We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - JUNE am - 12 Noon For children in Pre-K (4 yrs.) - 5th Grade Registration will take place after all Masses on the following weekends: May 20 & 21, May 27 & 28 and June 3 & 4 Our VBS theme this Summer is TRACKING MARY: MYSTERIES & MESSAGES. We will explore the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary and the fruits of those Mysteries; Humility, Love, Obedience, Joy and Poverty, in a way that connects with today s youth. As passengers on the Queen of Heaven Express, children will travel to the different stations with Our Blessed Mother to some of the faraway places she appeared; Lourdes, Fatima, England and Ireland. They will discover relevance and beauty through Mary s Messages, and how God sends Mary to lead us closer to Jesus. The passengers will stop at Bible Class, Activities Station, Music, Crafts and Snacks. Confirmation students can acquire their service hours needed for the year by volunteering. Check bulletin for CMSE class if not certified. NEED VOLUNTEERS - Must be CMSE certified. See bulletin for more information. There are sign-up sheets in the Church entrance for both adults and students (6th grade and up) who are interested in helping out. There will be a planning meeting on Wednesday, May 31 at 7 pm in the CCD Center A HOSPITALITY MINISTRY ORIENTATION WITH FATHER EMILIO will be held on Saturday, June 3rd in Church after the First Saturday 8:00 am Mass. 4 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page 4 Orders for the parish s 50th anniversary t-shirt and polo shirts will be taken until May 21st. The design is posted at all three doors of the church and Order forms are in the racks. Prices and sizes are on the forms. The t-shirts are a 50/50 blend and there is a choice of either dark blue or light blue shirt with the design to be printed on the front. The polo shirts are a dry weave in a dark blue color and will have only the parish logo embroidered on the left pocket area. For the polos, please indicate (on form) if you want a men s or women s size. Place completed forms and cash or check (made out to St. Peter s Parish) in an envelope and drop in the collection basket or bring by the parish office during the week. We also congratulate the youth who are receiving Scholarships and wish them all success in college and in their chosen profession. God bless them always. The reception will be immediately after Mass in St. Matthew Hall. ALTAR & ROSARY SOCIETY The Altar & Rosary Society will meet on Monday, May 22 at 7 pm in the K.C. Hall. July 16, July 21, 2017 Location: Deer Creek Camp Deer Creek Camp will be on July 16 July 21, 2017 at Deer Creek Camp located in the Texas Hill Country, along the banks of the Medina River with 110 acres of playing fields. Space is limited. Registration form and entry fee are due by dates listed in brochure or until camp capacity. To Register or FMI call Heath Garcia at (361) Prior to Deer Creek Camp being owned by Jim and Pam, this property was owned and operated by the Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi. For many years, the diocese brought children from the Corpus area to have a special Camp experience. In the late 1990's, changes at the diocesan level led to the Camp being put up for sale, and God opened the door for Deer Creek Camp to be born. However, it was very important to the Behlings that children from Corpus Christi still have the opportunity to have their own "Corpus" experience. Therefore, ever since 1999 one week of the summer has been set aside for "Corpus Week". TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The custom of genuflection is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the when in Rome rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small portion of the Eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or Eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a metasis, toward the altar bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the Eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ s presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence!
