THE MEANING OF THE COAT OF ARMS THE PARISH COAT OF ARMS I have been interested in heraldry for many years. Coats of Arms identify persons, cities, states, and nations. They may be secular or religious. They may signify hereditary connections or even tell a story to illustrate the virtues and life of a patron saint. We are familiar with the personal arms of popes, bishops, and archbishops. Priests, and deacons are also permitted to have coats of arms, and so may churches, colleges, and seminaries. Several months ago, on EWTN Live, Fr. Mitch Pacwa interviewed James-Charles Noonan. Mr. Noonan is a world-renowned Church historian and ecclesiastical protocolist. He has published many books on the subject, including The Church Visible: The Ceremonial Life and Protocol of the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Noonan holds academic degrees from Catholic University of America, The Gregorian University in Rome, Charles Borromeo Seminary and LaSalle University (Philadelphia). He holds nine orders of knighthood from heads of state, royalty, and the Vatican. An expert in ecclesial heraldry, Mr. Noonan was trained by Archbishop Bruno Heim, the private secretary of Pope John XXIII whose arms he designed as well as those of Popes Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II. Recognized as the leading Catholic heraldist today, James-Charles Noonan was the logical choice for a project that I had envisioned since I arrived at St. Isaac Jogues Parish- -an official parish coat of arms. I contacted Mr. Noonan after viewing EWTN Live. The process of planning and drafting a design took The Supporter or figure to the left of the shield is an image of St. Isaac Jogues with his arm outstretched, holding a cross. He wears a Jesuit cassock with a traveler s cloak. The cloak is lined in red to represent martyrdom. The Chief or upper part of the shield is a deep blue, the color of the Blessed Virgin and symbol of Philosophy. It represents St. Isaac s teaching role as a pastor. On the field of blue are two silver crescents that recall Our Lady s title, the Immaculate Conception. The two crescents represent Mary as Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church. On the base of the shield is a sailing ship on a field of gold. The ship, like the one that brought St. Isaac to the New World, has a blue fleur de lys on its main sail. It recalls both the Blessed Virgin and the coat of arms of Orleans, the birthplace of St. Isaac Jogues. The firey sea below the ship symbolizes martyrdom in general and St. Isaac s escape from being burned at the stake. USES FOR THE ARMS OF ST. ISAAC The new coat of arms will be placed on our electrified sign very soon. An enlargement of Mr. Noonan s painting will be framed and hung in the Holy Family Room. The coat of arms will appear on church stationery and eventually even on tee shirts, coffee mugs, etc. Finally, allow me to say that our new coat of arms is my personal gift to the people of St. Isaac Jogues. I have underwritten the whole project. May St. Isaac Jogues Parish continue to thrive under St. Isaac s holy patronage. Fr. Luczak

One was Philip. Today we find him in Samaria, about 60 miles north of Jerusalem, fearlessly proclaiming the good news of Jesus and experiencing astounding results. I PETER: The First Letter of Peter was written to Christians whose pagan neighbors continually questioned and ridiculed them about their faith. Since most of the Christians were lowborn or slaves, their opponents couldn t understand why they were so joyful and hopeful. Today s passage offers pastoral advice and encouragement. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS *On Monday, April 21 st --Autobiographies for Confirmation Year I Candidates are due. Confirmation Year II Candidates will have final interviews with staff members and then music practice with Ms. Hall. Please arrive to class on time! *Confirmation practice will be on Thursday, April 24 th, 6:30-8:00 p.m. in Church. All Confirmation Year II Candidates are to attend. Sponsors are welcome but it is not mandatory they come. Students with reading parts should bring them. *The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred upon 39 youth and young adults of the parish next Sunday, April 27 th, during a 3:00 p.m. Mass in Church. A reception, hosted by the Confirmation Year I families, will follow in the Holy Family Room. Our faith community is happy to welcome Bishop George Rassas, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, who will administer the sacrament. Please pray for our young people as they near the completion of their initiation yet continue to live their discipleship in Christ each day! *First Communion Practice for those participating in the May 3 group celebration will be on Thursday, May 1 st, 6:30-8:00 p.m. in Church. At least one adult family member is to attend the entire practice with their child.

An Ethical Will concerns the sharing of a person s values, beliefs, and life lessons with those who will survive them. It is not a legal document that deals with material possessions. The workshop will help interested parties learn the various approaches for recording their important personal information. 5 Page Five Fifth Sunday of Easter April 20, 2008 Rainbow Hospice Volunteer Training & Gifts of Grief Offering Rainbow Hospice is seeking caring and compassionate persons with an interest in developing the skills needed to assist patients facing the end of life and their families. Volunteers would be trained to meet the needs of these people in a home, long term care facility or inpatient hospice setting. The next training begins April 26 and will held both Saturday April 26 and May 3, 2008 from 9AM to 3PM and Wednesday, April 30 from 6-9PM at their Park Ridge offices, 444 N. Northwest Hwy. For information or to register, please call ******************************************************************************** Gastro-Intestinal Health Part 2 Lifestyle Tips for Calming Nighttime Heartburn So what s a body to do if you re plagued by heartburn at night? Short of over-the-counter or prescription remedies, changes in behavior can go a long way to afford you some quality shut eye! During the day: After eating, try not to bend over. Pressure exerted on the abdomen can increase symptoms. Drinking plenty of water, in small amounts, can aid digestion. Large volumes, though, increase the contents of the stomach and potentially aggravate symptoms. Regular exercise also can help digestion. It s best, though, to avoid jarring types of activities and to do your routine at least two hours after eating. At bedtime: Don t go to bed for two to three hours after eating. Between the full stomach and reclining position, the pressure to bear on the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) could cause reflux. Before retiring, try chewing gum. Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which dilutes and flushes out stomach acid. In fact, saliva can actually neutralize stomach acid. (1) Wear loose-fitting pajamas. Those binding the abdomen (waistbands/ belts) squeeze the stomach, exerting pressure on the LES and causing reflux into the esophagus.

6 Page Six Fifth Sunday of Easter April 20, Check your position. If you lay flat, what s in your tummy at bedtime will press against the LES. Instead, sleep with your head and shoulders elevated so gravity will work to keep stomach contents where they belong. It s also recommended that you sleep on your left side as studies have shown that this position aids digestion and helps with the removal of stomach acid. Apparently, sleeping on the right side has been shown to worsen heartburn. (1) Consider these: Don t smoke. Nicotine reportedly can damage the LES. The habit also fuels stomach acid prod uction Don t drink alcohol. Alcohol relaxes the LES and boosts stomach acid creation. Shed some pounds. The pressure of excess weight can increase the chance stomach acid will backup into your esophagus. (1) Get a handle on stress. It can lead to more stomach acid and impact healthy choices that can trigger heartburn, such as overeating. (1) If you take medications over-the-counter or otherwise, check to see if any might cause or aggravate heartburn. Ask your doctor or pharmacist. 8 Page Eight Fifth Sunday of Easter April 20, 2008 Volunteers can help spread a little sweetness during the annual Misericordia/Jelly Belly Candy Days on Friday April 25th and Saturday, April 26th. Home to more than 550 children and adults with mental and physical disabilities, Misericordia offers lives of challenge and dignity to this very deserving population. Armed with candy and tags, volunteers can be seen on the streets of Chicago and suburbs collecting donations on behalf of Misericordia. One hundred percent of proceeds raised will positively affect the residents, who are persons of diverse religious, ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds. To volunteer or for more information, please call Tessa The St. Isaac Jogues Men s Club annual trip to Horseshoe Casino in Indiana has been changed to April 23. The cost is $10.00 per person. Celebrating Chinese Culture Celebrating the Chinese New Year at St. John Brebeuf School was definitely a positive way to counter the gray days of winter! Students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 worked together to create a red and gold environment of Chinese culture. The fifth grade students focused on pandas, fortune cookies, and Chinese writing. The sixth graders added two walls of the Great Wall of China, complete with "graffiti facts." They also studied and built their own personal abacus in math class. The seventh grade researched and created artistic fans embellished with flowers and Chinese proverbs, while in the classroom they studied the math properties of tangrams. Forty-one red and gold "'lanterns of knowledge" created by the eighth grade students hung in two columns down the upper grade hall. Each lantern displayed facts, pictures, and the Chinese characters for one aspect of the culture ranging from music to science, food to festivals. Eighth graders also worked in teams to create numerous ceremonial dragons to greet visitors to the hallway. As one student said, "'As you turned the comer you felt like you were entering a new world!" The St. John Brebeuf Student Council joined in the celebration by donating fortune cookies for the entire student body to end the Chinese New Year.

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
