Page Two Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7, 2013 Ecumenical Dialogue in Progress St. Isaac Jogues Ecumenical Committee has spent much time reflecting on documents that encourage dialogue and cooperation among Christians. Because of that, the committee is well motivated. For two years there has been a prayer initiative during the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan ). St. Isaac Jogues has written other Christian parishes in our area and pledged prayers for their needs. The prayer initiative is an outreach that recognizes a Christian fellowship that already exists as well as the desire for greater unity. Thanks to the efforts of two members, in particular, we now have a solid base for dialogue with two Lutheran parishes, Messiah Lutheran in Park Ridge and Holy Trinity Lutheran in Glenview. Both pastors, Rev. Lynne Morrow and Rev. Robin Brown, have responded with openness and genuine interest. Rev. Morrow was a guest at the committee s May meeting. I feel the dialogue we prepared for has finally begun. Pastor Morrow accepted our invitation to join us for the 13th Annual Chicago Ecumenical Prayer Service on June 9. The Ecumenical Prayer Service was hosted this year by the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese. Co-sponsored by the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity of the Catholic Church, the prayer service took place at St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Cathedral in Bellwood. The Service was prepared by representatives of Christian churches to celebrate the annual Unity observance. Each year a different country provides a cultural and religious focus. This year that country was India. The theme was taken from Michah 6: WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE OF US? Before the Prayer Service, there were round table discussions and refreshments. This enabled groups to engage in Gospel-inspired dialogue before praying together. It was a wonderful opportunity for committee members and parishioners who joined us on that day. The positive interaction had two sides - - one distinctly religious and the other cultural. Since the Ecumenical Service, our committee has met with Pastor Morrow and parishioners from Messiah Lutheran Church. It was another introductory dialogue. What Ecumenism Means to Me? was the groundbreaking question. The question allowed representatives to introduce themselves. The introductions revealed unique experiences as well as common ground. We briefly discussed the most recent development in Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue-- From Conflict to Communion. Released June 17 by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Lutheran World Federation, the document outlines ideas for joint commemorations in 2017 of Martin Luther s 95 Theses, often recognized as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. We agreed to explore the new document as well as the 1999 joint agreement of Catholics and Lutherans on Justification. The importance of the earlier document is that it represents essential harmony and agreement for Catholics and Lutherans about Salvation. In weeks to come, more information on the Lutheran- Catholic Dialogue and other Ecumenical, Interfaith, and Interreligious news will appear in the Bulletin. - Fr. Luczak

Page Three Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7, 2013 As you ve heard over the past two weeks, the Teach Who Christ Is Campaign is underway. The campaign, raising funds for the Archdiocese of Chicago and individual Parishes, was developed for the sole purpose of supporting Catholic education and strong faith formation. Over the next several weeks and months, we will share information in the hope that you, too will agree that a successful campaign is critical to our Parish, the community and the Archdiocese of Chicago. One of the main goals is making Catholic education available and affordable. Today, almost 89,000 elementary and high school children in the Archdiocese of Chicago are benefitting from Catholic education. Statistically, high school graduation rates from Catholic schools are 99% compared to a 61% city wide average. Composite ACT test scores of 22.9 compares to a state average of 20.9 and a national average of % of Catholic schools outperformed all or most other educational options including magnet and charter schools. Significantly lower drop out rates and better education leads to brighter prospects for employment and the ability to become productive adults. Catholic education provides a safe place for people to learn because of what we believe about love and respect. Catholic schools also perform important civic functions by grounding students, both Catholic and those from other faiths, in the virtues that produce good citizens. Tuition costs can make it difficult, if not impossible, for children to attend Catholic schools. $150 million will be allocated to a new scholarship fund. This fund will support the primary objective by making scholarships available to those in need. We all have a vested interest in supporting education for future generations. Closer to home and away from the Catholic school environment, Catholic education and faith formation happens in Parishes every day. Religious education programs for our children and faith formation for our adults is also one of the core objectives. 90,000 children and teens are enrolled in programs in our parishes Parishes offer a variety of programs in English and other languages addressing the needs and diversity of Catholics everywhere Parishes offer education programs to persons with disabilities within their communities 50% of our children are not receiving any formal education in their Catholic faith 49% of adult Catholics say they cannot explain their faith to others per an NCR study from September 2005 Religious education and faith formation programs come in many forms and require funding to strengthen current programs, develop new programs where needed and continually support catechists in their continuing education pursuits. Many parishes struggle to provide the financial support necessary for better tools, equipment and instructional materials to keep our students engaged and enrich our catechists. The Archdiocese has targeted $10 million directly for the development and enhancement of religious education programs and training for catechists. As we develop our case statement we need to focus on our religious education needs and wants here at St. Isaac Jogues.

See you there! RAISING FAITH-FILLED KIDS: WORDS Consider all the thousands of words you speak to your family every day. Words are powerful. They can lift us up, knock us down, wound us deeply, or cause our hearts to soar. Words allow us to communicate what we want and need, what we believe and value, and whom we love and why. When we make a promise, we say, I give you my word, which means I stake my reputation and honor on what I say. At Mass, we hear the words of Scripture and pray, Thanks be to God. In the coming year, we will reflect on one word each week to help you grow strong as a Catholic parent. This week simply notice the words you share with your family. Do your words nurture your children s tender faith? Tom McGrath, c2013, Archdiocese of Chicago in partnership with Loyola Press

Page Five Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7, 2013 WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR? Salaam or Peace As our Muslim neighbors begin their fast during the month of Ramadan this week, we begin a series of articles about Islam from the Archdiocesan Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. As we strive to grow in respect of and knowledge of other Christian and faith traditions, we hope you will find this helpful. Thanks for taking a glimpse at this new insert in your Sunday bulletin. The title itself may be quite familiar for most of us as we, from time to time, listen to the Gospel that tells us the story about the Good Samaritan. A driver who got stuck on a deserted road may praise a fellow as a Good Samaritan for stopping by and giving him or her a rise home. That s how familiar this parable is to us. Aptly illustrated by its simple yet strikingly profound graphic, this Who is my neighbor? section announces a start of a literary-catechetical series that seeks to inform us about the religion and life of Muslims. Why Muslims? First, we can ask ourselves: How much do we know about Muslims or Islam? Shouldn t we be interested to know the Muslims in our neighborhoods? In our workplaces? Or the Muslims whom we meet from time to time in the streets or markets? Do we really know Who is my neighbor? More next week! MISSION Today s first reading from Isaiah was occasioned by the return of the Jewish people from exile. The prophet visualizes the Holy City as a mother welcoming her children home. The people may now look forward to prosperity and comfort. In this post -Pentecostal season, the Church attributes this sense of fulfillment to the Holy Spirit. Paul, on the other hand, speaks of the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the single thing of which he will boast, for it is the means by which we are recreated. The comfort and prosperity promised in the first reading are here transformed by a deepening of the Christian paradox. Luke s Gospel describes the calling and the mission of seventy-two others, who are commissioned to bring in the harvest. The number is symbolic, since according to Jewish tradition the number of nations in the world is seventy-two. This then is a universal mission, a catholic mission to all the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Registration for the Religious Education Program for Kindergarten through Confirmation Year II continues! Please send in or drop off the form that was mailed to returning families or if you are new to the Religious Education Program, please call the RE Office, 847/ , to set up a time to come in and fill out registration forms. You will also need to bring a copy of each child s baptismal certificate if they were not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Church. Kindergarten classes meet on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Grs. 1 Confirmation Year II meet on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children come each year as no one year suffices in providing what is important for a strong faith foundation. Students preparing for sacraments must attend for the two immediate years prior to receiving each sacrament. If families have children with special needs or who have not received their sacraments, we would be happy to meet with you and discuss options. There is tuition along with applicable book and sacrament fees. Families with financial concerns are encouraged to talk with us as no child is denied religious education because of finances. All are welcome! If you have questions, please call the Religious Education Office at 847/ We look forward to the opportunity to help all families raise their children in our Catholic faith!

Page Six Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7, 2013 YEAR OF STRONG CATHOLIC PARENTS On July 1 st the Archdiocese of Chicago entered the third year of our Strategic Pastoral Plan, Reflect Christ s Light. The goal of this plan, which spans , is to grow the Catholic Community of faith in each parish in the Archdiocese by 20 percent by The purpose of the plan is to more deeply incorporate baptized Catholics into the Catholic Church over the entire course of their lives. The first year was the Year of Teens and Young Adults; the second year (which we just completed) was Year of Sunday Mass and now we begin the Year of Strong Catholic Parents. The focus of this third year is to foster deeper connections with parents, to provide a deep understanding of the sacraments as well as a growing appreciation for them as encounters with Christ and as the basis of the Christian life. It is hoped to highlight and encourage parents responsibility to raise their children in the faith, to create a family and home life that fosters a knowledge of faith, prayer and service in the world that works for justice and an appreciation of one s unique vocation or calling by God. This invitation to deeper reflection on their faith lives will hopefully lead to more confident, more courageous witness as they serve as role models and pass on the faith to their children. As we move forward into this year, we invite parents, grandparents, and others to share suggestions or ideas of events/ resources/etc. to assist parents and our parish to be strong in faith and to share it with enthusiasm and conviction with our children and teens. Send your thoughts to the RE Office, call 847/ , or to sijre2004@yahoo.com. PRAYING FOR OUR COUNTRY While the Fortnight For Altar Flowers In Loving Memory of Roy Breyer Marlene Garber In Loving Memory of Michael Stachura Sharon Doyle Freedom has concluded, the need for prayer for religious freedom and conscience rights to be upheld remains. Come pray the Patriotic Rosary each Friday at 7 p.m. in the church and/or join in First Friday Adoration and Devotions, 7-10 p.m. (next one is Aug. 2).

Page Seven Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7, 2013 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are among the missing. Some find the summer s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the sabbatical rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live. By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situates us in community, and evokes a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society s life. While there are few universals among all the Na ve American peoples, one is a constant - the earth is our mother, and we need to treat it with respect. Na ve peoples knew how to walk so ly on the land, to treat it with respect, and to pass this love on to their children and grandchildren. Teachings were to honor the earth, to learn from what came before us, and to understand that we are dependent on the plants and animals that deserve our respect. How might our world be different if we were be er able to integrate their wisdom into our Chris an life of faith today.
