With the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, a mystery is again revealed. God is present in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Another revelation is made. This Jesus is indeed God's beloved Son and the Father is well pleased. With the Baptism of the Lord, all baptisms are confirmed. We have entered into the waters of rebirth. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB HOSPITALIZED As a Church we celebrate this weekend the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. The obvious question is why would the Son of God need to be baptized if He is the long-awaited Messiah? John s mission is to proclaim that one mightier than himself is coming. John s mission is to prepare people for this event by proclaiming the need for repentance, but the ministry of Jesus will far surpass his baptism of water, as He will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. The symbolism is intended to stress that the ministry of Jesus will have purifying characteristics that far surpass the mission of John the Baptist. For the most part, we were baptized as infants to be reborn as the beloved sons and daughters of God. It is for this reason that the Church celebrates the sacrament of Confirmation at a later age when we are better able to understand our mission to go forth and proclaim the good news of our salvation to the world. The Christmas season officially ends after this feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We are now the ones sent forth to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who still live in darkness, not literally but spiritually. The public ministry of Jesus begins with His baptism. For the most part our public ministry was marked by our desire to be confirmed in the faith. Unfortunately, many of our young people see this sacrament as a kind of graduation rather than the beginning of their missionary journey as disciples of the Lord in our time and place. It is only when we embrace, live, and move into that reality that we are ready to go forth, following the footsteps of Jesus to love and serve others. With this feast, our Church calendar tells us we return to Ordinary Time. I m not convinced that this is an appropriate title for this liturgical season. How can anything be ordinary as we gather around the Table of the Lord every week, and for some, every day of the year? We are the ones commissioned every time we gather around the Table of the Lord to go forth and proclaim the good news of our salvation. Now that is a new year resolution that we all need to make in 2019! PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. Call Everyday Stewardship -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS What have been the most significant moments in your life? You probably celebrate your birthday every year, so the day you were born must be pretty important. How about elementary, high school, or college graduations? Hopefully you do something special on or around your wedding anniversary if you are married. Do you have children? The birth of each child is probably near the top on the list of moments you will never forget. Then there are the sad moments of life: deaths, breakups, and tragedies. As you reflect on all these moments, you can see that you would not be who you are today without having experienced them. Of course as a Christian, you have one moment in time that has had an even greater impact on you and perhaps it didn't even come to mind: your Baptism. You might say you don't remember it because you were an infant. Perhaps you do not even know the date it took place. You might not feel like it has had much impact on you at all. However, it has made all the difference. Whether you feel the difference or not, on that day you were made a new creation in Jesus Christ. You were marked for Him with an indelible mark that no one can remove, not even you. On that day, you inherited a tradition and lineage of faith that has changed the face of the earth. Today, that baptismal grace beckons you to a real and substantial relationship with the One whose name was invoked on that day. It also calls you to respond with a stewardship way of life, where your gifts make a difference and glorify God. If today is the day you start taking all this seriously, you get to add a new moment to your list. Sida Unity. What does "unity" mean? For those of us who claim Christ as our model of living and savior of humanity, it means we are one. This year the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has as its theme the Scripture citation 2 Corinthians 5: The first line contains our mission statement... "For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore all have died." If that is not a mandate for unity, then there is none. We are one in the death of Christ and therefore live in unity with all other Christians. God, who are unity in three holy persons--father, Son, and Holy Spirit-- you have called us to live in peace with all people. You have also called us to work toward unity in purpose to spread the Gospel to all nations. Graciously give us the courage and strength to work toward unity, and act toward each other as brothers and sisters. We ask this in the unity of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
