2 Page Two The Ascension of the Lord May 20, 2012 OUR LADY OF KAZAN She was acclaimed patroness and protector of not only Kazan and Moscow, but all of Russia. In 1709, during a Swedish invasion and again in 1812, during the Napoleonic occupation, Our Lady of Kazan was again successfully invoked. While honored in Kazan, Yaroslavl, and Moscow, a new shrine was completed in St. Petersburg in Here the tsar and his imperial court regularly worshipped. In 1904, the image - - reputed to be the original - was stolen. Since then, there has been little agreement about the whereabouts of the original. There were almost from the start, copies. Many of these were esteemed with the same reverence and devotion as the original. The holy icon of Our Lady of Kazan has had a long history. The original image may have its provenance in Constantinople. Some say it came to Russia as early as the 13th Century. The icon was first enshrined in Kazan, where Our Lady became the protector and patroness of that city. When the Tatars captured Kazan in 1438, they made it their capital. The icon of Our Lady disappeared for more than a century. In 1552, Kazan was liberated by Ivan the Terrible, and the Tatars were defeated. In 1579, Kazan was destroyed by fire. Shortly thereafter, a ten year old girl named Matrona had a dream. Her dream disclosed where the image of Our Lady of Kazan was to be found. Matrona went to the Archbishop and civil authorities with her story, but no one believed. Her. On July 8, 1579, Matrona and her mother dug up the image themselves. It had been buried under a house to protect it from the Tatars. The image was beautifully preserved. When the Archbishop saw it, he accepted its authenticity. Venerated first in the Church of St. Nicholas, the icon was deemed miraculous. Hermogen, a priest of that Church, would later become Metropolitan of Kazan and then Patriarch of Moscow. The icon and the patriarch seemed inseparable. During the Time of Troubles, when Polish troops occupied Moscow, the patriarch entrusted the icon to Princes Minin and Pozharsky, the leaders of the military resistance. On October 22, 1612, the Russians recaptured Moscow. The victory was attributed to Our Lady of Kazan. A shrine was dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan in the Kremlin. Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan With the defeat of the Russo-Japanese War and the onset of World War I, the Russian Empire was torn by revolution and then beset by Godless Communism. It is widely believed that the most venerated icon of Our Lady of Kazan had been sold after the Revolution. Marvelously, a 1730 copy was presented to the Blue Army in Fatima in the 1970s. Housed in a lovely onion-domed chapel, the icon drew many pilgrims to pray for the conversion of Russia. In 1985, I was one of them! Since then, Our Lady of Kazan has joined other images of the Blessed Virgin that I personally honor and revere most. In 1993, the Fatima icon was given to Pope John Paul II. He took it to the Vatican and kept it in his study for 11 years. He said of the icon:

3 Page Three The Ascension of the Lord May 20, 2012 it has found a home with me and has accompanied my daily service to the Church with its motherly gaze. Pope John Paul yearned to visit Moscow and Kazan. He intended to present the icon to the Russian Orthodox Church in person. When this proved impossible, it was officially returned in August of Patriarch Alexis II placed it in Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan Kremlin with great solemnity. I see the icon of Our Lady of Kazan as a symbol of restoration of the Faith to Russia and as an instrument of reconciliation between the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox Communions. May Our Lady quicken our hopes and hasten the day of reunion! -Fr. Luczak LITURGY BOARD SPIRITUAL LIFE The Liturgy Board meets this Tuesday, May 22 nd, at 7:30 p.m. in Rm. 6 of the school. The Corpus Christi Outdoor Procession and other special Masses to be held this summer will be discussed. Mass The Memorial Day Mass will be at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 28 th. Please note that this will be the only Mass of the day. The 2013 Mass Book is now available. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. ALTAR FLOWERS CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE Parishioners are invited to decorate the altar with flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. There will be two arrangements each week. Your name and intention will be listed in the Bulletin. 4 Page Four The Ascension of the Lord May 20, 2012 CHURCH IMPROVEMENT: Question & Response Dear Father Luczak, I have a suggestion as to how you can solve the problem of replacing the church carpeting without incurring an exorbitant cost and without entering into a challenging situation of asbestos abatement. I would have the carpeting professionally cleaned once more to ensure that it is as clean as it can possibly be. Then, I suggest that you install new carpeting right on top of the old carpeting, without removing any old carpeting. Since the old carpeting is glued to the asbestos tiles, there will be no chance of the tile becoming unglued to pose a health hazard. The asbestos tiles will remain in place and we will all benefit from having new carpeting in the church. The old carpeting will act as a liner J. Dear J. Thank you for you suggestion. It seems like a sensible solution to our problem. However, it actually adds another layer to the problem. Whenever we face a complex and potentially expensive project, we call upon the Archdiocesan Office of Facilities and Construction. After describing your suggestion, this is what we were told: The Archdiocese of Chicago does not allow the covering of any asbestos materials and any/all hazardous materials must be removed by approved vendors specializing in abatement We can t delay the cost of removal by covering the hazardous material Covering sub-standard materials (old carpeting, cracked tiles, etc.) actually weakens them, potentially resulting in asbestos exposure We are not allowed to increase the eventual cost of abatement resulting from the addition of new layers of flooring Flooring warranties and guarantees are voided if new material is placed down over sub-standard or hazardous materials We understand your concern. We know that it is a concern you share with many parishioners. The expense and inconvenience of addressing our asbestos problem properly is of secondary importance compared to the safety of our parishioners and the long-term functionality of our Church building. In our search for a permanent solution to this problem, we will continue to work with approved vendors and promise to share what they advise. JUNE 3 CHICAGO-WIDE ECUMENICAL SUNDAY On Sunday, June 3 rd (Trinity Sunday in the Western Church and Pentecost in the Orthodox Church) St. Isaac Jogues Parish has the opportunity to join with other Catholics and Christians in the Chicago area at St. Hedwig Church for a Prayer for Christian Unity observance. Refreshments and conversation will be from 4-5 p.m. followed by a prayer service, 5-6 p.m. Cardinal George is scheduled to be present. Our parish has been asked to make a small display of what we did during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January of this year to share with participants. It is our plan to provide a bus to St. Hedwig if enough people indicate an interest. The church is located at 2226 N. Hoyne Avenue in Chicago. We would leave about 2:45 p.m. and return about 7 p.m. Everyone is invited and encouraged to experience this special observance with other followers of our Lord Jesus Christ! STAMPS FOR THE MISSIONS Canceled postage stamps are being collected, sorted and processed by Franciscan Friars Andrew Giba, OFM, and Anthony Gancarz, OFM, (of Fr. Cam and Fr. Kennedy s community). The stamps are then sold to a dealer in Green Bay, WI and the proceeds from the sale of the stamps go to support the work of St. Francis Mission in Greenwood, Mississippi and other mission activities. The process is simple there are only two rules: Leave at least a ¼ inch border around the stamp, it may be larger but the minimum is ¼; no non-profit or machine stamps. 6 Page Six The Ascension of the Lord May 20, 2012 PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM: THE BURDEN/ BENEFIT CONVERSATION When you are considering a critical medical treatment, your doctor will want to review with you the benefits and the burdens of that treatment to help you reach the best decision. +Benefits are the results that a specific medical intervention is expected to attain. +Burdens are the physical pain, emotional pain/discomfort/suffering and losses that a specific medical intervention will likely impose. +Risks are the burdens that might result from a specific intervention. When evaluating burdens, sometimes other factors, such as treatment cost and time involvement, are included. Many people like to include the impact of the treatment on their families. Loved ones do suffer at such times. One study found that nearly one out of three family members experiences anxiety and depression during and after an ICU stay. Some patients and families have unrealistic expectations about outcomes. There are many reasons for this, including positive coping mechanisms such as hope, and denial and unrealistic expectations fueled by television and Hollywood. But treatment decisions should be guided by reality. What is the objective of the treatment? Treatment for cure emphasizes restoring function, often at the cost of comfort. Treatment for comfort emphasizes pain management and less intrusion, sometimes at the cost of function. Before making any choice relating to medical treatment or change in the care plan, review the burdens and benefits with your medical team and loved ones in a heart-to-heart conversation. That is likely to lead you to your best decision. Returning families are to return the registration form that was mailed a couple weeks ago to the Religious Education Office by June 15 in order to avoid a late fee. Families who are new to the program should contact the RE Office, 847/ , to set up a time to pick up or fill out paperwork. A copy of each child s baptismal certificate will be needed (if the child was not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish). Tuition for for parishioners (those registered in the parish and who use their envelopes and/or give time to the parish through a ministry) is: $160 one child; $270 two children; $330 three or more children. Tuition for non-parishioners (those not registered in the parish, or who are registered but do not use their envelopes or give time) is: $240 one child; $350 two children; $410 three or more children. Sacrament fees are: First Reconciliation/First Communion -- $50; Confirmation Year I -- $10; Confirmation Year II -- $30. Please note that no one is denied religious education because of a difficulty with finances. RE Classes for Kindergarten are on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Grades 1-Confirmation Year II meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children attend each year as no one year fully covers and forms a child s faith development. Please note that a child must participate in religious education classes, either through an RE Program or a Catholic School, the two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families with older children who have not yet received religious education or sacraments or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call us to discuss options available. Parish School: St. John Brebeuf School BULLETIN SICK LIST The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
