2 Page Two September 2, 2012 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time CHURCH IMPROVEMENT: Observations & Questions (Part II) Last week, I mentioned that I had received a letter from R. R s thoughts on the sanctuary stained glass could not be addressed in a paragraph or two. What R proposed was that the stained glass be retained in the sanctuary at least in part. Do not cover up the light coming through the east window... The beauty of the stained glass is the natural light from God that shines through it - - especially in the morning. R s interpretation of the windows was drawn from Genesis 9: God s Covenant Rainbow to Noah that prefigures Christ s New Covenant. God s divine light shines through his Old Testament Covenant Promise on to the New Covenant Promise - - His Son Jesus the head of our diverse Body on to us His chosen people (through) whom He wants His Light to shine to the whole world! With R s interpretation is a practical observation: I feel that the sanctuary area without the stained glass - - not matter how many lights you install - - would be too dark! Jesus is the Light of the World - - let s keep some expenses down and leave the natural light coming in around the altar area. I would like to respond to R s interpretation of the windows and the more practical issue of light in the sanctuary. INTERPRETATION OF THE WINDOWS. As I read R s description of the stained glass in our sanctuary, it reminded me of the popular carol Do you see what I see? I DO NOT SEE WHAT R SEES. The glass is colorful, but abstract. It represents neither picture nor pattern. What R sees is through a combination of lively faith and imagination. It is subjective. There are people who see Our Lady of Guadalupe in an oil slick or the Crucified Lord in the grain of a piece of wood. There are many other people who see just an oil slick and a piece of wood. A little known author, Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, left us with a much quoted line: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is true...up to a point, but beauty and meaning cannot be totally relative. Beauty can be discerned and judged by its quality and appropriateness. St. Denis rightly said: One may rise to the contemplation of the divine through the senses. R s description of light filtered through colored glass tells me more about R s experience of faith than the objective role of abstract walls of glass. The windows of Chartres, Sainte Chapelle, or those of more contemporary artists like Marc Chagall are works of art that have a value and function that is objective. They may not have universal appeal to every beholder, but that is not what makes them beautiful or appropriate to inspire worship. If I were cynical or flip, I might conclude: De gustibus non est disputandum - - There is no arguing about tastes. But I know that there is less to our windows than meets the eye. I would argue that they leave our Sanctuary out of focus. In Environment and Art in Catholic Worship, a reflection on visibility is pertinent to my argument: The arrangement of the space should consider levels of priority in what is seen, allowing the visual flow from one center of liturgical action to another. Furthermore, the sense and variety of light, artificial or natural, contribute greatly to what is seen. (#50) When I watch the Liturgy from the nave of our Church, the glass walls and ministers together remind me not of a splendid mosaic, but of people standing in front of a neon sign! That is what R did not see, but some of us do. THE PRACTICAL ISSUE OF LIGHT My consultation with lighting professionals leads me to disagree with R s observation, No matter how many lights you install in the Sanctuary, it would be too dark. Artificial light can work! Natural Eastern light has the advantage of rich symbolism. It is as old as the human instinct to be in awe of nature and the Lord of Creation. But, in our worship space, a central focus on the Cross, carefully lit, ought to be a higher priority than a morning sunrise no matter how glorious. Light is not more important than the Lord of Light. We are still considering different options about the windows. I am grateful to R for a prayerful interpretation of the Sanctuary windows and other thoughtful suggestions. - Fr. Luczak

3 Page Three Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2012 If you have a ques on that is relevant to Church Improvement, please submit it in wri ng. Drop it in the Rectory mailbox. Remember that your views are important in the decision process. What we have are facts, expert opinions, a projec on of costs, and a good plan. What we do not have is a decision. What we need, most of all, is your prayerful support. Priceless What would you do for Him Who surrendered His Life So that we may live? What price would you pay? He asks us, not for riches Not pearls, silver, or gold But to simply love one another And in our faith be bold Stretched out on the cross He calls us by name To turn away from our sins And never be the same - Anonymous God Bless the Music Makers Adult choir rehearsals are starting up again. If you are interested in singing with a great group, come join us. We rehearse every Wednesday from 7-9 pm in the choir loft. As always, we look forward to sharing music, laughs and worship together this year. The adult choir sings at the 9:00 am Mass every Sunday. Come join us! Teens and young adults, our 10:30 am choir is calling you. College has called some of our members away. This is a small but mighty group and we need your help to fill in the ranks. We meet on Wednesdays from 6-7 pm in the choir loft and sing at the 10:30 am Mass every week. Rehearsals start on Sept. 5. Your homework assignment? Bring a friend! The music ministry invites students, grades 4-8, to sing in the youth choir. This group rehearses on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 pm in the choir loft. Students in the R.E. program are dismissed directly to their classes. We sing the 12:00 pm Mass once a month. Rehearsals begin Sept. 10. Ringers, let the ringing begin! Anyone interested in joining the bell choir should come on out and try this ministry. It helps if you play the piano or read notes. The bells will meet on Mondays from 7-8:30 pm in the church hall. Our first rehearsal is Sept. 10. Once you put on your gloves, hold your bells, and ring with the group, you ll be hooked. PARISH LIFE TEEN ACTIVITIES All Teens of the parish are invited to the End of Summer Celebration on Saturday, September 15 th! We will start by going to 5:00 Mass and then have a pizza dinner in the Holy Family Room. A dance follows, 6:30-9:00 p.m. There is no charge for this celebration, but we do ask you to bring at least three non-perishable food items (canned fruit is really needed but you can also bring canned soups, vegetables, stews, spaghetti, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, etc.) for our St. Vincent DePaul Ministry Food Pantry. If you or your family have any questions or if you will be coming for the dinner and dance, please call the Religious Education Office at 847/ , or the office at sijre2004@yahoo.com. Support the efforts of the Teen Group as they Walk for Life on Sunday, September 16, to benefit The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. They will begin and end their three mile walk at Our Lady of Victory Church in Chicago. Please stop in the Holy Family Room next weekend, September 8-9, to offer your prayers and good wishes and to give them a donation for the Women s Center. Your gift, combined with the donations they receive from their families, relatives and friends, will help pay for these items: $15 a package of baby diapers; $20 one 3-pak of baby bottles; $45 -- one ultrasound (in a national survey 75% of abortion-bound women who see their baby s ultrasound image decide to KEEP THEIR BABIES!); $100 a car seat; $120 one crib mattress; $175 one baby crib; $275 one baby layette; $750 all of the above to welcome baby into the world. Our goal is to raise, as a group, at least $750. Thank you in advance for your generosity, prayer and encouragement of our teens.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for people who are seeking, or desiring to deepen, a relationship with Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church through prayer, study, service and participation in the faith community. If you, or someone you know, have never been baptized, are a baptized Christian but want to learn how the Catholic Church lives its life in Christ, or are a baptized Catholic but have not received Confirmation and First Communion, and you want more information about the RCIA, please call Dee Stanton at 847/ YEAR OF SUNDAY MASS In today s Mass we hear JAMES urge us: Welcome the word...be doers of the word and not hearers only After hearing the readings for today s celebration of the Mass, how might you, in the next week, be a doer of the word? Be specific. KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME: WALK Do you actually walk at Mass? Yes, in fact, you do. You walk in. You walk out. You walk up for Holy Communion. A few people walk up to bring the gifts to the priest. The priest himself and other ministers walk and move across the sanctuary. There is more movement in the Mass than you might expect to find. But does it mean anything? It does. Walking is a way of getting from one place to another. Walking in the Mass is a sign of our movement. We are going somewhere. We have a destination, and we are on the way. This is what the Second Vatican Council meant when it called the Church the pilgrim people of God, people on the move, people with a destination in God. Each time we celebrate Mass and engage its movements, we remember who we are. And, even more, we recall our holy destination Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MINISTRY HELPS LEANING TOWER YMCA RESIDENTS The St. Vincent de Paul Ministry received a call for assistance from the Leaning Tower YMCA in Niles. Because some of their rooms had become infested with bedbugs, they quickly put professional eradica on regimens in place; however, they found that their housekeeping service was actually spreading the contagion of bedbugs. The bugs would hitch a ride on the housekeepers vacuum cleaners and get transported from infected rooms to uninfected rooms! The YMCA has been advised by professional eradica on companies to stop the usage of vacuum cleaners by their housekeeping staff so that the bedbugs will no longer be uninten- onally transported from one room to the next. They asked us if we could purchase some lightweight vacuum cleaners for their permanent residents (some of whom are clients of SVDP) so that they would be able to vacuum their own rooms. Each vacuum would belong to its assigned room. The YMCA is doing everything in its power to eradicate the bedbug popula on, from spending a fortune on professional eradica on companies to even u lizing bedbug sniffing dogs. Each me new residents move in, however, there is a chance for a new infesta- on. Most of their permanent residents have been referred from shelters or were previously living on the street or in their cars. They are in dire need of our help, since their residents cannot afford to purchase vacuum cleaners on their own and s ll pay for their medica ons, food and room charges. We were able to purchase lightweight vacuums so that even the frailest residents would be able to handle them. Please pray for the residents of the YMCA. If you would like to make a dona on to purchase more vacuums, please do so in a St. Vincent de Paul envelope, located near the doors of the church. Please mark on the envelope, Vacuums and place your dona on in the collec on plate. Here is a le er of thanks from the YMCA. Peace be with you, Your St. Vincent de Paul Ministry

DOERS OF THE WORD KATHERINE WILLIAMS DYLEN WILLIAMS DEBBIE TERZAKIS RUDOLPH PIKULA JOSEPH DE MEO JAMES WERLEIN ELEANOR LUTZ MARY LOU ROMANO The second reading for today begins a five-week series of selections from James, a letter that is classified among the so-called catholic (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one particular community. Today s text offers important advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular, reference is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the first fruits of the new creation. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the word as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become doers of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the works of love, for example, by caring for the orphans and widows in their affliction. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Labor Day originated in 1882 in New York City under the aegis of the Knights of Labor. Congress made it a legal holiday in Observing it this week gives us a good opportunity to reflect on the Catholic Church s social teachings for the last century or so. On May 15, 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Rerum Novarum on the condition of the working classes and labor. In doing so, he initiated a century in which Catholic teaching became more and more involved in the social issues of the day. Unfortunately relegated to the shadows while the bright lights of controversy shine on other issues, Catholic social teaching remains largely unknown to many Catholics. It is the Catholic Church that championed such notions as a fair day s pay for a fair day s work, and continues to uphold the dignity of the human person against attacks from governments and corporations. Nearly every pope since Leo XIII has issued teachings on the subject. Take some time this Labor Day to familiarize yourself with some aspect of the Church s social teachings. In doing so, you will be taking responsibility as a member of the Body of Christ to commit yourself to the care of your neighbor.
