2 Page Two Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4, 2011 A PROPHETIC AND POETIC PORTAL : Charles Peguy s Response to God s Word It began with Ezekiel. Given still another prophetic task, he is now the watchman of Israel. He is to encourage true faith in a displaced and disoriented people. He is to guard exiles from desperation. But he is given an even more daunting challenge to admonish the wicked. Do not preach and then abandon them. God tells the prophet: If you tell the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked from his way, the wicked shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death. Yes, Ezekiel and all of us, really, are in the strongest sense, Our Brother s keeper. This reminds me of a haunting reflection by the poet and mystic, Charles Peguy: When we get to heaven, God will ask, Where are the others? The others? The wicked, sinners, the marginalized, rejects, those who have been guilty of the unforgivable these are to join us if we wish to save ourselves! The Gospel is clear about reconciliation and the role of the Community. Every effort is to be made first by the individual who has a grievance against his brother, then by two members of the Community, then by the church. All those involved may or may not succeed in their appeal for reconciliation, but their responsibility to make the appeal remains. The Word of God, of course, is in conflict with the way of the world. It was thus in the time of Ezekiel, in Our Lord s time on earth and ever since. Even those who profess their faith have great difficulty living responsibly loving their neighbor as themselves. I think poets who believe in the Gospel understand it best. For years, I have been discovering fragments of Charles Peguy s works. The first time I heard one of Peguy s parables it was in the homily at my First Mass. Fr. George Dyer effectively used Sleep to show how God s vigil over an anxiety-ridden man elicits a divine concern over the human inability to trust. If I were to ask you to do great and difficult things, you would do them. If I were to ask you to endure hardship and want, you would accept my will. But, if I were to ask you to trust me, you cannot! I would later find that much of Peguy s poetry is presented as a dialogue with God or a monologue by God or a believer. Recently, I purchased a new translation of Peguy s The Portal of the Mystery of Hope. It was written during a dark period of his life. It has been called a hymn to hope that rose out of the most profound despair. Yet, The Portal continues to have a prophetic appeal for generations trapped on the threshold of apathy or despair. Listen to some of Madame Gervase s monologue: The faith that I love the best, says God is hope. Faith doesn t surprise me. It s not surprising What surprises me, says God, is hope. I can t get over it. This little hope that seems like nothing at all. This little girl hope. Immortal This little girl, nothing at all, She alone, carrying the others, who will cross worlds past She alone will guide the Virtues and Worlds. One of the remarkable things about Peguy s poetic response to the Gospel is that he not only gives God a human voice, but human feelings. For Peguy, God is hoping in the sinner, just as the sinner hopes in God. Those human feelings give a troubled emotional complexity to God in Peguy s kenotic imagery: The Good Pastor, that is, the good shepherd, Learned anxiety from the lost sheep. From the sheep who did not remain with the other ninety-nine A mortal anxiety. (The devouring anxiety in the heart of Jesus) The anxiety of not finding it. Of not knowing.

3 Page Three Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4, 2011 Of never recovering it. Human anxiety. The mortal anxiety of having to condemn it. But finally he is saved. The savior himself is saved. He is saved from having to condemn it. Now he can breathe again. That makes it forever one of the saved. He will never have to condemn the soul. Charles Peguy s spiritual journey took him from socialism and secular journalism in 19th Century France to a profound conversion to Catholicism in His faith-inspired poetry had an appeal to his contemporaries because he aimed to speak to the present situation through a recovery of the Church s past. A return to origins and sources is the basis for what Vatican II called aggiornamento. Charles Peguy once said that a revolution is a call from a less perfect tradition to a more perfect tradition. His response to the Word of God is revolutionary in that sense and an inspiration for all who search for a portal to the Mystery of Hope in our time. - Fr. Luczak Newsflash! 5 Page Five Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4, 2011 WORLD YOUTH DAY, CHICAGO STYLE (Thank you to parishioners Zenya Rae, Edrienne Fae and Althea Mae Yap for sharing their thoughts about the Archdiocese of Chicago s celebration of World Youth Day, held at Maryville. They did a great job writing this!) August 20-21, 2011, was by far the best event the three of us could ever experience together. We first heard of it at our teen and youth group meetings held by St. Isaac s and were excited to learn that there was something just for our own age group. First arriving there, we didn t know what to expect. Was it going to be huge with a lot of people? Or small, calm, and collected all quietly praising the Lord? Let us tell you, it was massive! Walking into the hot sweaty gym with loud Christian music playing as teens and young adults just like us gathered around the stage and jammed along with the artist looked awesome! It also turned out that some of our friends that we would not have expected to be there were actually there. It showed us just how strong God is in gathering his followers. Right at the beginning of the night, we followed the Stations of the Cross while sitting on the ground enjoying the live reenactment of it. Being able to have breaks in between each large group activity was probably a big part in making the event successful because it brought in the young aspect of everything being chill. We took advantage of this as we enjoyed the cool, end of summer air outside dancing around. Afterwards, it was time for Mass. We re not going to lie; it was perhaps the longest Mass we have ever been to with the longest homily ever heard. Yet, it was also, the paramount of all Masses in our opinion. We enjoyed the live band playing the gospel music that we had heard many times before, but this time, hearing it in new light. Even though sitting in a humid gym with about 700ish other people that we didn t even know, we felt bonded and connected together with God. The rest of the night included praying the Rosary in not only English, but Spanish, and Tagalog something that we want to learn now. After that, it started raining. But that didn t stop all the joy and happiness that Jesus had managed to bring together in that location. We danced in the rain and enjoyed each other s company. Then, the music on the main stage started back up and they asked for volunteers. They were called Masheti Moses and me (Edrienne) and Julia (our friend we had made) decided to take the risk and volunteer. We stayed up there background dancing for about 5 of their songs yelling and shouting into the crowd, No more poison! Unfortunately, after this, everything started to close up and we all had to pack up. Overall, we think this experience definitely brought us closer to Jesus and even with each other. We are excited for World Youth Day in the years to come and maybe, one day, even go to its bigger version like was held this year in Madrid, Spain. We left with a renewed spirit and a lesson of the Jesus Jive taught to us by some kids from another church (ask any of us who went to show it to you!). This makes us want to make sure that the youth group we are trying to start get going lives on and grows stronger because we feel that having God in your life as a kid, teen, or young adult is very important and helps us to get through life s challenges. This was the best way to end our summer, and incidentally Althea s birthday, and would recommend that any youth that was unsure about attending this year, to come and join us next time!

9 Page Nine Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4, 2011 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Warn the wicked, trying to turn them from their ways (Ezekiel 33:7-9). Psalm If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading Owe nothing to anyone, except mutual love (Romans 13:8-10). Gospel If two agree about anything for which they pray, it shall be granted to them (Matthew 18:15-20). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Col 1:24 2:3; Lk 6:6-11 Tuesday: Col 2:6-15; Lk 6:12-19 Wednesday: Col 3:1-11; Lk 6:20-26 Thursday: Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30; Mt 1:1-16, [18-23] Friday: 1 Tm 1:1-2, 12-14; Lk 6:39-42 Saturday: 1 Tm 1:15-17; Lk 6:43-49 Sunday: Sir 27:30 28:9; Ps 103; Rom 14:7-9; Mt 18:21-35 Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Quilantang Mr. Alexander Rodriguez A MESSAGE OF LOVE In the final verses of today s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, there am I in the midst of them (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken with Jesus present to us. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he does not speak out to dissuade a person from evil, then he, too, will be held responsible. We live in a do your own thing age when moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As St. Paul writes, Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10). Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Dear Parishioners, Welcome to the school year! The children came back to St. John Brebeuf School on August 24 th with a half day of school for our first through eighth grades, Open House for our kindergarten children and their parents and orientation for our preschool children and their parents. Our school s theme this year is Reaching for the Higher Fruit because the teachers, staff and students are going to challenge themselves to work hard and reap the benefits of that hard work. We aren t going to be satisfied with taking the easy way using the image of picking apples from the bottom branches. We are going to be working to our best capacity just like reaching for the sweet juicy apples in the higher branches which have grown with even more sunshine each day. We were busy over the summer preparing for the new school year and getting the school building ready. We are adding a writing lab so teachers may take their classes to work on writing projects at the computers. We have purchased new Math textbooks for kindergarten through eighth grade which will be both challenging and appealing to our students. A helpful feature is that the textbook can also be accessed online so our students will be able to use the books from home. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS Welcome to our newest supporter Lin-Mar Motors Lin-Mar Motors will give a 5% donation to St. Isaac Jogues when you have work done and mention the ad in our bulletin. Thank you for all you do to help make our school such a faith-filled and vital place. We are honored to be a part of such an important ministry of the parish. Please keep us in your prayers this year. You will be in ours. Sincerely, Margaret Whitman Principal

For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
