Prayer before Christ the Lord sacramentally present in the reserved Eucharist extends the union with Christ that the faithful have reached in the reception of Holy Communion at Mass. Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament renews the covenant that in turn moves the faithful to maintain by their way of life what they have received through faith. There is great spiritual strength in placing oneself prayerfully in the presence of the reserved Sacrament. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB We are nearing the end of our Lenten season, as next weekend is Palm Sunday. This has even caught me off guard. I guess it is the old adage that as we age, time goes much faster than when we were children. St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians tells us that he counts everything else in his life as loss compared to the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord. Perhaps the modern version might be that in our dying moments we will not say, Gee, I wish I had spent more time at the office. Throughout this time of Lenten fasting and prayer, our intention hopefully has been to loosen the hold that material things can sometimes have over us, and to focus on what gives our life on this earth its true meaning and purpose, which is our relationship with Jesus. In our Gospel account for this 5 th Week of our Lenten season, Jesus takes what could have been an act of violence in the stoning of the adulterous woman and turns it into a forgiving and loving encounter with Him. The scribes and Pharisees were guilty of pride and anger disguised as religious piety. Every time we pray the Lord s Prayer, particularly when we say, Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, we are given the opportunity to bring our misery before the Father, whose name is mercy. Within the violence of the crucifixion, the infinite love of Jesus turns it into a moment of forgiveness. Hopefully, as we are about to enter the holiest week of the Church year next weekend with Palm Sunday, we are asking for the grace to become the light that is stronger than darkness, the love that is stronger than hatred, and the life that is stronger than death. In his most recent encyclical, Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis confronts his critics who argue that too much mercy is wrecking the institutional Church. Francis insistence that he too is a sinner, unable to judge others, is a shocking challenge to an often-juridical church. But it also preserves a radical and unsettling revelation of our God, whose unconditional love is the heart of the good news for all of us. Dear Parishioners, The parish council of SS Gregory & Barnabas is searching for a chairperson or chairperson's who are interested in being in charge of the parish fish fries in Daisytown after this Lenten season. Any interested individual please give your name to the parish council and someone will be in touch. Thanks, Parish Council HOSPITALIZED Maryann Corbaci PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help.
