Please call the rectory office to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry are to make arrangements at least nine months prior to their wedding date. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! Liturgical Reflection Following the blessing and giving of rings, a hymn or canticle of praise may be sung by the whole community. The Celebration of Matrimony concludes with the Universal Prayer. The ritual offers two options. In the absence of the deacon, the couple may choose someone to pray these intercessions. Also, the couple may create their own intercessions along with the suggested petitions in the rite. Perhaps there are family members or friends who are sick or in the military, or any need that invites prayer could be added to the Universal Prayer. The priest gives the invitation to prayer and prays the closing to the General Intercessions. Order of Celebrating Matrimony, Numbers 69, 103A, 135, and Liturgy Office, Altoona-Johnstown Diocese Everyday Stewardship Sometimes when I ask one of my children about who they were with or about a classmate at school they answer me with, You don t know them. Apparently, since I do not know him or her personally, I do not need to know the person s name. I may not know this person but I do know that he or she exists in the everyday life of one of my children. If my children don t share with me anything about their friend or classmate, I can only assume he or she has no great impact on my sons or daughter s daily lives. Of course, sometimes the response I get is simply my teen being a typical teen. Has Jesus had a significant impact on your life? Do you know Jesus personally? If someone asked you about him what would you say? My children respond the way they do to me because they are still young and immature. However, some adults are immature as well: immature in faith. We shy away from any discussion of God in our lives and we rarely share our faith. Most days we will not be asked the question, Who is Jesus? But we will be in situations where we are being called to share a little bit about ourselves. If Jesus has truly changed our lives and we never seem to want to share something about him with others, they may as well assume that he has had no real impact on us. On the other hand, if we are mature disciples in Jesus Christ, I suspect that others can t help but know about the great friend we have in him. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB Our religious education program will begin Sunday, October 8th. Weekly attendance is expected but I also must remind parents that attendance at the weekend Masses is also expected of all students in the parish. I see many getting into their family cars immediately after classes are dismissed on Sunday morning and I can only assume that they went to Mass either on Saturday evening or 8A.M. in Bon Air. Religious education classes do not take the place of the Church s requirement that all Catholics attend Mass either on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. It is still considered a serious sin to not fulfill that obligation unless there is a grave reason why attendance was not possible on that particular weekend, and one should not come forward to receive Holy Communion until they have gone to confession to admit that through their own fault or neglect they failed to fulfill that obligation. I would also like to invite students in grades 3-12 to become servers at the altar on weekends. You have a great view, best seats in the house, but you also render a valuable service to the priest and the people in the pews by assisting at the altar, which then allows the Mass to proceed with dignity and order but also promotes better participation among the congregation. With the start of the religious education program this Fall, I will be visiting all the classes, grades 3-11, in search of enthusiastic individuals who would be inspiring leaders for the congregation in the celebration and active participation of the Mass, which is the prayer of all God s people. Parents, encourage your children to accept the invitation to become more involved in the Eucharistic celebration when heaven and earth meet and we join with the angels and saints in heaven in giving praise to an awesome God who loves us beyond our imagining. I would also welcome individuals who would like to accept the ministry of either Lector or Eucharistic Minister. It is not difficult and I would be more than happy to give the necessary instruction, which is not difficult or burdensome in any way. Also our choir would love to have more members join with them in singing the praises of God in our weekend liturgies. I would be the first to admit that I do not have a good singing voice but I do it anyway and it makes me more joyful despite the fact that it might make others more miserable. Together we can always become better! LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We all know the given answers to the ques on: who is Jesus? Son of God, Son of Man, Messiah, Lord, and the Christ are some that immediately come to mind. But, who do you say that Jesus is? Who we need or want Jesus to be becomes the key to unlocking a rela onship with God. For some, Jesus is just a prophet, a wise man, or an inspira onal figure in history. These labels keep Jesus in the past and prevent us from really having a living, vibrant rela onship with him. If Jesus is more than this to you, then who is he and what purpose does he serve in your life? Thank you. 21 st Sunday in Ordinary Time And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church. Simon got a new name after his profession of faith. As soon as he declared to Jesus, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus renamed him with a title that means rock. And with that name he gave Peter the mission to be a solid foundation upon which he would build his church. Not Peter s church. Not James or Paul s church. Not Martin Luther s or John Calvin s or anybody else s. This is Jesus church, the church of Christ himself, that we call the Catholic Church. So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority in the church the keys to the kingdom of heaven to a human leader. Peter was thus established as the first pope. He exercised a special kind of headship, within the community of the apostles and the church at large, because Jesus gave him the power to do so, not because Peter claimed it for himself. And so too every pope since, right down to our Holy Father today, exercises this unique leadership within the Church. What a gift this is to us! Jesus knew well the human tendency to squabble and disagree, to argue and compete. He knew that the church would be prone to all of this because of her members, and that providing a final voice of authority, saying in effect that the buck stops here would be helpful for maintaining unity. As Catholics, even in spite of the differing opinions and perspectives that are manifest in the Church, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of identity and belief thanks in large part to the papacy. Today, may we give thanks for the pope and pray for him as he strives to lead all of us closer and closer to Christ Catholic Ministries Drive Please note the 2017 Catholic Ministries is taking the place of the Annual Catholic Appeal.
