Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! Once the celebration of Matrimony is completed, the preparation of the altar and gifts follows. The rite suggests that the bride and bridegroom may bring the bread and wine to the altar. Other possibilities would be family or friends. The couple can ask their godparents to bring up the gifts. Once all is ready on the altar, Mass proceeds in the usual manner. 9/11 Tomorrow marks the sixteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on American soil. Many lives were lost, many were injured, and still many continue to mourn that painful September day. Take time for special prayer: participate at Mass, pray the rosary, read scripture, take time before the Blessed Sacrament and silently reflect on God's love. Ask the Blessed Mother, patroness of our country, to intercede that peace prevail among the nations and for an end to terrorism and violence. God bless our country and all the peoples of the world Liturgy Office, Altoona-Johnstown Diocese SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND: Urgent Prayer Request - Special Collec on for Hurricane Harvey Relief. We urge everyone to pray for those affected by the storm. Save the date: We will be taking up a second collec on the Weekend of September If you are unable to a end that mass and would like to donate you are welcome to place your dona on in an envelope labeled HURRICANE HARVEY - checks should be made payable to Ss. Gregory & Barnabas. Those envelopes can be mailed to the office or dropped in the collec on basket over the next three weekends (Sept 2-3, Sept 9-10, Sept We must forward the total collected to the diocese by September 22 so the funds can be sent to Catholic Chari es USA which is already assis ng in the areas affected by the storm. All dioceses throughout the country are par cipa ng in this special collec on. We thank you in this me of urgency. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB Mother Nature has not been very nice as of late. We are being asked by the bishops of the United States to take up a special collection for the victims of the hurricane in Houston, Texas, and as of this writing, another potentially, very dangerous hurricane heading toward costal Florida. North Korea is also not being very nice in relationship with our nation in the threat of using nuclear weaponry. We need to pray to our God in these very frightening and difficult times. It appears to be a survival of the fittest but we also need divine intervention, for as a culture and society we have turned away from God. All of this is a reminder of the fragility of life itself and admit our dependence upon the Divine. We are still waiting for more information from the Diocese as to what is expected and needed that we might be able to alleviate some of the suffering that comes from loss and pain, by our concern and care for all those affected by these dire situations. Mass attendance on the weekends has not been good over the summer months. I realize families have been traveling, enjoying some vacation time and that is to be expected at this time of year. But with the start of another school year, hopefully there will be an increase in the numbers of those attending the weekend liturgies. It is still a law of our Church that we must attend Mass on the weekend unless there is a serious reason that this is not possible. One should not come forward for Holy Communion without first going to confession if it was through their fault or neglect that they did not fulfill this obligation. God s love for us is unconditional but we need to live in the light and joy of that love by taking the time to give thanks, which is called Eucharist. There are students in our religious education program who are not attending Mass on a regular basis every weekend and this is unacceptable. I realize some may be attending Mass at another parish because of a conflict in schedules on certain weekends but there are students/parents who are registered in our parish that I never/seldom see at the Saturday/Sunday liturgies. We need all our members to come together on a regular basis to pray, play, and work together to build a family of faith. If there is a reason why you have stopped coming to Mass on a regular basis, please let me know. I can t fix a problem/situation that I am not aware of but if did something to offend or hurt you, please let me know. 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. This is a fascina ng promise. Jesus enlightens us today about the power of communal faith. He emphasizes that a gathering of like-minded believers, small though it may be, has a powerful effect. As he tells his disciples, If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. Alright then, what are we wai ng for? We should take Jesus up on this amazing offer! Going to Mass is one way to do so. When we gather together every Sunday, we do more than listen to readings and receive the Eucharist. We also pray together. The priest leads us in these prayers, of course, but we are meant to join with him, as the Second Va can Council put it, with fully conscious, and ac ve par cipa on (Sacrosanctum Concilium, #14). We are to make the prayers our own by a en vely joining in with them from our hearts. Mindlessly reci ng Amen or absently whispering the words of the Our Father likely loses the effect Jesus was talking about in today s Gospel. But truly praying together with our parish community certainly fits the bill. We need not be at church to fulfill this kind of prayer, however. It only takes two! Those of us who live with others can exercise communal prayer every day in our own homes, just by joining each other for a few moments of pe on or praise. Those who live alone may need to reach out more deliberately, but it only takes a phone call to gather together with another believer and offer up our prayers. May we have the courage to invite others to join us as we bring our needs to God Catholic Ministries Drive Please note the 2017 Catholic Ministries is taking the place of the Annual Catholic Appeal. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. Thank you. Exploring Our Heritage Families come in all sizes. Some children live with two parents, some with one; or a child may be loved and cared for by people who are not their parents. Grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins are part of everybody s family. Each family has a heritage, its own special people, background, events, places, and stories. Find out about your family s heritage by asking older friends and members of your family. Do you know the names of your grandparents and great-grandparents? Do you know what kind of work each of them did or does? Try to find out from your family. Do you know where each person was born? Mark on a map or make a list of the places your parents and grandparents have lived that your family knows about. Are all the places on a map of the United States or do you need a world map? 4 Families & the Gospel September 10 Mt. 18:15-20 The key word in today s gospel is listen. We cannot change another person; not alone, not with others and not with a whole Church. All we can do is state our position and if he listens to you then he/she can take the steps necessary to change themselves. Change comes from within.
