2 Page Two Third Sunday of Advent December 12, 2010 From the Pastor GAUDETE SUNDAY Was it nostalgia or a higher motivation that prompted me to order a used edition of the Year of Grace by Pius Parsch from Amazon. com? Pius Parsch was a pioneer in liturgical scholarship. In some ways, I suppose, he may seem quaint. Others might judge his commentary "dated" because it refers directly the pre-vatican II Ordo and Missal. With the wider use of the Extraordinary Form and greater interest in Catholic continuity, my five volume set of the Year of Grace may once again be a valuable resource. Pius Parsch s reflection on Gaudete Sunday is both historically and aesthetically helpful to the average Catholic. Like children awaiting the Christ Child, we are hardly able to restrain our happiness over the coming of the Lord. Actually it is Christmas joy anticipated. The Church modifies her colors; instead of violet, she uses rose, a softened hue of violet, and thus a compromise between colors symbolizing penance and joy. Unlike other days in Advent, the altar is adorned with flowers, organ music is permitted; and at High Mass the assistant ministers again wear tunic and dalmatic. Persons who love the liturgy should celebrate such extraordinary days in a special manner and make the most of their distinguishing features. This description recalls some of the most beautiful memories I have of liturgies in the main chapel of the major seminary at Mundelein. For most of Advent, the choir led the congregation in plainchant. On Gaudete Sunday, the choir sang polyphonic settings of the Mass and more elaborate Motets. I especially remember the elegant old rosecolored vestments. As Catholics, we rarely used the term high church. When we did, Gaudete Sunday, came to mind! Gaudete Sunday was so "christened because of its Introit or Entrance Antiphon taken from Philippians 4:4 Gaudete in Domino simper: iterum dico, gaudete Rejoice in the Lord always: again I say, rejoice The English word "gaudy" is overwhelmingly negative. It ordinarily means ostentatiously or tastelessly ornamented or presented;" The great poet, Alexander Pope, had a ready analogy when he observed: false eloquence like prismatic glass, its gaudy colors spreads on every place. But there is another sense of gaudy more compatible to its original Latin meaning. The word is best preserved at Oxford and other English Universities. A gaudy is an annual feast or celebration - - one that is eagerly anticipated and joyful. Returning to Pius Parsch s Year of Grace, I was struck by his advice to pastors. Pastors could use the occasion (Gaudete Sunday) to preach on the adornment of the house of God. Rarely is the Church's mood so unmistakable. Our parish has a beautiful rose set of vestments. I encourage, but do not pressure, visiting priests to wear them. We use rose scented incense. The altar usually has a rose and pine floral arrangement. The music too is more joyful as we sense the nearness of Christ. Gaudete Sunday is part of the richness of our Catholic heritage. Why not enjoy it? - Fr. Luczak

This leaves us $4,105 behind our Sunday collection goal for the year. We wish to express our thanks to all parishioners who continue to give of their time, talent and treasure in support of the Parish. Children need to be comfortable in front of a large group of people, able to follow direction with a little help if needed, come to practice in the church on Monday, December 20 th, at 6:30 p.m. accompanied by a parent or guardian, and be present at the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass. There are no lines for them to learn, just movement and gestures. Please call the RE Office, 847/ , by Wednesday, December 15 th, to sign your child(ren) up. We will be able to continue this longstanding tradition only if we have enough youth to participate. ADVENT WEEK III Pray: Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God s own work for justice. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father s joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing and love. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen. Proclaim: Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another? This question is still asked by the world today. Jesus answer to John is still valid today: the good news is proclaimed to the poor, restoration is occurring. Jesus testimony to John is still valid to all disciples: we are messengers sent ahead of Jesus to prepare His way. Discuss/Journal: How does my life show to the world that Jesus is the One Who is here and Who is to come? How do I encourage those in my faith community to live as a disciple of Jesus?

4 Page Four Third Sunday of Advent December 12, 2010 Act: Affirm others good qualities and show appreciation for the way they bless your life. Be part of the Visit to the Nursing Homes (12/14) with the St. Vincent DePaul Society to share the spirit of Christmas. Attend the Simbang Gabi Mass and Celebration (12/16). Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation if you have not already done so. PREPARING THE WAY OF THE LORD John the Baptist tells us that our behavior should show our repentance and our change of hearts. Take times this week to carry out good works and share the good news of the Gospel. When you come to church next weekend, stay by the stable (over by the baptismal font) and share in a tradition for many peoples by placing hay on the stable floor and thus prepare a soft place for the Holy Child. A basket of straw will be near the stable. Take a few pieces, say a quiet prayer offering the Lord your witness and works of the week, and place the straw in the stable. Thank you! This year there will be new Catholics Come Home ads on TV from mid-december to mid-january. Once again, the ads will become a catalyst for faith conversations and moments of evangelization in homes, schools, neighborhoods and places of business around the Archdiocese. Here at St. Isaac Jogues we are asking you to pray for those who have been away to consider the invitation to come home, to invite family members, friends or neighbors to join you for Mass at Christmas, to give them some of the information that will be available at the Welcome Table in the Holy Family Room beginning next weekend or that will be found in the pamphlet rack by the parking lot door (near the Ushers Room) and to accompany them to parish events. More information about this evangelization effort can be found on their website: OPlATKI AVAILABLE Envelopes of oplatki, the traditional Christmas Wafer, are available in the Holy Family Room this weekend and next, as well as at the Rectory. A donation will be appreciated. MISSION TRIP SUPPORT Christopher Dexter is a Sophomore at Loras College in Dubuque, IA, and is participating in a service trip once again to New Orleans the week of January 22-28, through the college s Campus Ministry. They will be working with the Phoenix of New Orleans Foundation (PNOLA) to help rebuild houses that are still ruined from Hurricane Katrina. Chris and his family are parishioners for many years and are active in various liturgical ministries. Chris writes, I am participating in this trip again because I really fell in love with New Orleans last year and the trip had a huge impact on my life. It really showed me how a city can work together and not give up hope after they had a major disaster hit their city. I was fortunate enough to receive another opportunity to participate on this trip and I wouldn t miss it for the world. I hope to gain the same kind of things I did last year and learn even more about the city and the people that live there. Your prayers for Chris and this mission trip will be greatly appreciated. If you would also like to support Chris and the trip with a monetary donation (for travel and building supplies), please send it to Dee Stanton at the Religious Education Office by January 12 th. Checks should be made payable to the parish and we will then send one total check. Thank you for your consideration and continued encouragement of our young adults as they serve others.

6 Page Six Third Sunday of Advent December 12, 2010 HUMAN CONCERNS Preparing the Spirit for Christmas Slow Me Down, Lord Today, I offer a poem by Orin L. Crain. As you read & reflect upon it, may you come to stillness, remember ing that our Advent journey is about preparing Him room in our hearts! Slow me down, Lord. Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time. Give me, amid the confusion of the day, the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with soothing music of the singing streams that live in my memory. Teach me the art of taking minute vacations --- of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to smile at a child, to read a few lines from a good book. Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of life s enduring values, that I may grow toward my greater destiny. Remind me each day that the race is not always to the swift; that there is more to life than increasing its speed. Let me look upward to the towering oak and know that it grew great and strong because it grew slowly and well. 9 Page Nine Third Sunday of Advent December 12, 2010 The Story of Our Lady of Guadalupe (based on the original account) December 9th, 1531, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Juan Diego, a recent convert to the Catholic faith, was walking to attend the early morning Mass in Mexico City. Passing by Tepeyac Hill he heard the beautiful singing of birds, seemingly from heaven. Looking to see where the celestial music was coming from, he suddenly heard a young woman's voice affectionately calling his name, "Juanito." Reaching the top of the hill, he saw a radiant woman clothed in splendid light - the Ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of God. She told Juan that she desired him to be her special messenger to the Bishop of Mexico City. Juan was to tell the bishop that Our Lady wanted a church to be built where she could manifest her Son and hear the petitions of her spiritual children. After being put off by the bishop's servants, Juan was finally granted an audience with Franciscan Bishop Fray Juan Zumarraga. The bishop didn't initially believe Juan Diego and asked him to return another day. Secretly, the bishop had been invoking the intercession of the Mother of God for help. The Spaniards had recently conquered the native Aztec people and were treating them harshly. Very few were willing to abandon their pagan gods and embrace the religion of their new dictators. All of this weighed heavy on the heart of Bishop Zumarraga, whom history now knows as the "Protector of the Native People." He wondered if Juan Diego's story was the answer to his prayers. Dejected, Juan returned to Tepeyac and asked Our Lady to use someone else more worthy than himself. She assured him that he was personally chosen to be her ambassador. The next day he returned to plead with the bishop. Though impressed by Juan's persistence, he was still unsure. He sent Juan to tell the Lady he needed a sign in order to know if it was truly her. Upon hearing the bishop's request, Our Lady told Juan to return the next day and she would give him the sign he needed. Returning home, Juan found his uncle ill and close to death. Instead of returning the next day, Juan stayed home and took care of his ailing uncle. Early on December 12th, Juan rushed to Mexico City in order to get a priest to administer the last rites to his dying uncle. On his way he went around the back of Tepeyac Hill in order to avoid Our Lady whom he knew would surely understand. But Our Lady meet him anyway telling him not to worry, his uncle was already healed. He was to learn later that at that moment Our Lady had appeared to his uncle, who was restored to health. She urged Juan to go to the top of the hill were he would find flowers miraculously growing. Juan was astonished to see so many vibrant flowers during the frosty time of the year. He cut them and gathered them in his tilma (cloak). Our Lady arranged the flowers with her own hands, rolled up the tilma and ordered Juan not to unfurl his tilma until he was in the presence of the bishop. After being harassed by the bishop's servants, Juan was finally brought in to see him. After recounting every detail of his conversation with Our Lady, he let down his tilma and the flowers fell to the floor. Juan was surprised when everyone in the room also fell to the floor on their knees. The image of Our Lady had miraculously appeared on Juan's tilma! Repenting for his unbelief with abundant tears, Bishop Juan Zumarraga promised to build the shrine that Our Lady had requested. Soon the church was built and the holy image transferred. The story spread like wildfire and people began to stream in to see the heavenly image and hear the story from Juan Diego. Many miracles starting happening and in the following years some 10 million were baptized and converted to Jesus Christ! Pope John Paul II declared Saint Diego the greatest evangelist of all times.(based on the original account)

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
