And do His will as one family united in Faith. We will teach, serve, and be an example to the youth of the parish that they will come to a full understanding of Christ and His plan for their lives. We will nurture the gifts and talents of all parish members and use them wisely for the glory of God. We will compassionately implement the Spiritual and Corporal works of Mercy for those in our Parish, Diocese and throughout the world. Through the celebration of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, we affirm our Communion with Christ and each other. All are welcome. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! January 22 is the day of the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade (1973), the Church in America prays for the violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee to the right to life. Members of the Diocese are encouraged to go to Mass on this day, pray the rosary, the chaplet of Divine Mercy, fast and abstain, and join the Altoona-Johnstown family in praying the following: O God, who adorn creation with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives in your image and likeness, awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of human life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. In a time when the Sacrament of Marriage is not celebrated as often as in preceding decades, the Church holds up the holiness and dignity of the sacramental covenant between a man and a woman. The matrimonial covenant, by which the two spouses establish a lifelong partnership between themselves, derives its force and strength from creation as proclaimed in the Book of Genesis. And for the Christian faithful it is raised up to a higher dignity, since it is numbered among the Sacraments of the new covenant. CHOIR PRACTICE We are taking a short winter break from prac ce. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB Lent begins on March 1st so I am giving fair warning about the Fish Fries in Bon Air. Beginning the weekend of January 21st & 22nd worker lists will be placed in both worship sites since many people in the parish a end Mass at both sites on any given weekend. Deadline for signing list is Sunday, February 5th for the first Fish Fry that is scheduled on March 3rd. There will then be a mee ng in Bon Air hall on Thursday, February 9th following the 6:30P.M. Mass to determine if we have enough workers to fill the various posi ons in the kitchen, dining room, and dishwashing areas for the Fish Fry. If we do not have sufficient workers to fill those posi ons on any given Friday of Lent, the dinner will be cancelled the weekend before the scheduled date of the dinner. This will be determined on a weekly basis. We have an excellent reputa on in the community and I will not allow the dinner to go down in flames. It is in your hands and I will not take the blame if those dinners come to an end. Our high school students are also expected to lend a helping hand but with involvement in many spor ng events on Friday evenings, many mes this is not possible. When this is not the case, we do expect that you will help with this event in our parish, for you are the future hope of this faith community. Another need is a thorough cleaning of the kitchen in Bon Air. It has been suggested we have a professional cleaning company do this but I believe our own parishioners could do a be er and more thorough job simply because of your pride in our building. We have contracted this job in the past and I was not impressed with the results. You have a personal investment and pride in the parish and with enough help, I am certain this is not beyond our capability. It was your ancestors who built this beau ful structure and this is our opportunity to con nue that tradi on of pride in what has already been accomplished and what we might do in our me and place in history to con nue to always seek to be be er and ever more vibrant for the next genera on of believers. This will also be a topic for discussion at the mee ng on Thursday. I would ask all who are interested in maintaining our good reputa on in the area to please make every effort to give your input at this important mee ng. Finally a reminder: If area schools are cancelled or delayed because of weather condi ons and there is a weekday Mass which was scheduled in Bon Air for that morning, please note that it will be transferred to Daisytown. Thank you!. HOSPITALIZED Alexis Kane If you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home please contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but it does not always get put in the computer to notify us, then Fr. Bob does not know to visit. This has happened a few times in the last month. Thank you. 3 rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME He called them, and immediately they le their boat and their father and followed him. Peter, Andrew, James, and John s lives would never be the same. They were going about their usual business fishing on the Sea of Galilee when Jesus approached them and said, Come a er me. And that s just what they did. At once they le their nets and followed him. Such a quick response to such a radical request! What compelled these men to leave their livelihood to follow the Lord? His promise to them was that he would make them fishers of men. Perhaps they thought that promise sounded fabulous. But it seems more likely that it was Christ himself who drew the men. There must have been something u erly a rac ve about him, and completely trustworthy. Otherwise, it seems unbelievable that these men would have been so quick to respond to his call. This compelling man is the same Christ who calls us. We hear his voice in a different way, of course, through the Church and through the Bible, through his Spirit in our hearts, but it is nonetheless the same Jesus of Nazareth who asks us to follow him. Have we allowed ourselves to be drawn by his voice? Are we open to a real encounter with the Lord who changes lives? If our rela onship with Jesus does not transform us, if it does not change us into different, be er people moment by moment and day by day, then chances are that we are not truly encountering him. He is too powerful to be inconsequen al. It might take some courage and commitment to come into authen c contact with the Lord, but when we do, our lives will never be the same.

4 Families & the Gospel January 22 Mt 4:12-23 When Jesus called his disciples, they came immediately. Parents wish their children would respond as quickly, but they don t. Children grow slowly into responsibility. It s a process like walking, not done immediately but in small steps. Parenting demands patient encouragement. WINTER HEADACHES: The current procedure for the last few years remains in effect when the Conemaugh Valley School District is on a delay OR cancelled because of weather and a Mass has been scheduled on that day in Bon Air, then the Mass is moved to Daisytown. Thank you for your understanding in this ma er. SIGHT & SOUND We are checking to see if there is an interest in going back to see Jonah. We had a full bus back October 2012 for this show. Tenta vely the bus would leave Daisytown at 9:30AM and the show would be at 3PM followed by dinner at Millers Smorgasbord. Es mated cost $110 Adult/$70 Children, includes bus, show & dinner. Sacraments Class Offered (2 Locations) This 8 week course will focus on an understanding of the Sacraments today. Participants will study the post Vatican II theologies of Baptism, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Sacrament of Healing, Marriage, Holy Orders and the central mystery of our faith, the Mass. The course is being offered at 2 locations this January, Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Seton Suite, Altoona; Msgr. Robert Mazur, instructor and St. Michael Church Hall, St. Michael; Father D. Timothy Grimme, instructor. The cost of registration and material, which includes a book on each sacrament, is $65.
