Liturgical Reflection When a Catholic dies, the community gathers with the family and friends of the deceased to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend the deceased to God's tender mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the proclamation of the paschal mystery, the dying and rising of the Lord. At death the Christian community is joined together in faith as one Body of Christ to reaffirm in sign and symbol, word and gesture that each believer through baptism shares in the death and resurrection and can look to the day when all the elect will be raised up and united in the kingdom of light and peace. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB This year Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine Day which is associated with love while the season of Lent that begins that same day brings to mind a need for repentance and renewal because we stray from that perfect love manifested by our God, the Creator, for us in the person of Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son. The relationships we form, the love we share, lasts beyond this earthly life, which is marked by the ashes placed upon our foreheads this week. Unfortunately there is a temptation in this practice to simply appear to be doing it right, which can then easily slip into selfrighteousness like the Pharisees of old. This sacramental sign of ashes on our forehead is an admission of our knowledge of our own personal deaths, not only to sin but to life as we know it on this earth. These ashes remind us of our end, when we will be face-to-face with our Creator. But there is also the temptation to keep this practice because we want others to know we went to church but perhaps have no intention of almsgiving, prayer, and fasting for the next 40 days. It is meant to be a symbolic cleansing of the temples of our soul so that the presence of the crucified and risen Lord might be more visible in our daily words and actions. Then on Easter Sunday we are sent forth from the tombs of human sin and selfishness to proclaim that Jesus is risen, that He is alive in our time and place in history through the likes of each of us. In Hebrew, the word for repentance is to turn, like the turning of the earth to the sun as we approach the season of Spring. Ashes can be made only from fire, the utter and nearly complete consumption of a thing into something entirely new. We recall through this ritual how fragile life is, that the refining fire of the Spirit of God will purify us and make us new as we continue our journey to the promised Kingdom. The ashes remind us of our end, when we will be face-to-face with our Maker, who indeed knows our hearts and our actions. At that point we stand alone with the bonds of love we have created throughout our lives on this earth. We have been graced into existence for only a short while. We will return to the earth from which we came, but something of God still remains, something eternal grasps for the infinite which we call our soul. These ashes are signs of such conversion, our promise to transform the ash heaps of destruction into lights of hope and fires of compassion. Though they will disappear tomorrow from our foreheads, my prayer is that they will then find a place in our hearts for the next 40 days. WEEKLY FISH FRIES begin Friday, Feb 16th at both halls. We need plenty of volunteers to insure we continue our tradition of good dinners and service with a smile. It is a lot of work but it can also be fun! HOSPITALIZED Tom Zepka PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. PRAYER CHAIN Do you know someone who needs prayers? Fish Fry Week in Bon Air: Fridays, February 16th-March 23rd G F G P G T!!! Friday morning fish is cut and breaded. Friday afternoon we begin serving at 4PM. We also need extra help after the dinner is completed to pack and store the leftovers, and clean off counters/stove/fryers etc. 6:30PM. Guests are always amazed at the number of parishioners who are actively involved in making these dinners possible. Those remarks also speak volumes about the vibrancy and life of our faith community. Help us through the next seven weeks and we will give you the standard pink slips for unemployment compensation at Easter! Jr./Sr. high students are asked to fulfill their service requirement by assisting at either hall. Make this a part of your Lenten discipline and discover that it can also be an enjoyable experience.
4 Families and the Gospel February 11 Mark 1:40-45 Family life is about decisions. The leper in today s gospel knew this when he said to Jesus. If you will, you can make me clean. Jesus knew this when he said, I do will it. Love is not an emotion. It is a decision to be with and for another person in good times and bad, even when we don t feel like it. One Liners In the sentence of life, the devil may be a comma but never let him be the period. Some people are kind, polite, and sweet, un l you try to sit in their pews. Or if you prefer, I will gladly mail you a copy just let me know. Thanks Kristen Hi my name is Hannah McCombie and I am an 11th grader at Conemaugh Valley. For my individual confirmation service project I will be collecting soda/beer tabs for the Ronald McDonald House at Children s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Ronald McDonald House is a place for families of seriously ill children receiving care from Children s Hospital, to say at with little to no cost. At the Ronald McDonald House the rooms that the families stay at are just like hotel rooms and are equipped with everyday objects the family may need during their stay. By collecting soda tabs the Ronald McDonald House turns the tabs into money by taking them to be recycled. With the money that is created, the Ronald McDonald House can buy food for the families, everyday objects that may be needed by the families or red wagons for the children to get back and forth from the hospital to the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House tries to be a home away from home and a comforting place for the families of seriously ill children to stay at while their child is in the hospital. In the back of the church there will be a red collection box that you can place tabs. I will be collecting the tabs from now until Sunday, March 25, 2018 Thanks Hannah The Catholic Campus Ministry students of Pitt-Johnstown will be going on a mission trip to Germantown, Pennsylvania during the first week in May. Students will spend the week serving in homeless shelters, soup kitchens, schools, nursing and retired priests homes, parks, and many other service facilities. This is the ministry's fourth annual mission trip, and students normally participate. The trip is partially funded by UPJ however, a large portion of the expense falls on the students and on the ministry program. The ministry also takes donations at all times during the year to supplement our many events including three retreats each year and our yearly trip to Washington, DC to attend the March for Life. All donations are welcomed and will be greatly appreciated! Checks can be made payable to UPJ Catholic Campus Ministry or UPJ-CCM. Donations can be mailed to: Pitt-Johnstown Catholic Campus Ministry, 450 Schoolhouse Road, Johnstown, PA Thank you for your support and may God bless you!
