Through his death and resurrection, Christ freed us from sin and gave us access to new life. It is true that Christ will raise us up on the last day, but it is also true that, in a certain way, we have already risen with Christ in the Sacrament of Baptism. Because of Christ, Christian death has a positive meaning. By death the soul is separated from the body, but when the Lord comes in all his glory, he will give incorruptible life to our body, transformed by reunion with our soul. Instruction Ad resurgendum cum Christo, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 2016, Number 2. Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Liturgy Office Through the saving water of Baptism we welcome J R W to our parish family. Donations were made to the Memorial fund John & Chris ne Popovich GOSPEL MEDITATION 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time In memory of Rosemarie Zepka If you have been closely following the Sunday readings, today s Gospel could sound a bit like a broken record. Four weeks ago, the Gospel told of Jesus visiting his home of Nazareth and being poorly received by his family members. Jesus had attracted a large crowd as he preached, and his concerned relatives came to bring him home. Jesus, they thought, was out of his league. Today Jesus takes things further. He returns to Nazareth. Rather than preaching from his house, he enters the synagogue. He speaks eloquently. The listeners acknowledge that wisdom has been given him and recognize the mighty deeds wrought by his hands, but it is too much for them to bear. Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary? The listeners know his whole clan, his male and female relatives. Jesus as carpenter was acceptable. Even Jesus as fringe preacher was interesting enough to draw a crowd. But Jesus as authoritative teacher is too much. They took offense at him. As Christians, we have known the truth of Jesus identity since we were first introduced to him. He is fully human and fully divine. He is the second person of the Trinity. It could be easy to look down on these 1st century listeners for their lack of faith. But where do we expect to learn our own lessons? The more we age, the easier it is to believe we understand the world and how it works. We have experience with people, with the Church, with politics, and with the affairs of daily living. We have developed criteria for first impressions. We categorize. Today we remember that the Christian life requires humility. Jesus listeners have an expectation of how things should be, and their lack of faith causes doubt in others. He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there. Do your assumptions limit your perspective? Who can you learn from that you did not expect?

3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB I knew you would say that! is often the response we might give to another when we might need advice, correction or direction in the journey of life. That is how well the townspeople and even His family and His chosen apostles thought they knew Jesus. After Jesus had been away for some time in His earthly ministry, those from His hometown had put Him in a box, so to speak, and when He returned to them, He was the carpenter, the son of Mary and Joseph, and who was He to now teach them? In response, Jesus refers to Himself as a prophet without honor in His own country, town, and even in His own house. Likewise, many of the early Christians were likely without honor in their own homes. We are reminded of that adage, familiarity breeds contempt. As a result, we are told that those closest to Jesus for most of His life did not see Him for who He was but for whom they determined Him to be. We might not be dismissive of the carpenter who was the son of Mary because we know the end of His story, but we can still be blind to the presence of Jesus in our time and place in history. But there is a temptation in both the religious and social realm to believe we have what we need to be complete and whole. There is little another person, especially one of the margins of society, could teach us about how to act, how to behave, or anything about God. Perhaps we might be more open to finding the new, the unexpected, because we are too comfortable with what we think we know. Jesus redefines the meaning of authority. It is not derived from our ability to manipulate the fears, suspicions, apathy, or ignorance of those around Him but from the spirit of mercy, justice, and compassion that we are also able to call forth from the depths of our hearts as did Jesus. When the prophetic words of Jesus threaten our own safe, insulated world, we too can walk away from Him or reject Him outright, as did the people of Nazareth. God dwells in our midst in the simplest acts of kindness, in the humblest acts of kindness and efforts of compassion for others. May we be open to finding the new, the unexpected, even in the familiar routine of our daily lives. The presence of God is in our midst if we but take the time each day in prayer. As many demands made upon Jesus in His earthly ministry, He still made the time to go off by Himself to a lonely place to pray to His Father each day. May we learn to do the same, for in the end it will more than likely be an opportunity for each of us to be His presence for others who may need healing and a reason to hope, and that we journey with them to our heavenly home. WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: We are considering homeschooling our children. Does this present a problem when it is time for them to receive the sacraments? What must we do? Answer: Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, and like other types of education, has its advantages and its drawbacks. There are many factors to consider, and each family has to decide what the best way to educate its children is. With religious education, many dioceses have a formal policy that outlines procedures and expectations, some of which include more than just academic information. Call the religious education office to find out what they are for your area. HOSPITALIZED Thelma Ponchek PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. BUS TRIP UPDATE: (SOLD OUT) Sight & Sound: JESUS August 31st at 3PM Dinner Hershey Farm Payments due by July 30, 2018 Adults $123 Children $78 SAVE THE DATE!! August 6 10 In general, though, an appointment with your parish priest to discuss your situation is the best first step. An opportunity to discuss what is available, what the expectations are for each sacrament, and how you can best prepare your child helps make your time of preparation more effective. The priest can direct you to good catechetical materials, parent information classes, and other choices and possibilities for your child. All parents need to be part of their child s religious education, taking a lead in instilling the values and beliefs of their faith. Communication and information helps us all to teach and preach the Gospel as Jesus did. MOE RAE

4 Families and the Gospel July 8 Mark 6:1-6 Today s gospel is so familiar, it hurts! The home town folks couldn t accept the presence of God in Jesus. After all, they had watched him grow up. We can easily make the same mistake if we don t see God present in the ordinary routines of our family. The Lord be with you is a statement of fact. Believe it. Live it. Sweeney On The Lighter Side A Rock and a Hard Place A priest, an evangelist, and a minister were in a row boat in the middle of a pond fishing. None of them had caught anything all morning. After a while, the evangelist stood up and said he needed to go to the bathroom. So he climbed out of the boat and walked on the water to shore. He came back ten minutes later the same way. Then the minister decided he needed to go to the bathroom, too. He climbed out of the boat and walked on the water to shore. He, too, came back the same way ten minutes later. The priest looked at both of them and decided that his faith was just as strong as his fishing buddies and that he could walk on water, too. He stood up and excused himself. As he stepped out, he made a big splash down into the water. The evangelist looked at the minister and said, "I suppose we should have told him where the rocks were."
