1 SAINT ISAAC JOGUES PARISH 8149 Golf Road ~ Niles, IL / ~ Fax # 847/ Website: It was AWESOME! I was in AWE at the outpouring of love on the occasion of the celebration of my golden jubilee as a priest. The words, thank you, seem very weak at this time, but they are the best that I can garner. They are heart-felt and addressed to each and every one of you. May the ever generous God in whose image and likeness you have been created, redeemed and sanctified be with you always and reward you abundantly for your goodness. Peace and Good! fr. cam, a grateful franciscan jubilarian The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2010

2 Page Two Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2010 From the Pastor CARNIVAL SPIRITUALITY? Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that exist, and make use of the creation to the full as in youth. - Wisdom 2: 6 Lent is ten days away. If we lived in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, or Venice, we could not escape the hijinks and merriment of Mardi Gras the invasive, seductive, and pervasive spirit of Carnival. The spirit of Carnival? How could a celebration so wedded to the world and the flesh have anything to do with the spirit? Scholars in their detached way, like to analyze folkways. Carnival is no exception. At least one scholar, J.C. Cooper, tells us: Carnival represents the re-entry into chaos, a reversal of all natural order, celebrated especially at the time of the winter solstice and the new year it is also a feature of spring and May Day ferti1ity cults and of Mardi Gras in Christian countries. Because of the helter-skelter atmosphere, Carnival embraces license and disorder. The Trickster element emerges from the chaos. Joseph Campbell, a renowned expert on myth, explains: In the carnival customs of Europe this figure survives in numerous clowns, buffoons, devils, Punchinellas and imps who play roles, precisely, of the Indian Pueblos and give the character of topsy-turvy to the feast. There is something exotic and exaggerated about Carnival. There is a loss of ordinary identity. There is the mask. There is pretense. There is the hauteur of fancy dress and the shock of indecent exposure. But W. H. Auden saw something more substantial. Carnival celebrates the unity of our human race as mortal creatures, who come into this world and depart from it without our consent... Our feelings about this are ambiguous. To us as individuals, it is a cause for rejoicing that we are not alone Does Auden s insight bring us closer to reconciling the "spirit" with the manifest carnality of Carnival? Perhaps. In the late 1960s, an Anglican priest, Fr. Robert Farrar Capon, wrote a delightful book called The Supper of the Lamb. Fr. Capon, among his recipes and clever comments, composed a prayer that comes very close to the "spirit" of Carnival (if one exists). I will conclude this year s salute to Carnival with Fr. Capon's prayer. O Lord refresh our sensibilities. Give us this day our daily taste. Restore to us soups that spoons will not sink in, and sauces which are never the same twice. Raise up among us stews with more gravy than we have bread to blot it with and casseroles that put starch and substance in our limp modernity. Take away our fear of fat, and make us glad of the oil which ran upon Aaron s beard. Give us pasta with a hundred fillings, and rice in a thousand variations. Above all, give us grace to live as true folk to fast till we come to a refreshed sense of what we have and then to dine gratefully on all that comes to hand. Drive far from us, O Most Bountiful, all creatures of air and darkness; cast out the demons that possess us; deliver us from the fear of calories and the bondage of nutrition; and set us free once more in our own land where we shall serve thee as thou hast blessed us with the dew of heaven, the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Let the good times roll!) Fr. Luczak

3 Page Three Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal 2010 They Left Everything... We are asked to share Something The Apostles gave up everything to follow Jesus. You are not asked to do that much! Rather, you are asked to make a commitment to Annual Catholic Appeal. While funding a number of Archdiocesan ministries, the Annual Catholic Appeal is also the largest philanthropic source of financial support for ALL of the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift, payable over five months. We hope you have reviewed the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Now please reflect on God's gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to offer needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $ 37, is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds comeback to our parish to help to fund our own needs. This is commitment weekend for the Annual Catholic Appeal. At Mass, you will hear a recorded homily by Cardinal George. Afterwards, all will be asked to fill out a pledge card and the ushers will collect them. Please be generous to this year s appeal. Thank you your generosity in the past. Let me conclude with an inspiring quote from the late Thomas Merton: To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything He has given us -- and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him. Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference. - Fr. Luczak

5 Page Five Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2010 MISSION TRIP SUPPORT Christopher Dexter is a Freshman at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and is participating in a service trip to New Orleans during Holy Week (March 30-April 3) through the college s Campus Ministry. They will be working with the St. Bernard Foundation to help rebuild houses that are still ruined from Hurricane Katrina. Chris and his family are parishioners for many years and active in various liturgical ministries. Chris writes, I am participating in this trip because I have always wanted to do something like this. It brings happiness to me when I help other people especially in this kind of way. This ties in with my faith because it is what I believe in and what I believe all Catholics should do. I hope that I will become a stronger Catholic because of this trip and that I learn what it is like to have this kind of disaster happen to a person. Your prayerful support of Chris and this mission trip will be appreciated. If you would also like to support him with a monetary donation (for travel and supplies), please send it to Dee Stanton at the Religious Education Office, 8149 Golf Road, Niles by February 10 th. Checks should be made payable to St. Isaac Jogues Parish and we will then give Chris one total check. Thank you for your consideration and continued encouragement of our young adults as they serve others. Today s passage follows directly from that, as Paul addresses concerns about our own resurrection. EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION *Confirmation Yr. Human Concerns Commission Meetings Anyone with an interest in social justice or who is a member of Hopeline, Ministry of Care, St. Vincent de Paul, or another Human Concerns organization is invited to the Human Concerns Commission (HCC) meeting Tues., Feb. 9 at 7PM in the Holy Family Room. The role of HCC is to increase parishioner awareness of social justice issues, support the efforts of member organizations & spearhead other initiatives. For further information or to express your interest in HCC, please contact Pat Kellen at Come Walk with Us All are invited to the Labyrinth Walk Fri., Feb 19 from 8:30AM to 8:30PM in the Holy Family Room. The displayed canvas is a replica of the design found on the floor of Chartres Cathedral. In Medieval times, pilgrims, unable to venture to the Holy Land to follow Christ s path, paced instead the circuit set in stone. Walking it symbolized their spiritual journey to Jerusalem. Today, modern pilgrims walk labyrinths to meditate, pray, find release, discover answers, or connect with God. The journey offers an occasion to slow down & move to a deeper place within. Ministers of Care will be on hand to guide you. Only stocking feet or protected shoes are allowed on the canvas. For those who need to wear shoes, coverings will be provided. If you have questions, please call Pat Kellen at Spend some time in movement & prayer. Discover a spiritual tool that can enhance your Lenten journey. February is American Heart Month This annual National Health Observance offers us 28 days in which to learn about heart & circulatory health diseases affecting the heart & blood vessels, risks for developing one & actions you can take to lower chances or control a disorder. Learning your risks can be as simple as a blood test, BMI calculation, blood pressure or waist measurement. A blood test can reveal total cholesterol (<200), LDL ( bad cholesterol; < 100), HDL (the good one; > 60), & triglycerides (< 150). Using your height & weight on a BMI chart, you can find your number; < 25 is best. With a tape measure, you can see if your waist circumference is < 35 (ladies) or < 40 (men). A blood pressure check can show if your reading is < 120/80. Also available are vascular screenings done by such organizations as LifeLine. Tests can reveal the presence or absence of an aortic aneurysm, blockage of the carotid arteries in the neck & narrowing of the veins in the legs. Other risks exist. Read more next week! 7 Page Seven Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2010 HUMAN CONCERNS 2011 The 2011 Mass Book will be opening on Thursday, February 18, Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. PARISH LIFE COMMISSION The Parish Life Commission will meet on Thursday, February 11 th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. ST. JOSEPH TABLE Promises of food and help, as well as monetary donations for the preparation of the St. Joseph Table continue to be given and we are very grateful. This special event will soon be here and we hope everyone will come and share at the Table! The Saint Joseph Table gives glory to God, honors St. Joseph and assists those in need. This beautiful tradition, which began centuries ago in Italy as an expression of gratitude for the intercession and help of St. Joseph in a time of crisis, is Sunday, March 7 th, beginning with the Noon Mass. The Saint Joseph Table will be blessed after the 5 p.m. Mass on March 6 th, followed by the serving of sweets and coffee, and after the Noon Mass on March 7 th, followed by the serving of traditional foods, 1:30-4:30 p.m. There is no cost to eat, but donations received that day will be given to our St. Vincent DePaul Society to help those in need. If you have not yet had a chance to contact us about donating food, money or time for the preparation of the St. Joseph Table, we encourage you to stop in the Holy Family Room to sign up or call one of the following people this week. Visits to the Blessed Sacrament and Eucharistic Benediction were the secret yearnings of the saints. St. Catherine of Genoa said, "The time I have spent before the tabernacle is the best time of my life." The saints knew where Jesus was, and they desired no more than the privilege of keeping inseparable watch with Him, both in their affections and by their bodily presence before the Blessed Sacrament. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
