Hritz by Jesse & Becky Santoyo For the People Marie Respet Anniversary by Daughter, Son & Families Liturgical Reflection Following the most ancient Christian tradition, the Church insistently recommends that the bodies of the deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sacred places. In memory of the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord, the mystery that illumines the Christian meaning of death, burial is above all the most fitting way to express faith and hope in the resurrection of the body. By burying the bodies of the faithful, the Church affirms her faith in the resurrection of the body, and intends to show the great dignity of our humanity which was assumed by Jesus our Lord. Instruction Ad resurgendum cum Christo, Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith, 2016, Number 3. Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Liturgy Office July 15, th Sunday in Ordinary Time He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two. This Sunday we read the first sending of the Apostles to preach, teach, and heal. For many of us, it can be easy to think we just don t have enough to be disciples and evangelists ourselves. We don t have enough education and training. We don t have enough experience talking to people about Jesus. We don t pray enough. We don t have enough faith. If you look at the Apostles in today s Gospel reading, they didn t have much either. No food, no sack, no money in their belts. They didn t plan out their itinerary or book their lodging in advance. From what we know of the Apostles, they were not the religiously trained and educated ones. They were fisherman, tax collectors, and political activists. But what does being a fisherman require? Someone like Peter needed a strong work ethic to rise at strange hours. He needed patient calm to wait for the catch. Once ashore, he needed a savvy mind to fetch a good price for his labors. As Peter became a fisher of men, he would need diligence to persevere through the hard journeys, long days, and persecution that awaited him. He would need patient calm with those who disagreed with him. As the leader of the Apostles, he would need a savvy mind to navigate challenges facing the early Church. From one perspective, Peter has nothing to offer the mission of Jesus. Thinking more creatively, one can see that joined with faith and love perhaps Peter had everything he needed. Jesus sends you as well. As you take stock of your own talents, consider how they might be offered as a gift to others. Maybe you already have more than Addi onal Father s Day Remembrance D F Charles Deitke, Sr, Charles Deitke Jr, John Dernar, Sr. & John Dernar Jr, Mike Dernar B : Tom & Peg Deitke
3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB We all like happy endings to stories and difficult situations in life but most of the biblical prophets were abject failures in their mission of converting their people to live according to God s plan for His creation and His children. Prophets were often slain. Amos never returned to his flocks and trees in Judah. Instead, he was tortured at the shrine where he prophesied. The king didn t change his ways of acting and thinking as the nation would soon fall at the hands of the Assyrians. Peace is more than the absence of war. It is enacted by the presence of justice, by the active decision to forgive, by the deliberate choice for friendship rather than retribution. Our generation is not the fullness of times either. Random shootings, natural disasters, and injustice make this an awkward time to claim every spiritual blessing in the heavens as Paul proclaims in his letter to the Ephesian community in our second scripture reading today. Finally, in our Gospel account Jesus states, Whatever place does not welcome you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet. Every week the word of God is proclaimed like so many precious jewels, but it is often received like pearls before swine. Despite the prophet s warning, we are not going to share our wealth or ease the injustice of others. The word of the Lord has to become flesh in each of our lives as well. How important is it for us to have a friend, a life partner, a spouse? They can be there to urge us on when the going is tough, to celebrate our victories and accomplishments with us. Even Jesus recognized how important it is to have a partner. He sends out the Twelve two-by-two. They travel with one another for mutual support, which will likely form a bond of friendship, if it were not already there. Being called to be in a relationship with Jesus is to be also in a relationship with other disciples. The Christian life can never be a Jesus and me relationship. Even the Twelve, chosen by name to be with Jesus in a more intimate relationship with Him and with one another, are not sent alone. They travel together two-by-two. Like the journey of the Twelve through the region of Galilee, our lives are journeys to the dwelling place of God. We can bring the hope and healing of heaven to others or we can be a source of the anger and despair that is sheer hell for them but we have also been given the power to expel those demons that destroy community and happiness. We are the chosen of the Lord in our time and place but we need partners as well on that journey and hopefully that is why we are here this day, not because we have to be here. Thank you! 100% of your gift supports 14 ministries like Adult Enrichment! Learning about our faith does not end with confirmation, graduation or going to Mass. Spiritual growth and personal growth are life-long processes. So take a leap of faith and learn more about everything Catholic! A story of Faith, Hope & Charity. For many years, Elizabeth was hungry. Not for food, but for something more meaningful. She had a hunger and curiosity for a deeper understanding of her Catholic faith way more than her Catholic education and Sunday Mass could provide. I would sit in the pew every Sunday and I would wonder why, and actually prayed that I would understand the Bible better. I knew other people had that understanding but I didn t. That s when I went to my first class on the New Testament. At 55, Elizabeth admitted she went hesitantly but added that the class was comfortable and filled with the young and the old. She enjoyed it so much she continued to take classes on the Old Testament and attended one called Heart of Faith that focused on the Creed, the Sacraments, and Christian Life and Prayer. Now, years later, she says she s hungry again and plans on re-doing the New Testament class, citing that every class and instructor is different. You re never too old to learn, she adds. When the Holy Spirit keeps knocking on your heart to learn, you ve got to open it. Your support today of Adult Enrichment helps the Diocese offer opportunities for everyone to live their faith more fully in the family, workplace and society. Seven programs will be offered in the fall and can be taken at one s choosing: Heart of Faith; Old Testament; New Testament; Christian Prayer and Spirituality; Living Your Strengths Workshop; and Sacraments. The outcomes are spiritual formation, a greater love of your faith, and the development of your communication and leadership skills. For class schedules, go to: dioceseaj.org/adult-enrichment HOSPITALIZED Miriam Karl PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. A visit to the Museum of the Bible makes the Holy Land come alive, and at the Museum for National Geographic, we will experience an exhibition entitled the Tomb of Christ, which takes us on a 3-D photographic journey into the very heart of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. We will be departing at 7:00 from our parking lot, and returning by 11. The cost is $90 per person, which includes travel in a luxury coach, admission to both museums, and dinner on the way home. For more information, or to make reservations, please call the St. John s at All are most welcome! Spiritual Resolutions We work on our physical fitness but what about our spiritual fitness? JULY: Climb over an agreement and make peace with someone with whom you ve been on the outs. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? Those who have clean hands and pure hearts who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully. (Psalm 24:3-4) Be a mediator for others who are trying to be reconciled. Tell the truth. Avoid gossiping or appearing better than you are. Give the other person the benefit of the doubt. Speaking the truth in love can be as hard as mountain climbing. Yet, when hurts are reconciled, the vision can be as exhilarating as reaching the summit! Summertime Fun Overkill Summertime is great because it offers us the opportunity to break the routine and get away for rest and relaxation. But some people work so hard at having fun during summer weekends that they have to drag themselves back to work on Monday morning! These mad dashes to weekend fun spots only make us old and tired before our time. God s plan for a balanced life is for people to take time from their busy working lives to seek the peace and serenity of his presence in genuine worship. Do take time for leisure and relaxation this summer. But remember that regular worship is also a part of God s recreational plan for his people. Clip Art Features for Church Newsle ers4, George W.
