The Order of Deacon has been held in high honor in the Church from the early time of the Apostles. At Mass the Deacon has his own part in proclaiming the Gospel, from time to time in preaching God s Word, in announcing the intentions of the Universal Prayer, in ministering to the Priest, in preparing the altar and in serving the celebration of the Sacrifice, in distributing the Eucharist to the faithful, especially under the species of wine, and from time to time in giving instructions regarding the people s gestures and postures. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB Our parish picnic is scheduled for Sunday, August 16th on the church grounds in Daisytown. Last year we had a nice turnout with a wide selection of salads and desserts. We will have the hot food catered once again and we ask parishioners to bring the extras. If families have corn-hole boards at home, we could have afternoon tournaments on the lawn. Bring lawn chairs and spend the day with our parish family. If there is enough interest, perhaps we could get a bouncy for the little ones. If you have any suggestions for additional activities, please let us know. Our summer season is going way too fast and the thought of another winter like last year is unbearable, so take advantage of this opportunity to relax, eat, and enjoy one another s company. Lists will be placed in the vestibule after the July 4th holiday. Reserve the date! I would also ask parents of our altar servers to please check the lay ministry lists in the vestibule each week. I have not seen some of our servers on the altar for months. I will also begin training new servers closer to the start of another school year, so I would ask you to encourage your sons and daughters to render this valuable service in the celebration of the Eucharist. This ministry is open to all those students entering third grade in the Fall. I still would like to see entire families take up this ministry. Mothers/fathers could be on as lectors/eucharistic ministers and then assist their children in their duties as altar servers. The whole family could be present in the sanctuary for the entire Mass! What a wonderful example that would be for the entire parish. Since I am on a roll, it would also be nice for more persons to join our choir in the Fall. The more voices raised in song can inspire more prayerful worship for all of us. There are no auditions, just a willingness to lend your voice in the praise of God at our liturgies. Try it, you might like it! 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time "And they ridiculed him." So he hung his head in shame and slunk gloomily out the back door? So he pleaded and whined and called them all names? No. Instead, Jesus "put them all out" and went about his business, raising Jairus' daughter from the dead. Jesus wasn't concerned about what others thought. And lest we imagine that everyone around him was constantly worshiping him and adoring his divinity, today's reading reminds us that even in the presence of the Lord, skeptics were a dime a dozen. So should we be surprised if we must deal with a bit of ridicule ourselves? As faithful Christians, we will at times be called to chart a course that doesn't make sense in the eyes of the world. And, yes, some people will say we're crazy. We may be called to take a stand for the unborn or the elderly in a culture that considers life to be expendable. We may be faced with a decision at work that requires us to adhere to an ethical code that our boss thinks is laughable. Perhaps we will have to sacrifice a relationship because of pressures to ignore Christian morality. Or maybe the situation could be as simple as dealing with the smirks that arise when we say a prayer before eating at a restaurant. Whether we face a snicker or blatant discrimination against our religious freedom, we should not flinch or waver when such opposition comes our way. Jesus faced it and so will we. The question is only how we will respond. Today, Jesus gives us an example of calm confidence as he marches forward with his mission. He knew that he was doing the right thing, and that was enough for him. It should be enough for us too. Wally Rozum, Ohio Albina Sweltz HOSPITALIZED Do you know someone who needs prayers? Please contact Debbie Washington at or dlwashi@hotmail.com to place a name on the parish Prayer Chain! Boxes for requests are also located in the vestibules of our worship sites. If you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home please contact the office. The hospital sometimes fails to call and notify us, then Fr. Bob does not know to visit. Thanks for your help. Prayerful remembrance for all serving in the military: Ryan Wood, Army; Nathan Brezovic; Fr. Frantisek Halka, Army; Major David Dietz, Army; Petty Officer Tony Pinkas, Navy Please contact the parish office ( ) if we need to add or remove any of our military personnel from this list. Thank you. Kennywood Trip Agnes Neisner The Kennywood Trip for our youth fish fry workers (at least 4 of the 7 Lenten fish fries) and altar servers is scheduled for Friday, July 17, There are a few seats remaining on the bus for students to invite one guest. These seats will be filled on a firstcome basis by Sunday, July 5. Guests are required to pay the $29 admission to the park. All guests must be noted on the GUEST SIGN UP or call Luci Pribish ( ) to confirm a seat and must have the parental permission slip signed and returned to the parish by Wednesday July 15th. Ques ons?
