Please call the rectory office to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry are to make arrangements at least nine months prior to their wedding date. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! First, Christ is present in the very assembly of the faithful who has gathered in his name. Next, he is present in his word, sacred scripture, proclaimed and broken open. Also, he is present in the person of the ordained minister. Finally, and above all, Christ is present in the Eucharistic elements of his very Body and Blood. In a way that is completely unique, the whole and entire Christ, God and man, is substantially and permanently present in the Blessed Sacrament. For my individual Confirmation Project I would like to do a parish collection for Distinctive Human Services. Distinctive Human Services is a non-profit organization in Johnstown that has many of their clients residing in our local Nursing Homes that cannot afford everyday necessities. Items that are needed include: Socks Pajamas (sizes L and XL) Sweatpants (sizes L and XL) Shirts/ Sweatshirts (sizes L and XL) Shampoo/Body wash Puzzles Coloring Books/ Crayons Nail polish During the month of February, I will place collection boxes in the back of both worship sites marked DHS Donations to collect these items. Thank you, Megan. MEETING Save the date Tues., Feb 19th, 7PM in BA hall St. Barnabas Fish Fry Meeting Fish Fry volunteers should attend this meeting. We need to see how many we will have for the Fish Fry Prep & Dinner Services. 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich? who are filled now? who laugh? when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor? you who are now hungry? when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid! Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future. This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to remember God and lean on His mercy and grace?

3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB March 6 th will mark the beginning of another season of Lent. Just as we hopefully prepare ourselves for Christmas or any special occasion, we begin planning long before the event itself arrives. Now would be a good time to begin thinking of what we might do in preparation for the penitential season of Lent. It is a season of prayer and self-denial but often the sacrificial offering we make has nothing to do with our relationship with God or others. I need to lose a few pounds, so I will give up candy for Lent. I need to take better care of my body so that I look better and can buy new clothes. The list could go on and on, but those resolutions have little or nothing to do with this penitential season. We need to deepen/improve our relationship with Jesus, our Lord and Savior. He gave His very life for love of us on the wood of the cross as He entrusted His ministry of proclaiming the good news of our salvation in our time and place in human history. The message is that if we but follow in His way on our earthly journeys, even death itself will be vanquished by His promise of eternal life. It begins within the circle of family and friends through words of encouragement or the gift of forgiveness. It entails a time and place for daily prayer. Even Jesus needed time alone with His Father in prayer. How much more do we need to add to our busy schedules each day, quality time alone with Him. Lent begins on March 6 th with the sign of ashes on our foreheads. Not only a reminder of our own mortality but a promise of new life if we but follow in His way on our earthly journeys to that Kingdom. Some of the most difficult things we might do in this approaching season is offering the gift of forgiveness to someone from whom we may be estranged for whatever reason. Pride might keep us from being reconciled but if we make an honest effort, there is a possibility that both can be made whole and begin anew. Even if that not be the case, each can then go their separate way with new hope for the future. A dying to self can be very painful but a letting go also frees us to start anew. Now that is what Easter is all about! EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP When I was a child, I often thought of the Church as something mystical and supernatural. I wasn't wrong in my understanding of the Body of Christ, for surely the Church has these characteristics. However, even though we speak about the foundation of all we are as Church being the "mystery of Christ," Jesus became a man so that supernatural element could break into the natural world in a profound way. What we once could not see, we now see. What we saw as a God in a distant place now dwelt among us. It is one of the aspects of Catholicism that I have grown to appreciate the most as I have matured: for a Catholic, the supernatural is natural. The communion of saints is heavenly and earthly at the same time. The Beatitudes instruct us about this reality. Pope Francis reminds us that holiness is "not about swooning in mystic rapture." Holiness is about living in the real world and doing extraordinary things with our ordinary lives. Our stewardship way of life consists of actions in the natural world that have extraordinary repercussions. Do not ever take your simple actions of generosity and love for granted. As disciples called to a life of stewardship, we participate in something more profound than what we can see. We are blessed to be called to follow Jesus, and we bring blessing to all those with whom we choose to share ourselves. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS HOSPITALIZED PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. Catholic Education Fund Hope for the Future draws from the opening speech Pope Francis gave at the Synod on Young People in October Our Holy Father state, We need to rediscover the reasons for our hope and, above all, to pass them on to young people who are thirsting for hope. As the Second Vatican Council affirmed: We can justly consider that the future of humanity lies in the hands of those who are strong enough to provide coming generations with reasons for living and hoping (Gaudium et Spes, 31) We hope for our you people in Catholic Education because it offers an education that combines Catholic faith and teachings with academic excellence. So far we have collected $100 to help financially qualified students attending our area s Catholic grade schools, middle school or Bishop McCort. We continue to welcome additional gifts. 4 Families and the Gospel February 17 Luke 6:17, Don t look very far when you hear today s gospel speak of poverty, hunger, sorrow or exclusion. These things happen in families. Children feel insulted when they are constantly criticized. Spouses hunger for affection. Grandparents feel excluded by divorce and custody decisions. Parents weep because they feel alienated from their children. In The Community: St. Francis of Assisi MARDI GRAS will take place on Saturday, February 23, 2019! CARMEL, ALTOONA The fourth concert in our series will take place on Sunday, February 24th at 3 pm, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 8th Avenue & 11th Street, Altoona. Mr. Nicholas Schmelter will be the guest organist. Nicholas received his Masters Degree in Organ Performance from Central Michigan University. He is a highly sought after organist and choral accompanist and currently serves as Director of Worship and Congregational Life at First Presbyterian Church of Caro, Michigan. A free will offering will be taken to benefit the Pipe Organ Campaign. All are welcome to attend. Pasta Delight & Basket Party The Saint John Gualbert Mission Travels are preparing a delicious Spaghetti Dinner on March 3, 11 AM to 2 PM, Adults: $8, Children 5-10: $5, Children less than five eat free. ADULT ENRICHMENT CLASSES The 8 week class Christian Prayer and Spirituality is being offered at two locations. Deacon Michael Russo will be teaching Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 PM beginning March 5th at St. Patrick School, Johnstown. Sr. Marilyn Welch, CCW will be teaching Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 PM beginning March 13th at St. Catherine of Siena, Duncansville. The 10 week class Church History is being offered at Most Holy Trinity, Huntingdon beginning Tuesday, March 5th from 6:30-8:30 PM. This class is being taught by Deacon Donald Gibboney. Preferably the individuals would live in either Daisytown or Bon Air and would be available on weekends prior to the evening Masses on Saturday and the morning Masses on Sunday.
