Please call the rectory office to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: ouples planning to marry are to make arrangements at least nine months prior to their wedding date. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The atholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy ommunion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! The infant child is indeed the Eternal Word of God. And this divine gift is just not for God's holy people Israel. The Savior has arrived on this earth for the redemption of all peoples. These foreign travelers stand for all of us who are not members of God's chosen people Israel. Nonetheless, God has sent his Savior hild for the redemption of all people. The Epiphany of the Lord "Behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying 'Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.'" How strange to journey so far for perhaps so little. Of course the magi go to the capitol city. Of course they entreat with King Herod. Of course this is where they expect newborn royalty to be. But where is the child? "In Bethlehem of Judea," the scribes say. And so the magi go on to what is yet another hristmas miracle. We don't know where the magi met the hrist hild, but it cannot have been lavish. Perhaps it was the stable. Perhaps it was a small hovel Joseph had found to wait out the census. But it would have been the home of a laborer, worn and threadbare. Here, in this unassuming abode, the magi are still "overjoyed...they prostrated themselves and did him homage." Have you ever gotten to the end of a great work and found the results to be underwhelming? How did you respond? Were you disappointed or elated at God's providence and your upended expectations? The magi journeyed hundreds of miles over treacherous terrain to pay homage to royalty they have seen prophesied in the stars. They encountered an ordinary family displaced from their home. This Sunday, the magi are an example for us. an we see God in the unexpected? Do we encounter Him in the person who doesn't fit our expectations of propriety? Do we revere hrist's presence in the poor? Or do we expect to meet God only in places of honor and esteem? This week, ask God for the grace to honor Him in the unexpected places and unassuming people. He is waiting for you! 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany. In many cultures oftentimes more prominently than hristmas! For the most part the holiday tree is gone and the decorations are stored away for another year. The gifts of the Magi of gold, frankincense, and myrrh are symbolic, as these were given to kings or divinities in antiquity. Gold is a precious element representing kingship, frankincense a perfume, and myrrh a costly balm or ointment. The magi were not necessarily kings as we know them in our time but members of the Persian priestly caste. Matthew foreshadows in these gifts the post-resurrection mission to the Gentiles by showing these Persian kings coming to worship the child Jesus. Ultimately, this is a foreshadowing that the ministry of Jesus will be directed to all the nations and peoples of this earth. It is also significant that the Magi worship the child Jesus. Matthew in his Gospel account does not use the term infant for Jesus. His account tells us that Mary is at her house, not in a manger in Bethlehem. I don t like to spoil that quaint image of hristmas we might have in our minds, but the reality is that they came from the East and I m certain that Joseph and Mary did not remain in a stable for animals with the new-born infant until their arrival at the manger. It is also significant that the Magi worship the child Jesus. The evangelist Matthew also tells us that the Holy Family fled into Egypt to escape Herod slaughtering all the male children in Bethlehem up to two years old. This is a clear indication that the Magi visited their home about two years after His birth in Bethlehem. I admit this reality destroys the sentimental images of His birth in a manger, but common sense tells us that they would not have stayed in a barn for animals until the three kings arrived from the East. In the story following this Passage, Matthew also tells us of the Holy Family s flight into Egypt to escape Herod slaughtering all the male children in Bethlehem up to two years old. Therefore, in today s Gospel reading we already see Jesus mission to the Gentiles and the universal scope of salvation foreshadowed by the visit of the Magi to worship the child Jesus. This is the cause for our celebration and in so many varied ways, all of us are sent forth every week from our places of worship to be the bearers of that good news of our salvation. 4 Families and the Gospel January 6 Mt. 2:1-12 After meeting Jesus, the Magi returned home by another way. What in your family needs to be done another way? Do you need another way to resolve differences, to communicate or show affection? This is a new year. It s time to change what isn t working. Take a tip from some wise men, there s always another way. The "Select Singers" is a distinctively audition only group of singers in grades Much of their music is done acapella. Everyday Stewardship "The Story of the Other Wise Man" by Henry Van Dyke was first published in It tells the fictional story of Artaban, a fourth wise man who began a journey to visit Jesus, the newborn King. Unlike his fellow Magi, he failed to make it there for the birth of Jesus because he kept pausing to help various people in need. In fact, it took him about 33 years of searching before his quest comes to an abrupt end when he is hit in the head with a falling roof shingle. His final breath takes place in Jerusalem near the place where Jesus is being crucified. As he lies dying, he hears the voice of Jesus telling him that the gifts he has given all along the way to "the least of these" he has actually given to Jesus himself. If you have never read this story or seen the made-for-television movie based on the tale, you really should seek it out. It is a story that reminds us of a profound truth: Jesus himself rests in the lives of all those around us in need. In the story, it was the wise man's constant response to a stewardship call that prevented him from getting where he wanted to go. In the end, where he needed to go was more significant than where he thought he should go. If we live lives of generosity and graciousness, we may find ourselves on constant detours from the road on which we are traveling. It is in the detours and the unexpected circumstances of our journey that often times we find our true purpose in life. Write a short prayer and tape it to your calendar. As these special days come up through the year, get out a special day plate for the person being celebrated and say the prayer at your family meal.
