Please call the rectory office to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry are to make arrangements at least nine months prior to their wedding date. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! If you are moving into, within, or out of the Parish, please call the Rectory Office and let us know. In the early 1500s at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Milan, Italy, Forty Hours Devo on began probably as a commemora on of the forty hours that Christ s body lay in the tomb between his death and resurrec on. By the 1700s the form of the devo on was codified for the churches of Rome. Forty Hours Devo on was first approved for the diocese of Bal more in 1857 and extended to all the dioceses of the United States in The Second Va can Council encouraged the prac ce of solemn annual exposi on in every parish. For my individual Confirmation Project I would like to do a parish collection for Distinctive Human Services. Distinctive Human Services is a non-profit organization in Johnstown that has many of their clients residing in our local Nursing Homes that cannot afford everyday necessities. Items that are needed include: Socks Pajamas (sizes L and XL) Sweatpants (sizes L and XL) Shirts/ Sweatshirts (sizes L and XL) Shampoo/Body wash Puzzles Coloring Books/ Crayons Nail polish During the month of February, I will place collection boxes in the back of both worship sites marked DHS Donations to collect these items. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB We are now only a few days from the month of February, which is the shortest month of the calendar year, and thus far winter has not been unbearable. Our season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6th. Even though we still have the month of February to endure, with the penitential season beginning later this year, we can also hope that by the end of Lent the season of Spring will be in full bloom by April 21st. I will also be recruiting new altar servers in our Sunday religious education classes. This is open to all students and I promise that those who accept the invitation will also have a much better view of the altar rather than looking at a person s back in the pew in front of you. I also ask parents to encourage your children to come forward for this ministry. In our Gospel account this weekend Jesus goes to the synagogue in Nazareth as He prepares for His earthly ministry. Not only were they places of worship but also schools of learning. We also need to be immersed in the word of God in order to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to those held captive by the things of this earth rather than the promise of God, that of an eternal life and the perfection of love in His promised kingdom of peace. Following the Babylonian exile, the Israelites were gradually allowed to return to their homeland, only to find Jerusalem in ruins. The walls that once had protected the city were no longer standing. It was the prophet Nehemiah who led the restoration efforts so that they might once again dwell in safety and begin the task of restoring their homes and the temple. After having completed that practical necessity, Ezra read to them from the Torah to remind them of who they are. They are the people of God, His beloved sons and daughters. Because of this they are called from their desolation and mourning to rejoice in the Lord and thus will regain their spiritual strength that was lost in the exile. We too can become a people in exile when the things of this world begin to diminish our relationship and our reliance upon the grace and mercy of our God. All the material possessions that brought us joy for a time in this life, we will leave behind in our dying. We call ourselves as a church the Body of Christ. But it is only when we work together as His beloved sons and daughters in this life that we will see, even in many small ways, that kingdom of justice, peace, and joy in our time and place in human history. Just imagine the perfection of all that is good and beautiful in this life, but when we hopefully arrive at our heavenly home, it is so much more than just perfect, it is also forever! FISH FRY F. 1 M 1 D F 4PM - 7PM Fish Fry held in Daisytown this Friday February 1st. Obviously, we need many people who will volunteer their time and talent to continue to provide quality meals for which we have earned a very good reputation! We expect this to be very busy since we did not have any fall fish fries! Thursday, Jan. 31st fish is cut and packed. This process takes approximately two hours beginning at 8:00AM. It is also time to clean the shrimp. Again this process can be done in 2 hours if we have enough help. Thursday, Jan. 31st at 5:30PM we will begin baking for the dessert counter. Friday morning, Feb. 1st 8AM, is when we bread the shrimp & fish, cut cabbage and prepare the cole slaw. Friday afternoon we begin serving at 4PM. We also need extra help after the dinner is completed at 6:30PM to pack and store the leftovers and setup the Religious Education classrooms for Sunday morning. WE NEED YOU! NEW VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!! If you have never worked the dinners we would be more than happy for you to join the ranks and share your culinary/serving skills with us. It actually is an enjoyable experience most of the time. L F F M 8 B L!!! HOSPITALIZED PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. 4 Families and the Gospel January 27 Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 In today s gospel Jesus was praised by all except at home in Nazareth where the eyes of all were intently on him. Acceptance can be hard to find at home due to unreal expectations. Jesus challenges us to proclaim liberty to anyone oppressed or captive by our expectations. We need help on the weekends to clear snow from the sidewalks at both worship sites. High school students could use this opportunity for service hours for the religious educa on program. Preferably the individuals would live in either Daisytown or Bon Air and would be available on weekends prior to the evening Masses on Saturday and the morning Masses on Sunday.
