2 Page Two Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 28, 2010 REFLECTION FOR A LENTEN JOURNEY The Grand Inquisitor Dostoyevski But when the Son of Man comes, will He find Faith on Earth? - Luke 18:8 Fyodor Dostoyevski is acclaimed as a "psychological novelist." His characters are carefully, often painfully, drawn. They reflect the author's selfconscious experience of being humiliated, wounded, and underestimated by others. The great critic, D. S. Mirsky, describes Dostoyevski s gift for in depth character analysis: Dostoyevsky... deals in those psychic strata where the mind and will are in constant contact with higher spiritual entities, where the ordinary stream of experience is constantly deflected by ultimate and absolute values and agitated by a never subsiding wind of the spirit... Dostoyevsky's "cruelty" finds a particularly, rich field to feed on in the analysis of wounded and suffering human dignity. Dostoyevsky is dark and complex - - Russian" in the quintessential and stereotypical sense. But is he as "religious" as he appears to be? Again, D.S. Mirsky offers a key insight. His (Dostoyevsky's) religion is Orthodoxy because it is the religion of the Russian people, whose mission it is to redeem the world by a reassertion of the Christian faith. Christianity is to him not so much of purity and salvation, as of charity and compassion... His Christianity in particular is of a very doubtful kind... it was no ultimate solution to him The Brothers Karamazov is a great novel. But, even at its best, it holds a "mirror" to the values, prejudices, and flaws of 19th Century Russian Society. The "parable" of The Grand Inquisitor is powerful and unforgettable. Unfortunately, it perpetuates the "black Legend" of the Inquisition and popular Russian prejudices against the Roman Catholic Church in general and the Jesuits in particular. Is it possible to read The Grand Inquisitor and not be "turned off" totally as a Catholic? If we cannot accept the "point of view" of the narrator, Ivan Karamazov, who is an atheist, or his brother, Alyosha, who is an Orthodox monk, we can appreciate the "parable" as thought provoking and challenging to all Christians. I am sure many of us have wondered what would happen if Jesus came back in our time. Thomas Carlyle cynically observed that if Jesus came back, he would not be arrested or crucified. He would be invited to dinner. People would listen to what he had to say and then laugh at him! Dostoyevski's imagination conjures up something far worse. He has Ivan choose Seville during the height of the Inquisition. Jesus returns. He works miracles. He teaches and preaches. He is recognized by the people. But he is also recognized by the Grand Inquisitor, who has him arrested and condemned to be burned at the stake. The Inquisitor does not really "interrogate Jesus. Jesus never says a word in response to the Inquisitor s condemnation. Of what is Jesus guilty? The Inquisitor argues that the Church no longer needs Jesus. His return only interferes with the mission of the Church. No new revelations! No exaltation of human freedom! The Inquisitor, in his arrogance, tells Jesus: We have corrected Thy work and have founded it upon miracle, mystery and authority. And men rejoiced that they were again led like sheep, and that the terrible gift that had brought them such suffering was, at last, lifted from their hearts. Jesus is denounced for resisting the devil's temptations in the desert -- to turn stones into loaves, to leap from the parapet of the temple and

3 Page Three Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 28, 2010 be rescued by angels, and to rule over earthly kingdoms. Jesus is condemned because He chose FREEDOM. In that, the Inquisitor maintains that Jesus has misjudged human nature. Only a very few can use the freedom that Jesus wants all to have. The majority are then excluded from redemption. They are the massa damnata. They are doomed to suffer. A particularly shocking revelation by the Inquisitor is that he is an atheist and that the Church follows the "wise spirit, the dread spirit of death and destruction." In other words, the Inquisitor and the Church serve the devil! Jesus, who has been silent all along, does not answer the Inquisitor. He kisses him instead on his bloodless, aged lips. Afterwards, the Inquisitor releases Jesus, but he warns him never to return. Still silent, Jesus leaves, disappearing into "the dark alleys of the city." As Ivan concludes the story, he relates that the Inquisitor remains unchanged by his encounter with Jesus. The kiss glows in his heart, but the old man adheres to his idea." After telling the story, Ivan asks his brother, Alyosha, if he renounces him for his views. Alyosha says nothing, but kisses Ivan. Ivan replies: That s plagiarism Thank you though. What are we to make of the parable of The Grand Inquisitor? Is it merely an "atheist's tale" attacking the Church or is it a very challenging parable that can lead us to search for a truer understanding of what the Church is? Fr. Romano Guardini once observed: The church is the cross on which Christ was crucified. One could not separate Christ from his cross, and one must live in a state of permanent dissatisfaction with the church. In an odd way, loyal son of the Catholic Church, Romano Guardini, has discovered a message very compatible with the spirit of Dostoyevsky s, The Grand Inquisitor. We must never believe that we must choose between Christ or the Church. The two cannot be separated. Even when God s people sin. Jesus does not abandon them. Jesus can and will be condemned" by modern atheists. Like Ivan Karamazov, they may tell imaginative stories that disturb us but they cannot take away our freedom nor destroy the truth that sets us free. - Fr. Luczak Financial Update St. Isaac Jogues Parish, like it s parishioners, has been impacted by the ongoing economic downturn. As was reported last November, the parish incurred a deficit of almost $75,000 in the last fiscal year (July 2008 to June 2009). In response to this, important and at times painful, steps to control parish spending were taken. These included a salary freeze for all parish staff members, a review of all parish spending and the delay of improvements. While these actions have resulted in a year over year reduction in parish expenditures they alone have not been enough to balance our budget. Over the past nine months we have published a weekly recap of contributions. As you know from these reports, we have fallen behind this fiscal year s contribution budget by almost $11,000. This shortfall, coupled with last year s deficit, is of great concern. In order to ensure the financial stability of the parish we are asking for the help of all Parishioners. Starting next week we will be initiating a special monthly collection. The proceeds of this monthly collection will be used to offset our deficit. Please help us ensure the future of our parish through your participation in this collection. Our thanks to all our parishioners who have continued their generous support of the parish with their time, talent and treasure in these difficult times.

St. Faustina s Diary indicates it is that this Octave Day of Easter is a day chosen by Christ as a day of extraordinary graces a complete outpouring of His Mercy upon all who approach Him with great trust and expectant faith. To properly celebrate this great day, we need to prepare well. In his 1985 Lenten Pastoral Letter, Cardinal Macharski, Archbishop of Cracow, Poland, pointed out that all of Lent should be a preparation for the celebration of the Paschal Mystery: the Crucified and Risen Christ, who is Mercy Incarnate. He urges us to use Lent to prepare ourselves for this great day, placing more and more trust in the mercy of God and putting mercy into practice throughout Lent with our deeds of mercy. He also stressed the importance of receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. In addition there are many other things one can do on a daily basis to prepare for Divine Mercy Sunday. A few suggestions follow: +Show mercy to others by doing whatever spiritual and corporal works of mercy you can, depending on your own personal circumstances. +Pause for prayer during the 3:00hour. +Make a continuous novena to the Divine Mercy. +Play tapes, cd s, dvd s that focus on mercy. +Read the Diary of St. Faustina or Pope John Paul II s encyclical Rich In Mercy, or other devotional booklets +Trust in Jesus even more +Read out loud selections about Divine Mercy from Sacred Scripture. +Pray the Stations of the Cross during the 3:00 hour. In anticipation of the Feast, Our Lord specifically asked that nine days of special prayers to the Divine Mercy begin on Good Friday along with the recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Devotional pamphlets, describing how to pray the Chaplet and outlining the novena, are available at the doors of our church TODAY. The Feast of Mercy Mass will be celebrated on April 11 th at Noon. It will be followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 3 p.m. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 2-3 p.m. with confessions being heard in both English and Polish. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3 p.m. followed by Benediction. All are encouraged to participate as able.

ESSENTIAL REDUCTION All my theology is reduced to this narrow compass: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. Holy Thursday Pilgrimage For many years the community of St. Isaac Jogues has made a pilgrimage to other churches on Holy Thursday. The Liturgy of the Lord's Last Supper is at 7:30 p.m. We leave promptly at 9:00 p.m. and return to St. Isaac's by midnight. Why on this night do we travel from church to church to praise the Lord? It was at the Last Supper Jesus gave us the everlasting symbol of His eternal presence in our lives. He gave us the miracle of the Holy Eucharist to remind us always that He is with us to help and strengthen us as we go about living our lives. As the community of Christian believers grew, it soon came to encompass the whole world. Over the years, the Eucharist became a symbol not only of Christ's presence among us, but also of Christ's command that we all be one in love for Him and for each other. So, on this night we travel about to share ours and each other's celebration for the Holy Eucharist with one another. If you wish to join us, it is necessary to reserve a seat on the bus. It is important to make a reservation early as we will have just one bus. Please call the rectory ( ). A donation of $5.00 per person is requested to offset the cost of the bus. In recognition of Good Friday, April 2, 2010, our parish offices will be closed. Friday night Bingo for that day will canceled as well.

9 Page Nine Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 28, The Mass Book is now open. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Writing in the Sand Try in your mind To bend down And write in the sand The words of the Good Lord And stay calm Take a deep breath Count to ten Put off rash judgment Control the tongue And the emotions if you can For it s not easy To say the right words In the face of a dilemma A heated argument Or perceived betrayal of trust In trying moments A mild answer after a pause Clears the mind better Than a harsh word Steered by pagan thoughts Falling short of the glory of God We all have a blind spot A splinter in the eye That needs to be first removed By following the Light of Christ - Deacon Rod Holy Thursday Pilgrimage For many years the community of St. Isaac Jogues has made a pilgrimage to other churches on Holy Thursday. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
