2 Page Two Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2009 and sought out St. Hilary, the Bishop of Poitiers, as a spiritual mentor. Ordained an exorcist; Martin became a monk and went on to be chosen as the Bishop of Tours. His orthodoxy, eloquence, and holiness made him a beloved shepherd. Miracles were credited to him as well as the gift of spiritual discernment. It is said that, as he lay dying in 397, he recognized an evil spirit. Martin was strong enough to confront the spirit: What do you want, horrible beast? You will find nothing in me that is yours! MARTINMAS: Faith and Folklore November 11 is the Feast of St. Martin of Tours. Born in 316, at a time when the Roman empire was making a rough transition from paganism to Christianity, Martin became a courageous witness without suffering martyrdom. Even though his parents were militantly pagan, Martin associated freely with Christians. He became a catechumen before entering military service at fifteen. During this time, he encountered a poor, naked beggar at the gates of Amiens. The beggar asked for alms in Christ's name. Martin had nothing to give the beggar. He cut his cape in two, and gave half to the freezing man. The following night, in a dream, Christ appeared to Martin wearing the part of the cape he had given to the beggar, and said: Martin, the Catechumen, has clothed me with his mantle!" At eighteen, Martin was baptized. He no longer wished to be a soldier, but, at the pleading of his superior officer, he remained in service two more years. Martin s crisis of conscience developed not only because he had embraced the peace of Christ, but because the emperor, Julian the Apostate, was a pagan reactionary and an enemy of the Church. Martin refused to serve. The emperor accused him of cowardice and had him imprisoned. Eventually Martin was released The spirit left him and Martin died in peace. Devotion to St. Martin of Tours spread throughout Europe. In the Middle Ages, Martinmas, his feast day on November 11, was celebrated with extraordinary solemnity. Harvest time and winter's onset brought pre- Christian customs and the saint's day together. That is why St. Martin became the patron of wine and vintners. Legends of the saint and charming folklore combined to make Martinmas the closest antecedent to Thanksgiving. Roast Goose and a banquet were part of the English, German, and Dutch heritage even after the Protestant Reformation. Perhaps those closer to their European roots have heard stories of visions of St. Martin himself, riding across meadow and moor on a white horse. The childlike or visionary will tell you that from his divided, torn cloak, St. Martin releases the first snow of the season. That is why, with the first snow, Polish and German children, cry out: Here comes St. Martin on his white horse! I am told that is the reason for baking a delicious, horseshoe-shaped cookie -- St. Martin's Horseshoes. I don't have the recipe. Do you? -Fr. Luczak

The author wanted to encourage the people by telling heroic stories about a person named Daniel who Lived many centuries earlier. For most of their history, Old Testament people believed only in, at best, a shadowy existence after death. Today s passage contains one of the earliest references to a growing belief in a more developed form of life after death. HEBREWS: Scholars feel that the community for which the Letter to the Hebrews was written included Christians of Jewish origin. Since the letter was written after the Jewish temple was destroyed, they were pining for the old days when the high priest offered daily sacrifices in the temple. The author says they shouldn t feel sad. They no longer need a temple, ******************************************************************** HUMAN CONCERNS Nov. 9 Flu Clinic Cancelled Due to shortages of the seasonal flu vaccine, Walgreen s has cancelled the flu shot clinic they were to hold here tomorrow, Nov. 9. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. For information on where you may find a flu shot, call the manager of the Walgreen s at Golf & Washington at Safety & Health Board Meeting The newly forming Safety & Health Board meets this Tues., Nov. 10, at 7PM in Room 6. The Board s purpose is to support & expand our Parish Nurse Program. Those interested in maintaining the health & safety of our parish & local communities are welcome to join. For further information, please contact Pat Kellen, Parish Nurse, Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues, at Celebration of Mass & the H1N1 Influenza The Archdiocese of Chicago (through the Office for Divine Worship) and US Conference of Catholic of Bishops (through the Secretariat for Divine Worship) have issued recommendations as regards Swine Flu and the celebration of Mass. Both emphasize the import of good hygiene and common sense. All of us would do well to remember that frequent cleansing of the hands, either with soap and water or with an alcohol based solution combats the spread or contraction of flu. This is especially important for those who minister Holy Communion during the celebration of the Eucharist. Ordinary and Extraordinary Ministers should make an effort to cleanse their hands discretely before and after distributing Holy Communion. An anti-bacterial solution makes this process very easy to do. (archchgo.org/h1n1/parishes) The USCCB further states that priests and deacons as well should be

6 Page Six Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2009 especially reminded of the need to practice good hygiene and that Ministers of Holy Communion should always wash their hands before Mass begins. (usccb.org/liturgy/swineflu.shtml) As regards the sign of peace and Holy Communion, ODW says, Those with flu or cold symptoms should especially act responsibly. Refraining from taking Holy Communion from the Chalice and sharing the sign of peace with a simple nod of the head and verbal exchange instead of shaking hands, and avoiding close contact with others will go a long way in helping prevent others from catching the same illness. The USCCB reminds us, though, that Adults may be contagious (with H1N1) from one day before developing symptoms up to seven days after getting sick. Children can be contagious for longer Stay home when you are sick The faithful should be instructed not to receive from the cup if they feel ill. The USCCB and ODW will continue to monitor the situation and provide pastoral responses to influenza in particular local areas. For further information, visit: Ten Questions on Influenza/ H1N1 Flu and the Liturgy from the USCCB (click on H1N1Influenza on left side of the Home Page); October 4 Flu Clinic Report At the October 4 Flu Shot Clinic fifty-nine people were immunized against pneumonia and/ or the seasonal flu. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
