Please call the rectory office to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry are to make arrangements at least nine months prior to their wedding date. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! If you are moving into, within, or out of the Parish, please call the Rectory Office and let us know. Moreover, the body which lies in death naturally recalls the personal story of faith, the loving family bonds, the friendships, and the words and acts of kindness of the deceased person. Indeed, the human body is inextricably associated with the human person, which acts and is experienced by others through the body. Liturgical Reflection Monday, September 3, is a Day of Prayer in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. On Labor Day the Local Church will observe the intention for Human Rights and Equality. Please pray the following for all who seek just and rewarding work. God of compassion and love, guardian of the oppressed and lover of the poor, watch over and protect our brothers and sisters who seek work that meets the needs of their families. Provide labor that offers just wages and dignity of life so that all may live comfortably and in peace. On this Labor Day we ask your blessings through Christ our Lord. Amen. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB Our annual Church Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, September 16th in Daisytown after the 11A.M. Mass. Sign-up sheets are in the vestibules of both worship sites this weekend. This also means that the deadline for signing those lists is fast approaching, September 10th. We need to place our food order the week of the September 10th. Smoke em Up BBQ will bring pulled pork, half chicken legs/thighs, chicken brats, buns and sauce. We are asking that those families/ individuals attending bring a covered dish, dessert or salad. There is no program, speeches, or bands, just an opportunity to gather for a family parish picnic of sorts before the Fall. Feel free to use the parish grounds for Volley Ball or any other sporting event, but you must provide the necessary equipment needed for those games. Hope to see you there. With all the bad press the Church has received in the last few weeks, I would also ask you to at least consider that this sin of sexual abuse may have been brought to the sacrament of Penance (confession) and we may not break that sacred seal of confession. Of course, the priest who administers the sacrament must do all he is able to convince the penitent that what was confessed was not only sinful but against the law. If truly sorrow, they must also face the legal consequences of their crime. This whole issue is not as black and white as it appears. God is the ultimate judge of our earthly actions. We must forgive the sin, but it is up to the penitent to uphold and abide by the laws enacted by government officials or the moral laws of the Church that have been broken. Our religious education program will begin soon, and this is just a reminder to parents that those classes on Sunday morning do not replace the obligation to attend Mass on the weekend, either Saturday evening or Sunday morning. It would also be good to sit down with your children at home and ask them to share with you what they learned or did at class that day. As the Church proclaims, parents are the first teachers of their children in the way of faith. They are to do this both in word and action as they are asked to be the best of teachers. They learn more from you by your daily actions and words about their religion and how important the faith is in their own lives than they do by the time they spend in religion classes once a week. Please help us in the religious education of your children by your own good example. Mission Co-Op this weekend: Visi ng Missionary Fr. Frederic Kpoumie, a Clare an Missionary from Cameroon who is presently assigned to parish ministry an forma on of minor seminarians in Yaounde, Cameroon (Africa) will be in our parish this weekend (Sept 1-2) to par cipate in the Annual Missionary Coopera ve Appeal. He will preach at all the masses this weekend and will make an appeal on behalf of this religious community the Clare an Missionaries serving the US and abroad in places like Cameroon, India, Nigeria, and Tanzania. There will be a special mission collec on next weekend, September 8 * 9 to help the Clare an Missionaries. We urge you to be very generous in your mission offering since these Missionaries need our help. Please keep Father Frederic and all the Clare an Missionaries and seminarians in your prayers. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. 4 Families and the Gospel September 2 Mk 7:1-8,14-15,21-23 In today s gospel Jesus warns what comes from within can defile a person. Families need to worry about outside influences but also about inside influences. The values our children carry for a life time are learned at home. Habits of the Hearth are the most powerful influences on a child. That s the good news! That can also be the bad news! IN THE COMMUNITY: Fish Fry is back! St. Francis of Assisi will be sponsoring a Fish Fry on Friday, September 14 from 11:00Am until 6:00PM at the Activity Center, corner of D Street and Barron Avenue. Gobs will be available as well as bake sale. We offer Fried and Baked Fish as well as Shrimp. Dinners include 2 sides and a roll. A Special which includes Fish Sandwich and French Fries for $7.50 is available all day. A complete menu can be viewed on our website: Family Marian Celebration Mass & Rosary: will be hold Sunday, September 30 at 3PM at St. Benedict s Church, 2310 Bedford St. Johnstown PA. When I watch the news, I see so many distortions of justice. One person s notion of fairness is sometimes far from another s understanding of justice. Perhaps the issue is that human justice often becomes corrupted by selfishness and greed. Justice for one s self always seems more important than justice for another. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to use what we have been given not only to fight for human justice alone, but also to offer a more benevolent justice that can only come from God. We are called to offer all we have to God for His greater intentions. Our gifts cannot only level the playing field for some but can serve as instruments of grace for those who, in the eyes of the world, do not even deserve it. In God s framework of justice, second chances and overflowing generosity are commonplace. Everyone created in the image of God deserves love regardless of their state in life or the actions they have taken against another. The world will never understand this type of justice. Humans have a hard enough time figuring out the simple concepts of equity or fair play. For those who do not believe in Jesus, his justice seems even more difficult to comprehend. Family Ritual As the children get se led into a new school year, pause for a moment to pray for their success academically, athle cally and socially. Lord, draw all children close to you, for you are the source of all knowledge and talent. Surround them with a spirit of learning. Help them explore all that is available in this vast world that God has created for all of us to learn from. Bless their teachers with pa ence, tenderness and inspira on.
