2 Page Two Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 17, 2010 From the Pastor... VISION AND VOICE : An Autumn Reflection I know of no other season that inspires better poetry than Autumn. I think of Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken especially, but not exclusively. It is a haunting reverie of choosing one path in the woods and not another. The experience symbolizes a personal choice in the life of a poet. It has almost universal appeal. We have all come to a fork in the road one that demands a decision. Autumn lends itself to reflection on the past as well as the here and now. Autumn also has a sacramental quality, revealing the pageant of nature and foreshadowing something more harvest-home and the fullness of time. In his tribute to Autumn, John Keats captures that dimension: Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that around the thatch-eaves run The harvest in nature parallels the culmination of the Church's Year of Grace. This week the Roman Calendar observes the Feast of St. Luke. Luke, the Evangelist, is also esteemed as a physician and artist. His vivid Gospel descriptions suggest the keen observation of a diagnostician as well as the sensitive eye of an artist. St. Luke's Feast (October 18) usually coincides with the best Autumn weather. In England, this time is known as St. Luke's Little Summer. Neither too hot nor too cold, it is actually the origin of the much used expression luke warm. Everywhere, even in our contemporary secular society, people are decorating for Halloween. The scary, whimsical sometimes destructive nature of Halloween often obscures the fact that the very name Halloween in Old English means All Hallows (Saints) Eve. The Church recognized the strength of pagan feasts that honored the dead. While stressing the power of evil and fear, the pagan feasts were reinterpreted in the light of Christian Faith. They became a celebration of All Saints and All Souls. The feasts magnificently united the Church Triumphant, the Church Militant and the Church Suffering. How fitting that the theme of harvest in nature should find full expression in God's harvest of holy souls." This radiant and fruitful time of year recalls for me a traditional hymn of the harvest: Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest-home! All be safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied; Come to God s own temple, come; Raise the song of harvest-home! We, ourselves, are God's own field, Fruit unto his praise to yield; Wheat and tears together sown, unto joy or sorrows grown; First the blade and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear: Grant, O harvest Lord, that we, Wholesome grain and pure may be. Frost, Keats poets of vision and our prayers and hymns give voice to what often leaves us speechless the beauty of Creation, the wonder of God Himself! -Fr. Luczak

ISAAC JOGUES St. Isaac Jogues is one of eight North American martyrs, six of whom were priests of the Society of Jesus, and two of whom were their lay assistants. Born in Orleans, France, on January 10, 1607, Isaac Jogues was ordained a priest on July 2, His priesthood, however, was destined to be short. Immediately after his ordination, Isaac left as a missionary for Canada, then called New France. Upon reaching Quebec, he began to work among the Huron Indians. His love for the Indians as children of God was not thwarted by their ridicule of his teachings. On the contrary, he was determined to win their friendship as well as their acceptance of the Christian religion. Isaac Jogues was both a scholar and an athlete. Once he demonstrated his agility as a runner, many Indians became attentive to his teachings. The first six years of his apostolate in the New World resulted in the baptisms of hundreds of Huron Indians. He became the favorite among those Indians eager to learn of the white man's Christian religion. In 1642, on a return journey from Quebec to his mission in the Huron Indian country, Isaac and his companion Rene Goupil were captured by the Iroquois, a tribe allied to the Mohawk Indians. Both missionaries were subjected to torture and mutilation. On September 29, 1642, Rene Goupil was killed by the ax stroke of an Iroquois Indian. Isaac, however, was more fortunate. He was ransomed by the Dutch in During his captivity he converted sixty Indians. Although Isaac Jogues had suffered severely at the hands of the Iroquois, he returned to Quebec to continue his apostolate. Despite the mutilation of his right hand, he was granted a dispensation to say Mass by Pope Urban VIII. Urban's judgment that "it would be shameful for a martyr of Christ not to drink the blood of Christ renewed the zeal of Isaac to work among the Indians. On a peace mission to the Iroquois in 1646, Isaac was again captured by a renegade Mohawk war party, this time with his assistant Jean de la Lande. On October 18, 1646, both missionaries were tomahawked. Their deaths marked the second and third martyrdoms of North American missionaries. At the suggestion of the hierarchies of Canada and the United States, canonization procedures for Isaac Jogues and his fellow martyrs were begun in All eight Jesuit missionaries were proclaimed saints in Together they are called the North American Martyrs. 5 Page Five Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 17, 2010 SPIRITUAL LIFE PARISH PARTICIPATION IN RESPECT LIFE MONTH + Our Day of Prayer in support of the 40 Days For Life Campaign begins at Midnight, October 19, (Monday night going into Tuesday morning)! Along with members of St. John Brebeuf Parish we will keep a peaceful vigil and pray for an end to abortion in our country and for respect for the holiness of all life at the Albany Medical-Surgical Center (which performs late-term abortions), 5086 N. Elston Avenue in Chicago. Even if you did not signup for an hour, you are welcome to come pray anytime during the early morning, daytime, evening or late night. If you cannot go to the facility, perhaps you can set aside some quiet time during that day and unite yourself in prayer spiritually with those who are there. The prayer vigil will continue through October 31 st. Know that your prayer and fasting during these remaining days is a holy work and spiritual blessing to spreading the Gospel of Life! The St. Isaac s Women s Club Community Concerns Commission is sponsoring a clothing drive for the benefit of the Cornerstone Community Outreach. This wonderful center provides shelter and food to the homeless in the Uptown neighborhood. Please bring your clean, usable items before noon on November 7th to the Holy Family Room. The Center is especially in need of men, women, and children's coats, gloves, scarves and hats. They also need blankets, pillows, sheets and towels. St Isaac Jogues Men s Club The Men s Club is looking for new Members. Please come join us for our Annual Octoberfest gathering. Meet new friends, enjoy great food and fellowship. This month Chef Chuck Napravniak will tempt our members with Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of converting Muslims and becoming a martyr. All things are passing; God never changes. But her mother s death when Teresa was fourteen inspired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites, Mary s order, despite her father s objections and her own fragile health. Patience gains everything. Initially, she enjoyed her lax convent s sociability and busyness, but mystical prayer and John of the Cross collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites. Whoever has God, lacks nothing. When her ideals encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace- and humor. Discovered devouring leftovers, she told her mildly scandalized nuns, When I fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat! To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the convent schedule, she retorted: What we really need around here are fewer starry eyes and more strong arms! God alone is enough! We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
