3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB This weekend the Church celebrates the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, but before we simply dismiss it as a mystery beyond our understanding, perhaps we might gain some new insight that may help us better appreciate this doctrine of our faith. It was St. Patrick who chose the shamrock, common to the Irish nation, to represent the image of the Trinity three leaves on one sprig, representing three persons in one God. Of course, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is much more than a sprig, and the relationship between the persons of the Trinity is more complex and subtle than just three leaves on one stem. The early Church Fathers used the image of the sun to speak of this mystery, with the image of the sun as the Father, the light coming forth from the sun as Jesus, our Savior, and the heat of the sun as the heat, the warmth of the sun representing the Holy Spirit. Our Gospel scene on this feast is after Easter in Galilee. According to Matthew, this is the first and only appearance of the risen Jesus to his disciples, and they quite naturally are filled with doubt at the appearance of their Teacher and Lord. They receive from Him what has been referred to as the Great Commandment - Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Based on this, those initial disciples made other disciples through baptism, who then made more disciples by baptism, and so on, until our very day in history. This discipleship founded upon our own baptisms into the life of the Trinity is much more powerful than a shamrock, or even the sun itself. We are those disciples now sent forth in our time and place in human history to proclaim the good news of the promise of eternal life by our own baptisms. The risen Christ calls each of us to a new awareness of God s loving presence in every moment and experience of our daily lives; to mirror, as disciples of Jesus, the Gospel of reconciliation and justice; to embrace and be embraced by God s Spirit of love and mercy enabling us to live our lives in humble, joyful gratitude. Next weekend we celebrate the great feast of Corpus Christi, the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Our risen and ascended Lord is present in our celebration of every Eucharist and we are not sent forth on our own to proclaim the good news of our salvation either. May we be the disciples of Jesus in our time and place in history who are now sent forth as His chosen messengers, who indeed have every reason to rejoice and be glad, because even in our dying we will be reborn to eternal life, a promise signed and sealed in the blood of Jesus if we but follow in His way. Catholic Ministry Story 100% of your gift supports 14 ministries like Fulton County Catholic Mission. Tucked away in the mountainous, rural region of Fulton County, our Catholic faith lives and breathes evangelization at St. Stephen s Church in McConnellsburg. It is the only Catholic Church in Fulton County and the home base for the outreach mission that was established in Through the works of only two Sisters of the Carmelite Community of the Word Sister Margie Monahan and Sister Martha Burbulla the Catholic mission helps those in dire need with rent and utilities assistance, food and lodging, clothing, and special projects to benefit children and their families. More than 1,645 individuals and families have received aid since July A story of Faith, Hope & Charity Two brothers and one pair of shoes. We often receive calls from schools for help with students who are in need of clothing, coats or shoes. This past December, a teacher called us about two brothers who shared shoes. One would wear a semi-good pair and the other wore a worse pair and they would trade off each day. It was very cold. With help from the Mission, both boys received new shoes and boots. The teacher said they were so happy to receive them. We hear of many children who have very little and not very good lives at home. God truly blesses them through us and us through them. They have taught us that acts of kindness can do so much, said Sr. Margie. Your support today of the Fulton County Catholic Mission will help the Sisters continue their works of service. They are an instrument of God s love to all in need. By drawing the poor and fragile close, we are also provided the moments to encounter the God we seek. Pribish Sunday Masses in Daisytown are at 10AM for the summer beginning June 3rd Holy Trinity Sunday 5/27 This feast calls our attention to the mystery of the Trinity, the Father, Son, and Spirit in relationship to one another. Our God is a god of relationships, and being made in his image we, too, are a people in relationship to others. We are in relationship not only to others but to the persons of the Trinity. By baptism, we are brought into their family of love! Today might be a good day to examine the quality of our relationships with each other. Are they relationships built on mutual respect and self-giving? The Trinity can be a model for us of what our ties to others should be like. Have each family member describe the relationship which is most important in his or her life. Pay special attention to the way you make the sign of the cross and think about the meaning of it when you use it this week. Reprinted from ORDINARY TIMES- Rituals and Traditions for Families from Pentecost to Thanksgiving, published by The Family Life Office.
