2 Page Two The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 10, 2012 CORPUS CHRISTI Mystery, Miracle and Witness Reliquary of the Holy Corporal of Bolsena, Orvieto, Italy Eucharist a mystery great and inexhaustible. - Pope Paul VI Father Robert Barron, best known for his splendid series, Catholicism, has credentials as both an academic and pastoral theologian. He has made his mark in the media, but is also the author of many articles and books. Among his written works is Eucharist, published in Eucharist is part of a larger project -- Catholic Spirituality for Adults. The book is readable and in no way, dumbed down. I especially enjoyed Fr. Barron s reflections on the Eucharistic implications of the film, Babette s Feast. I was delighted too that Fr. Barron recounts author Flannery O Connor s blunt, but beautiful, faith in the Real Presence. She had been invited to a dinner party hosted by Mary McCarthy for local literati. At the time, Flannery had great talent, but little celebrity. She described her feelings: Having me there was like having a dog present who had been trained to say a few words but overcome with inadequacy, had forgotten them. Mary McCarthy, a lapsed Catholic with what could be called condescending tolerance, described the Eucharist as a symbol and a pretty good one. It was intended to give a polite nod to Flannery O Connor s credal commitment and religious practice. Among all those beautiful people, Flannery O Connor seemed mousey, but her retort to Mary McCarthy was no squeak. It was a roar. Flannery, in a shaky voice, fired a shot that ought to be heard today by Catholics compromised by culture or lost in spiritual quicksand: Well, if it s only a symbol, to hell with it. I would like to have seen the reaction of the guests at Mary McCarthy s dinner party! Of course, the devaluation of the Eucharist is nothing new. When there is a giant challenge to faith, some will dive right in -- the way Flannery O Connor, Chesterton, or St. Thomas Aquinas did. Others -- like Medieval heretics and Protestant reformers -- will reject and redefine what they cannot comprehend. Still others will be suspended between believing and doubting. This final group remains officially Catholic either with a cafeteria or a sweet table attitude toward doctrine and discipline. The Solemnity of Corpus Christi celebrates the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Historically, the ancient Church Fathers often expressed their faith in the Real Presence, but not with the philosophic precision that would develop in the Middle Ages. That precision led to brilliant insights that illuminated the faith. But, in the hands of doubting, critical academics, it clouded and distorted the vision of faith. As a prelude to Corpus Christi and the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas, there were two phenomena that greatly influenced the Church -- new scholarship and various forms of religious experience. Fr. Barron provides an overview of the philosophical problems that have sometimes beset the faithful. Is it truly the Body and Blood of Christ or not? Medieval mystics prayerfully reflected on the Eucharist. Others, like St. Julianna of Mt. Cornillon, actually envisioned a festival that would emphasize the Real Presence. Reports of miracles shaped popular piety and intensified Eucharistic devotion. None of these had greater influence than a miracle at Bolsena in A priest, Peter of Prague, who was in every other respect, pious and dutiful, began to doubt that Christ was actually present in the consecrated host. He was on a pilgrimage and, while celebrating Mass at the tomb of St. Christina in Bolsena, a strange and shocking thing happened. After he enunciated the words of (cont. pg 3)

The blood ran down his hands and onto the altar and corporal. Confused and greatly disturbed, he first tried to conceal the phenomena. Then he asked to be taken to neighboring Orvieto to see Pope Urban IV who had taken up residence there. The Pope, who already had strong convictions about the Real Presence, listened to Fr. Peter. He believed his story and strengthened the priest s conviction. The Pope ordered that the sacred host and corporal be brought to Orvieto. Since 1263, the miraculous corporal has been enshrined and venerated at Orvieto Cathedral. In 1264, after he had commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas to compose the proper for a Mass and Office honoring the Eucharist, Pope Urban IV instituted the actual Feast of Corpus Christi. Today, we recognize that the Eucharist is, in itself, Miracle and Mystery. It is immeasurably more than a symbol. It is a Vital Sign that God is with us and we are with God. That is why, like Flannery O Connor, we should be bold in our witness of Faith! - Fr. Luczak HELP A READER BLOSSOM! According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. ALTAR FLOWERS CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE Parishioners are invited to decorate the altar with flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. There will be two arrangements each week. This musical is unlike any you have seen before. It is deeply spiritual and moving, while bringing life and humor and beauty to the words of the Gospel of Mark through music. There is no cost to attend the performance. An offering will be taken up after the show to benefit Mercy Home in Chicago. All professional musicians are donating their time to this worthy cause. 7 Page Seven The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 10, 2012 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION *Families who have a tuition balance or sacrament fee remaining for this current year are asked to send their payment in the first two weeks of June or, if you have a financial concern, to please call Dolores Stanton, 847/ , to discuss some options. Our fiscal year closes at the end of June and we need to prepare for it. *Registration for the RE Program has begun! Returning families are to have the registration form received in the mail to the Religious Education Office by this Friday, June 15, in order to avoid a late fee. Families who are new to the program should contact the RE Office, 847/ , to set up a time to pick up or fill out paperwork. A copy of each child s baptismal certificate will be needed (if the child was not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish.) Tuition for for parishioners (those registered in the parish and who use their envelopes and/or give time to the parish through a ministry) is: $160 one child; $270 two children; $330 three or more children. Tuition for non-parishioners (those not registered in the parish, or who are registered but do not use their envelopes or give time) is: $240 one child; $350 two children; $410 three or more children. Sacrament fees are: First Reconciliation/First Communion -- $50; Confirmation Year I -- $10; Confirmation Year II -- $30. Please note that no one is denied religious education because of a difficulty with finances. RE Classes for Kindergarten are on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Grades 1-Confirmation Year II meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children attend each year as no one year fully covers and forms a child s faith development. Please note that a child must participate in religious education classes, either through an RE Program or a Catholic School, the two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families with older children who have not yet received religious education or sacraments or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call us to discuss options available. 9 Page Nine The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 10, 2012 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A new name for this feast, long known as Corpus Christi or Body of Christ, points to an important recovery of Communion from the shared chalice, the Precious Blood, in the Roman Catholic liturgy. For many centuries, only the priest received from the chalice. Now, over the last forty years, the cup has been offered more frequently to the faithful. Sadly, perhaps because it is not offered at all Masses, or because people are free to pass by the offered cup, it can be seen by some as a take it or leave it option. Some important meanings surface, however, when we drink from the common cup, such as our desire to participate in the pouring out of Christ s love. Bread is the staff of life, eaten by necessity even in times of pain. Wine, on the other hand, is the mark of festivity, a pledge of joy, a sign of unity between our altar table and the banquet feast of heaven. The center of the Gospel today is Jesus speaking of the pouring out of his blood, and his offer of a cup of blessing to be shared as a sign of his love. There is no better response than to take and drink, and no better way to mark this feast. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
