of the large consultative process that is in place in the Church of Chicago. It is hoped that this article will illuminate parishioners of how their concerns are addressed and encourage parishioners to step forward and to serve on their local parish councils and deanery councils.

Recently, third graders have been reading the chapter book, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. They have been learning many new vocabulary words such as sedentary, repulsive, miraculous and salutations. Students are learning how to answer comprehension questions with proof from the novel as well as how to sequence the events of a larger text. These skills and many more are just a few: of the activities occupying students as they learn about life on a farm for a young girl named Fern and Wilbur's fight for survival There has been laughter and tears shed as third graders continue to get tangled in the friendship of Charlotte and Wilbur. Upon completion of the novel each student will submit a book report for the story and share their favorite part through a drawing. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
