And do His will as one family united in Faith. We will teach, serve, and be an example to the youth of the parish that they will come to a full understanding of Christ and His plan for their lives. We will nurture the gifts and talents of all parish members and use them wisely for the glory of God. We will compassionately implement the Spiritual and Corporal works of Mercy for those in our Parish, Diocese and throughout the world. Through the celebration of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, we affirm our Communion with Christ and each other. All are welcome. Please call the rectory office to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry are to make arrangements at least nine months prior to their wedding date. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! The service begins at 2:00 P.M. Bishop Mark Bartchak will be in attendance. All are invited to participate in this prayer.

3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB In reviewing our Fish Fry worker list for Bon Air for the first Lenten dinner we are lacking volunteers for some very essential positions, without which there will be NO dinner! We have no one for take-out/phone- desk dinners, no one to bus and re-set tables, no host/hostess for seating, no bartender, no cashier. The other positions for the night of the dinner could also use another person or two. Basically we have the same two or three persons doing all the prep-work on Monday and Friday mornings. This is not acceptable and until more parishioners or volunteers come forward, we will not be advertising any Lenten fish fry in Bon Air for Friday, March 3rd. I will make that decision after the weekend of February 18th & 19th since we need to place our orders on Monday, February 20th. It is your decision and I will not accept the blame for the first cancellation or perhaps even the end of the fish fries in Bon Air. It is two weeks and counting! The proverbial ball is now in your hands! On a much more spiritual level, we hear in our Gospel account this weekend the familiar Beatitudes given us by Jesus but unfortunately we often think that kind of behavior and attitude is only for those we call saints. Jesus announces the blessings for those who live the qualities of true discipleship: poor in spirit, mourning loss, meek, seekers of justice, merciful, clean of heart, peacemakers, bearers of insults and persecution. But to be so blessed, so happy, so fortunate, requires letting go of self. In our sharing of God s work of salvation, that is, providing for those in need, this is a blessing in itself that brings unequaled happiness. Our deepest happiness comes not from fulfilling our own needs and wants, but from reaching out to others as God reaches out to us in blessing. Happiness that comes from our own desires and efforts is fleeting; the blessings of God that are showered upon us as we live humbly, justly, and faithfully, are those that last forever. Just a second reminder that if a weekday morning Mass is scheduled in Bon Air and area schools are either delayed or cancelled that day, that liturgy will automatically be transferred to Daisytown. I thank you for your consideration rather than my having to travel down Truman Blvd. and make that turn into Bon Air. If the Mass intention for that day happens to be for a family member or has been requested by you, rather than have you travel to Daisytown, which could be equally as dangerous for you, I will reschedule that intention for another date and use a Mass intention from an estate in which there are no living relatives. FISH FRY FEB. 3RD DAISYTOWN 4PM - 7PM Fish Fry held in Daisytown this Friday February 3rd. Obviously, we need many people who will volunteer their time and talent to continue to provide quality meals for which we have earned a very good reputation! Thursday, Feb. 2nd fish is cut and packed. This process takes approximately two hours beginning at 8:00AM. It is also time to clean the shrimp. Again this process can be done in 2 hours if we have enough help. Thursday, Feb. 2nd at 6:00PM we will begin baking for the dessert counter. Friday morning, Feb. 3rd 8AM, is when we bread the shrimp & fish, cut cabbage and prepare the cole slaw. Friday afternoon we begin serving at 4PM. We also need extra help after the dinner is completed at 6:30PM to pack and store the leftovers and setup the Religious Education classrooms for Sunday morning. WE NEED YOU! NEW VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!! If you have never worked the dinners we would be more than happy for you to join the ranks and share your culinary/serving skills with us. It actually is an enjoyable experience most of the time. The hospital may take your church information, but it does not always get put in the computer to notify us, then Fr. Bob does not know to visit. This has happened a few times in the last month. In today s competitive world, many people do not see justice and humility as virtues to acquire. Yet Jesus makes a big point of giving us the beatitudes as the blueprint to follow for our lives. Being poor in spirit, meek, thirsting and hungering for righteousness, being merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers are all hallmarks of the true disciple and a child of God. After doing all these things, however, the true disciple must be prepared for persecution. Are you really ready to become a true disciple?

4 Families & the Gospel January 29 Mt 5:1-12a It is in our family where we learn to be merciful and comforting to others. The Beatitudes of the Kingdom of God begin at home and depend on you. Parents lead the way. WINTER HEADACHES: The current procedure for the last few years remains in effect when the Conemaugh Valley School District is on a delay OR cancelled because of weather and a Mass has been scheduled on that day in Bon Air, then the Mass is moved to Daisytown. Sacraments Class Offered (2 Locations) This 8 week course will focus on an understanding of the Sacraments today. Participants will study the post Vatican II theologies of Baptism, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Sacrament of Healing, Marriage, Holy Orders and the central mystery of our faith, the Mass. The course is being offered at 2 locations this January, Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Seton Suite, Altoona; Msgr. Robert Mazur, instructor and St. Michael Church Hall, St. Michael; Father D. Timothy Grimme, instructor. The cost of registration and material, which includes a book on each sacrament, is $65.
