2 Page Two The Most Holy Trinity June 3, 2012 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY: Can You Picture It? I have just begun to read Raniero Cantalamessa s Contemplating the Trinity. It was a Christmas gift I saved -- or did I simply put it away? Contemplating the Trinity seems presumptuous. It reminds me too of the biggest disappointment of my Seminary curriculum. Theology of God -- De Deo, Uno et Trino -- should have been profound. Taught by a skillful professor it would have been. Unfortunately, we had Fr. Cloudcover (not his real name.) Fr. C. was so dull that when he opened his mouth you expected dust to come out! The Trinity, for him and other erudite collectors of copious footnotes, was a puzzle to play with. Before there was a Rubick s Cude, dull theologians probably had the Picayune Pyramid. Its function would have been to make mystery mystifying and the ineffable incomprehensible! When I began Fr. Cantalamessa s book on the Holy Trinity, I was relieved that he was not playing pyramid. Quite the contrary. He tells the story of Blessed Angela of Foligno and her confessor. Blessed Angela, who was a mystic, was convinced that the more we know of God, the less we can speak of Him. Her confessor kept insisting that she explain what she had experienced of God. In response, she said: Would that when you go to preach, you could understand, as I understand For then you would be absolutely unable to say anything about God and thus if you had attained this state, you would then say to the people Go with God, because about God I can say nothing. And then he would leave the pulpit in silence. Fr. Cantalamessa does not espouse an ignorance is bliss theology. For most of his priesthood he taught at the Catholic University of Milan. His experience with charismatic renewal led him to resign his academic post and become a a full time preacher of the Gospel. In 1980, Pope John Paul II appointed him preacher to the papal household. It is an honor he continues to have under the present pope, Benedict XVI. Most of his preaching takes place weekly during Advent and Lent. One must not think of Fr. Cantalamessa s message as simplistic or anti-intellectual. Even if the papal household may nod or doze off, we can be certain that the Holy Father would help to fill in any gaps. But if Fr. Cantalamessa s preaching is like his writings, I doubt that anyone could be put to sleep. The impact is more of an awakening! If Fr. Cantalamessa s book on the Trinity reminds me of another book, it is Henry Nouwen s The Beauty of the Lord. Like Nouwen s inspired use of icons, Fr. Cantalamessa includes four famous works of art. They are not exactly pictures of the Trinity, but they are mirrors of revelation. Artistic imagination interprets and is inspired by the Word. This is incarnational. Inspired by prayerful contemplation, and it invites contemplation. Fr. Cantalmessa spends a good deal of time with Andrei Kublev s icon of the Trinity (from Genesis 18). I wrote an article on this icon in 2006 and have printed other commentaries on it. Representations of the Trinity in Western Art, like Masaccio s in the Florentine Church of Santa Maria Novella, show a different emphasis. Like icons of the East, revelation and salvation history are portrayed. In Masaccio and countless others, the focus of the Trinity is on Calvary. The Father and the Spirit are part of the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus. This image is often referred to as the Throne of Grace. The life and love of the Trinity is instantly relevant to the human condition: God is with people in their suffering. God is not unfeeling; in a mysterious way he suffers for human beings and with them: God the Father suffers the suffering of love.

The relation of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit dynamically transform the Passion into the Resurrection. In Dominum et vivificantum, Pope John Paul II speaks of the suffering of God and the redemption: In a word, this inscrutable and undescribable fatherly pain will bring about all the wonderful economy of redemptive love in Jesus Christ, so that through the mystery of piety love can reveal itself in the history of man as stronger than sin. So that the gift may prevail! If there can be accurate pictures of the Trinity, they are meant to show the dynamic mission of the Godhead the Trinity united in the Mysteries of Christ. Fr. Cantalamessa presents contemplation of the Trinity as The Path to the Abundant Christian Life. That is his subtitle and an accurate description of his rich, yet humble approach to God. - Fr. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: We will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. ALTAR FLOWERS CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE Parishioners are invited to decorate the altar with flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. There will be two arrangements each week. 4 Page Four The Most Holy Trinity June 3, 2012 CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION SPIRITUAL LIFE The Corpus Christi Procession will begin at the end of the Noon Mass next Sunday, June 10 th. Scripture readings, hymns, and prayers will be offered in Polish, Italian, Spanish and Tagalog. Our Sharing Parish, Maternity BVM, will again join us for this special event. All are welcome so please invite your family, friends, and neighbors! Weather permitting, we will process from the church to the field over by the rectory where the four altars will be set up. If the weather is good, but the ground is wet from previous days rain, the altars will be set up around the property. Parts of the parking lot may be blocked off that day for set up and for the safety of all during the procession. The back road gate will be closed at 12:15 p.m. Parking will be available at Colonial Funeral Home. If you do not plan on staying for the procession, you may want to park over there. Once the procession begins, you will not be able to move your car from our parking lot until the procession has safely moved to the field or the first altar if we are going around the property. Ushers will be in the parking lot to facilitate movement. Please follow their direction. Please pray that the weather cooperates, but if it should not, we will have the procession inside with the altars set up in the Holy Family Room and the school. Hospitality will follow the event. If you would like to bring food to share, please drop it off in the Holy Family Room before the Noon Mass (but no earlier than 11:30 a.m.) We would also appreciate help with serving the food and with clean up outside and in the Holy Family Room. Any children of the parish who received their First Communion this year are encouraged to wear their First Communion clothes and help throw flower petals in front of the Blessed Sacrament during the procession. 6 Page Six The Most Holy Trinity June 3, 2012 RE NEWS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION *Families who have a tuition balance or sacrament fee remaining for this current year are asked to send their payment in the first two weeks of June or, if you have a financial concern, to please call Dolores Stanton, 847/ , to discuss some options. Our fiscal year closes at the end of June and we need to prepare for it. *Registration for the RE Program has begun! Returning families are to return the registration form received in the mail to the Religious Education Office by June 15 in order to avoid a late fee. Families who are new to the program should contact the RE Office, 847/ , to set up a time to pick up or fill out paperwork. A copy of each child s baptismal certificate will be needed (if the child was not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish). Tuition for for parishioners (those registered in the parish and who use their envelopes and/or give time to the parish through a ministry) is: $160 one child; $270 two children; $330 three or more children. Tuition for non-parishioners (those not registered in the parish, or who are registered but do not use their envelopes or give time) is: $240 one child; $350 two children; $410 three or more children. Sacrament fees are: First Reconciliation/First Communion -- $50; Confirmation Year I -- $10; Confirmation Year II -- $30. Please note that no one is denied religious education because of a difficulty with finances. RE Classes for Kindergarten are on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Grades 1-Confirmation Year II meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children attend each year as no one year fully covers and forms a child s faith development. Please note that a child must participate in religious education classes, either through an RE Program or a Catholic School, the two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families with older children who have not yet received religious education or sacraments or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call us to discuss options available. For more information please call TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Even though the Easter season has drawn to a close, today s feast still basks in the glow of Easter s twilight. To believe that we are made in the image and likeness of God a God whose inner life is described in terms of community is to recognize that we are in relationship with one another. In the language of the liturgy, we do not each stand alone before God, but constantly affirm this truth in the very words of our prayers. We believe, we offer, we ask you, we say, or have mercy on us, hear us, listen to our prayer, and in preparation for Communion, we pray the perfect prayer to Our Father. To be baptized is to enter into the life of a community of faith. Nowhere is this sense of community more focused than at Sunday Mass, when we respond to the love of the Father by being together in Christ, embraced by the Spirit, for the sake of the world. Today has been called an idea feast, and impossible to grasp fully. Yet, as the readings today explore, the Trinity is not a concept traced like a triangle on a blackboard. It is the air we breathe, the sign we trace on our bodies as a pledge and promise of God s love.

For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
